Jelani McCoy anyone?

Post#1 » by TonyMontana » Tue Sep 16, 2008 4:53 pm

The Lakers could be looking for another big man as they have had free agent center Jelani McCoy in town to work out at their practice facility, according to HoopsHype.

"We are waiting on some other clubs that have shown interest in Jelani," agent Giovanni Funiciello said. "We shall see our next move. He has lucrative offers overseas, but we have looked more towards the NBA... Not to say if something very interesting comes our way we wouldn’t entertain it."

McCoy was on the roster of the Nuggets last season.

Seeing how DJ isnt sure where he wants to sign and we lost Ronny T, Jelani would be a nice addition, but how much money and how many minutes can he contribute to this teams success?
We know he is in his 30s and he's really not a scorer but he can board and he hustles.

I think Rob is done, I mean he has nothing else to prove to anyone.
He has all his rings, with different teams, he has been paid very well through out his career.
His shot isnt as effective as it was before, he is getting old, and this current team is too quick for his old ass. He needs to retire while he is on top.

the way i see it were signing guys like crawford an yue guys that phil won't play this year. so since were wasting roster spots why not sign a vet that knows about winning. i've been disappointed this off-season, i thought we should have got some tougher vets on this team

Not after he started passing up wide open jumpers in the playoffs. He was a waste of space for San Antonio last season.

There is a reason why McCoy is not on an NBA roster.

While I agree with you, Phil, there was also a reason why Mbenga wasn't on an NBA roster and yet we signed him.

Having said that, I don't want to see McCoy on our team. He's played in 16 NBA games in the past half a decade and was released by one of the worst Spanish ACB League teams (Menorca, yeah, you probably have no idea who they are :D)).

Mbenga was on a Roster before we picked him up. The Warriors cut him to clear up a roster spot and by all accounts the Warriors liked the guy.

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_q ... _n21190443

Mbenga is a 12-th man on the bench for sure but he offers more to team than McCoy does. Defense

McCoy is/has been around for a long time and has been on what 6 teams? Cut by all?
I am UCLA fan and had some hopes for McCoy in the NBA.. but time has shown that he doesnt offer much to the NBA. He should play overseas and cash in.

Ahh, my bad then. I was sure Mbenga was also a journeyman in the NBA and was picked up by a team in dire need for a bigman (us). I completely agree with you regarding McCoy, although the last sentence apparently can't be applied for his situation (he's played for a number of overseas teams and has never been able to stick around).

i'd rather take a chance on CJ Giles rather than Mbenga or McCoy

Bynum/Mihm/Miles
Gasol/Odom/Powell
Radman/Ariza/Yue/Walton
Kobe/Sasha
Fisher/Farmar

thats 14 players on the roster, leaving 1 spot open. I kinda want Brandon Heath as our 3rd pg. If fill can bring out his potential, I think he would bring something to the table that neither Farmar or Fisher could provide. He was also on the same highschool squad with Ariza.

Here are Heath's college highlights
