I think there are transactions that, for the wellbeing of the teams future and to make them better for a longer period of time, that you have to do. Now I'm not saying this is a transaction that the Magic should (or would) pursue, I'm just saying that you shouldn't close your eyes and ears to everything; you should be open to all possibilities. Again, let me remind you that this isn't out of any hate of Lewis, I like him as a player: do I think he makes too much? Yes, I think he's a player deserving of money in the 14-15 million range. Do I think he's a bum, though, that does nothing for the team? No, I luckily do not fall into the category. Do I like Hedo better as a player? Yes, but I am willing to trade Hedo if it would make the Magic better. The only untradeable player on the team for me is Howard, with the core being Nelson, Lee, and Howard.
But using this transaction, for instance, here is how it would help the Magic's future: by trading Rashard for Ben Wallace and a first round pick, that opens up cap room which can be used for a few things, plus gives us an extra firstrounder as an asset. A) The Magic could resign Hedo for a medium length deal, and then allow both Battie's and Wallace's contracts to expire and use that cap money to sign a few mid-tier FA's; or B) With the impending free agent class in the next 2-3 years, the Magic could trade Ben Wallace's expiring contract either at the deadline of this season or next for cheap, good players from teams who are trying to open up capspace for that offseason, using draft picks as well in order to get the best possible players in those trades--then they'd use that capspace to resign Hedo; or C) Allow Battie's and Ben Wallace's contracts to expire, and use that caproom to become players in that big free agent class, presumably to go after either Amare Stoudemire or Chris Bosh. If that doesn't work, although I think it would since the market is going to be so flooded that players aren't going to get the money they think they will, then they'd just sign a few mid-tier FA's.
You can't tell me that a team of:
PG- Nelson
SG- Lee
SF- Turkoglu
PF- Stoudemire/Bosh
C- Howard
Isn't better than the team that the Magic fields right now. That's a longshot, yes, I know, but it is a possibility. Over all, though, I still don't know if I'd take Wallace and a first for Lewis, because that would force Battie to be the starting PF and I don't know how I feel about that. If Lewis was leaving for a servicable big then I'd be more willing to okay the deal.
