Doc Rivers gets a new deal.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=A ... &type=lgns
After an emotional year in which Rivers lost his father, Grady, in November, there had been some concern that he might consider leaving coaching for a return to television. With approximately $5.5 million a season in the new deal – and postseason incentive clauses that could drive his annual total to $7 million – to go with a chance to win more titles, Rivers never seriously considered walking away.

Good for Doc. He deserves it. He went through and took a lot of crap from everyone, including myself and proved us all wrong.

Doc is the perfect coach for this team. What I really like about him is that he's excellent with the vets as well as young players. Congrats, Doc!

Yeah, good for Doc. I'm happy for him too.
I wonder if Thibodeau is on board for this year too.

Good for him. Although he needs to stop making us fans cringe with subs, I'm happy for him. The 07/08 season was such a HUGE success for everyone involved.
Hard to think he was almost fired a few seasons ago.

I assume he is, I never heard anything about him leaving for any other coaching position.
Good for doc, he deserves it.

Ya I agree to an extent but I think Doc proved he could coach halfway through the Cleveland series, saying Doc won because of KG and Allen is like saying Red only won because of Russell.

hmm, Doc's a nice guy and all, but I'm not really sure he's capable of winning a championship.

There was an anouncement around the time that they signed House and Allen that all the assitants would be back.

A year ago if Doc got extended half the board would have been up in arms. What a difference a little championshipedness can make.

Ewhhh, well that just goes to show the current system and it's leaders are cemented in. Thibs will should be gone after this season unless we go deep again.

Re: Doc Rivers gets a new deal.
Doc took a lot of crap from me during the season, and I think a lot of it was deserved... yes he came through in the end, but I think in many ways we won despite him, not because of him.
I'm still not a fan. At this point it's tough to question management's decisions considering we won the NBA championship. But this strikes me as us being complacent, i.e. "Doc was good enough to win this past year, he'll be good enough to win next year!" This often happens to championship teams, they stop trying to improve and rather focus on keeping what they had.
I suppose there might not be another option here, given the uproar that would no doubt ensue if we replaced Doc after a championship season. Doesn't mean I need to like it.

I don't know if this is necessarily true. Coaching in pro sports in many ways follows trends. Much like the young hot shot modern thinking GM is in vogue so is the former player as head coach. The current model seems to be a former player surrounded by veteran assistants is the best balance. Unfortunately for Thibodeau it seems he may have been a couple years late on the promoted assistant trend. I think what teams saw was the inability of the Van Gundy, Frank, and O'Brien's to get beyond that .500 mark as well as a couple of washouts have lead ownership and front offices to this trend. But just look at all of the recent hires are all universally former players.
