TV Shows & Movies 2.0

Post#1 » by closg00 » Thu Sep 11, 2008 4:32 pm

I recently saw The Counterfeiters, a film that won the Oscar for best foreign film last year, it was a
4-star film for-sure.

I am most looking forward to the return of Heroes, & Dexter. I taped the new Fox show Fringe, but haven't watched it yet. Other than that, it will be hoops, and those two shows until Lost returns.

My creme de la creme: Dexter, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, 30 Rock

Other shows I can't wait to come back: Chuck, How I Met Your Mother, Psych (technically this is already airing right now, but after tomorrow, it takes a break until mid-season)

Shows I'll watch once they're back, but I'm not dying for new episodes: Californication, My Name is Earl, King of the Hill, American Dad, South Park

Shows on now that I'm already watching: Entourage, True Blood, Mythbusters

Yea, I watch a lot of TV. I almost never watch movies though, so no contributions in here on that front from me.

Tripple-Oops! I did check out the premier of HBO's True Blood, and was a bit disappointed. I have high-hopes, so I will give it a few more episodes to hook me. I also watched all of A&E's Physchic Kids which I enjoyed enough to watch the next time they offer it....not sure when that will be. Battlestar Galactica is a fave that I will watch in it;s final season.

Good TV shows are "Dexter," "Battlestar Galactica," and "Big Love."

^ Definitely agree on Galactica, although their decision to split the last season into two made it lose some steam for me. Those last few episodes had better be epic! I'm also excited for the return of House.

I'll also add that I'm a huge fan of most of USA's original shows. Psych is awesome (although I'd probably enjoy it more if I was more familiar with 80's pop culture) and the Det. Goren character on Law and Order is one of my favorites on any show. Burn Notice grew on me (and not just because of Bruce Campbell) but I still think they made a horrible choice for the main character's love interest. I'm not sure there's a more unattractive leading lady on television right now. Not to mention that her attempt at an Irish accent is almost as bad as Harrison Ford trying to sound Russin in K-19.

The last thing I'll mention is that Sci-Fi scored HUGE by having Star Trek TNG marathons every Monday. I don't think I'll ever get tired of watching that show. How could I? After all, resistance IS futile.

sons of anarchy has been a decent show two episodes in. Galactica season three was just amazing, I felt like four took a step back and then splitting the season was entirely lame, can't wait till 09 though.

I was iffy on True Blood. I like the general premise (which is saying something, as I tend to not watch sci-fi shows much), and I liked the two main characters (the waitress and the vampire), but I didn't really like anything else: the secondary characters, the special effects, the storytelling, etc. There's enough promise there that like you, I'm willing to give it another few watchings before I decide whether it's worth keeping up with or ditching.

House and LOST = only two shows (other than sports) miller watches with any regularity.

With LOST not on for another few months, I'm in trouble.

I'll never try "Lost" again. I gave up on it in the middle of season two, when I thought it was absolutely ridiculous and was going to great lengths to NOT advance the plot at all. [And not for story-telling reasons. I think the writers actually had no idea where the story should go so they just delayed with endless, pointless flashbacks.] I've been told that "Lost" has improved since season two, but, as The Who would say, I won't get fooled again.

What I like so much about "Dexter" is that lots of things happen and though flashbacks are necessary for the development of the central character, they are brief, pertinent, and NEVER permitted to take over the show [or even one particular episode of the show]. "Dexter" is smart, the subject matter is like nothing else on television or the cinema, and it is witty without being trashy. I've never seen such a grisly premise handled with such dexterity and respect for the intellect of the audience.

I pretty much just watch sports if they are on. If not, I watch Two and Half Men and Grey's Anatomy. Two and a Half Men is hilarious...don't know how they get away with half the stuff they do. I also liked Johns Hopkins (documentary on the hospital), when it was on.

I'd rather watch a movie than a TV show. Saw "21" the other night on PPV and it was pretty good. Best movie of the summer was Black Knight IMO. Looking forward to seeing Tropic Thunder this weekend.

Season two was by far the worst season of Lost. Season 3 was a bounce-back (tied with season 1 in terms of delivery, though it's hard to top season 1 simply because it was so breakthrough).

Season 4 (this past season) was as exciting as any of the past years, but got really sci-fi (yeah, I know the show was pretty sci-fi before season 4).

I'm still addicted since I enjoy the characters, acting and twists. Is it realistic? No. But it keeps me interested.

If you liked season one, I'd at least give season 3 a shot (though it seems like you're pretty much done with it, lol). If you don't mind ridiculous turns and lots of sci-fi, then you could even continue to season 4.

black knight with martin lawrence? i thought i was the only one who liked it.

TV: 30 Rock, Entourage, South Park (especially episodes with Stan's Dad), The Office and Ugly Betty.

Though i must say the quality of The Office has declined significantly for whatever reason: Michael going from incompetent to functionally (Please Use More Appropriate Word), Pam and Jim getting together, Dwight going from quirky to clinically insane, Andy Bernard going from annoying to unbearable... basically the Characters have become characatures of themselves rather than parodies of relateable office personalities.

TV on DVD: Lost, Heroes basically because the plot lines advance slower than an Oscar Wilde novel.

Never understood the brooha over Lost...thought it was pure unadulterated garbage. Watching Sons of Anarchy...looks great.

Couldn't agree more on Lost..tried to watch it a few times and it was pretty ugly.

Now Family Guy - that's another story

Well, it's not one of those shows you can just watch once in a while. If you don't start from the beginning and watch in sequence, there's a really good chance you'll be lost (no pun intended).

I am a huge fan of the early Family Guy (the initial seasons, and their first comeback). When they came back a 2nd time (in 2006, IIRC), they lost a step. I know their whole show is based on constant "remember that time" jokes and "like that time" jokes instead of a balance of those jokes and story-line, and I'm fine with that. But there's having an imbalance, and then there's just completely losing focus of any semblance of a story.

That's the biggest difference between their prime years (IMO) and the current Family Guy.

And ironically enough, the one episode they followed a dynamic story ("Blue Harvest" -- the "Star Wars" parody hour-long episode) is the one episode from their new line that I really enjoyed.

Just my 0.02 cents, though. If a new episode is on, I'll watch it, but I won't make it anywhere near a priority like it used to be.

Yeah, family guy was exellent the first time around. Now it's getting kind of obvious that they've run out of ideas.

I'm with the others on Family Guy. The first three seasons were and still are incredible. Then it came back, and was merely pretty good. And as each new season has passed, it has gotten worse and worse, to the point where I now can't deem it any better than "kind of watchable". As in, I'm fine with watching it if I happen to be on FOX and it's on, but couldn't care less if I miss it.

It's just a very different show nowadays. If you watch a season one episode and a season six episode back-to-back, the differences are striking. The older show had fewer flashbacks, and a lot of the ones they did have were often at least somewhat related to the story rather than the manatee jokes they use now. That's another difference: many older episodes actually had coherent, beginning-to-end stories. Still plenty of weirdness and wackiness, but not overwhelming. And the biggest difference of all is probably Stewie, who transformed to completely new characters over the years. He started out as an evil genius, hell-bent on taking over the world. He spent his time trying to kill Lois and doing battle against Brian. Now, he's a closet homosexual who is attracted to Brian and rarely gives Lois a second glance. I'm sure some people love the new Stewie, but me, I think the original was ten times more funny.

I do see how some people could still love the show. It's simple and crass, which always has an audience. Plus, it throws so much **** at the wall, that some of it is bound to stick. If you can merely look past the bad and enjoy the good, the show is probably still really great. I'm the reverse though - I find the bad so bad that it usually ruins the good.

I love Family Guy. Every show loses a step after a while...liek the Simpsons Seasons 4-10 are like the gold standard, and now I can't stand it. I also think South Park was awesome from season 4-10, and now it's not as funny.

Family Guy is still very, very funny IMO, but I hear what yall are saying.

Watched some show called Sons of Anarchy on On Demand last night. A little over the top but pretty good.

Dexter's first season was money. It has become campy to me and the Deb Morgan character kills me.

B.G. is alright but way overated. Edward James Olmos carries it.

Entourage hasn't been as sharp as it was its first season but it's still keeps my attention.

True Blood is interesting but HBO has been slumping lately. GK was nowhere near as good as I thought it would be. Flight of the Conchordes and Curb are funny but not like I care if I miss them.
