Marbury Expected To Be Waived
Sep 18, 2008 4:03 PM EST

Howard Beck of the New York Times reports that the Knicks are expected to part ways with Stephon Marbury.

"Most of the Knicks' top rotation players from last season have been scrimmaging at the team's training center," writes Beck. "The group has included Jamal Crawford, Eddy Curry, David Lee, Nate Robinson, Jared Jeffries, Wilson Chandler and Zach Randolph, as well as the free-agent pickup Chris Duhon. The most notable absence has been Stephon Marbury, who is expected to be waived before the season."

You know how much I love this guy. Let's take the gamble. He's better than our PG crop right now.

We should sign him for the vet's min. He's still a former all-star, and hes not that old. if it didn't work out, who cares, we can just dump him. He's only for the vet's min anyways.

I just don't want him passing whatever he's been smoking to Bynum or Farmar.

Yes. Just look at his track record. He's been a total disaster everywhere he's been. I'll take an under-talented but hard-working pro like Derek Fisher over gifted but selfish malcontent like Stephon Marbury every day of the week.

Could be a low risk, high reward move. Marbury is a big time talent at PG. Huge scoring threat, also improved his 3-pt shooting to 38% last year.

Gets a bum rap, imo. Perceived as a selfish player, yet has career averages of 8 assists per game. He looks like he has a huge chip on his shoulder on the court, yet sponsors many charities and contributes to the community.

What he isn't is a franchise player. You can't build a team around him, because he doesn't have that personality, he's not a pass first point guard. But he's an bona fide all-star at PG.

He did an admirable job changing his game in NY, under notoriously inflexible Larry Brown and the insane in the membrane Isiah Thomas.

One thing is for sure, he seems and sounds a lot more wise now. He regretted whatever happened in Minnesota, and he apparently trained hard to play for the Knicks this season.

He's a competitor, he's a veteran, he's clutch, and he's got heart. He's made some mistakes in the past, but I wouldn't hold it against him.

He's a HUGE Kobe fan though, so I wouldn't expect there to be any of the reported problems with ego. And if that's not a problem, there is no problem. Sign him, and Phil Jackson has handled players much worse than Marbury, with far less talent.

Actually if the Lakers do show any kind of inclination, he'd accept the offer with both hands just out of his respect for Kobe Bryant. Doesn't he also have an NY friendship with LO? Add that to the opportunity of playing on a Phil Jackson team with a legit contending roster, its a great option for him at this point in his career.

I'd give him a shot. If he doesn't pan out, we just cut him. If he does pan out however.. Wow what a team we'd have.

I think Marbury is in a stage of his career where he could possibly fit in well on a team, and I do know he looks up to Kobe so maybe we could get him on the right track again.

Yes Marbury is crazy. But damn you guys are underrating him. In a team full of stars, Lakers, he can thrive. The reason no one likes him is because he played for the Knicks

Agreed ^

I think Mitch should definitely consider throwing the minimum at him if he is waived.
