Anytime you use a valuable asset, and even a second round pick has reasonable value in the NBA, there is an element of risk attached to using it.

The risk profile is extended when you pick an asset that has a history of performance issues (in this case athletes who have suffered serious injuries previously)

Therefore, it is a gamble, but the risk v reward scale is something Ainge is obviously happy to accept.

Basically, every pick is a gamble. In the middle of the second round the gamble is - does guy A have any chance of improving enough to be a player, or can guy B stay out of trouble, or can guy C stay healthy. To me, the teams that passed on Walker in the second round just plain asss blew it.

To a certain extent every pick has a level of volatility, however the difference between walker is that he has a higher ceiling and lower floor then most, a player like Ryan Gomes is less of a gamble becuase he has certain skills that are defiantly going to translate to the pro game coming out and don't have a major injury risk, there my be a question about a players like that ability to fit at either 3 or 4, but he had skills made sure he would be at least able to be a scrub. Walker on the other hand has the athleticism of a star, the skills of a starter and the knees of someone who very well might not be playing in year he is more of a gamble then someone like gomes because there is a lower floor and yet a higher possible return.

You can take a 2nd round pick who can stroke the 3 or is a great rebounder and that player is not a gamble becase its very likley they will be able to exhibit that skill

I think they were worried about spending the money especially after signing Antoin and Gil. They still have to sign Butler right? OR did they already sign butler.

I love Bill Walker and while he may have the talent to eventually be a lottery pick he wasn't a lottery pick in this draft even if healthy. I really like him as a player and he has some skills you can't teach but he is pretty raw basketball wise. I wanted to draft him and I am glad we have him but I don't think this guy is ready for a NBA offense or defensive rotations but year from now the C's may really have something.

Well that is interesting. So it just as much mental as physical. He isn't G$ is he, All flash and no substance? He will be able to make the transition to the pro game on both sides of the ball right?

He might be raw but he probably would get lost in the numbers crunch anyway. There is some outside shot that he just impresses beyond what people here imagine and proves he is less raw and more ready.. But it's a tall order with the competition he has..
