After signing a major contract in the offseason, Gilbert still not 100%... Thoughts?

Man... the amazing thing about Arenas is that he got his new deal without the usage of an agent. I mean, the Wizards spent $110+ MIL on a guy who has missed significant playing in each of the last 2 seasons with knee problems and now he figures to miss at least the first two months of this season. Not only that, but who's to say that when the Wizards get him back that he'll be the same guy he was before OR that he will ever make it through an entire season.

If I were a Wizards fan, my stomach would be upset. I think that franchise would have been MUCH better off letting both Arenas and Jamison walk and use that money or other players who may make that team something more than a 5th seed in the East.

I think I would have preferred the Wizards to use all of the cap space that they could have had and went after young, restricted free agents who could have been bought at the right place than the same "old", same "injured" squad that they bought.... errr... brought back.

He's out for a month. It's not a huge deal. He came back too early last season. Now needs a scope to clean out debris from past surgery, which he never allowed to fully heal because he's a warrior and wanted to play in the playoffs. They were fine last season without him, they'll be fine for the first month without him this season.

I couldn't agree more. Regardless of this injury, I thought the Wizards were insane for giving that money to Arenas. He is the most overrated player in the NBA. He can score, but that is it. He will never be the best player on a champioship contender. That contract will haunt the Wiz for many years.

Wait... no huge deal? They say it's a month right now but who's to say that this is the end of this? Arenas has repeatedly set comeback dates that have had to be put off time and time again. The thing that magnifies this is that he JUST signed a 6 year/$111MIL deal. I like Arenas and like watching him play so I hope he comes back in December and has a healthy career from here on out but it's a tad silly to just brush this off given how the past 18 months of his basketball career have gone and his new contract.

He had a severe injury and he was supposed to miss the entire season. The timetables he set were his alone and not those of the doctors, who all opposed his coming back. He chose to come back early anyway, and now needs a scope to clean out tissue that came lose as a result of his not allowing the injury to fully heal. My comment is merely reflective of the news reports and from the sound of those reports, it does not sound like a significant set back that should impact his career much. There is no additional damage that they reported on nor any mention of weakened joins or possibility for a chronic condition.

Hmmm... a day later and now it seems as though Arenas is going to be out until January and NOT December. This is off of espn.com.

But a team source told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher that Arenas' timetable was "optimistic" and said a January return is far more likely.

I would be worried if he was a Sixer. Recurring knee injuries are never a good thing as we learned with Matt Geiger. They probably made a bad decision letting him return last season as he looked gimpy out there. They should have just shut him down for the year and not risked it, especially if they intended to sign him long term for huge money.

I'm gonna have to disagree here. He had all offseason to get this surgery. Reports say he will miss the first two months of the season.

Signing Arenas is stupid anyway, he's clearly not a guy who can lead a team to anything resembling a Championship. He's going to be one of those guys that as an older veteran, starts to take a somewhat smaller role like Michael Finley, and then suddenly his teams may have major success.

The Wizards simply did too well without him, this should have made it obvious that he wasn't deserving of this kind of contract, especially with his injury problems. I'd be horrified if the Sixers signed someone like him for that kind of money.
