Andrew Bogut is scheduled to return to Milwaukee from Australia this weekend, and the 7-foot center is expected to be ready for the opening of the Milwaukee Bucks’ training camp Sept. 30.

But a magnetic resonance imaging exam showed no serious damage, and Bogut has been rehabilitating the injury in his hometown of Melbourne for nearly a month. “Reports are that he’s healthy and should start training camp 100%,” Bucks general manager John Hammond said Wednesday. “That’s what we are hoping and anticipating.”

Bogut signed a five-year, guaranteed $60 million deal during the off-season, with the possibility to earn more in incentives. The 23 year old, the top overall pick in the 2005 National Basketball Association draft, will be entering his fourth season with the Bucks.

Miami Heat rookie Michael Beasley was fined $50,000 by the NBA on Thursday after acknowledging that he was involved in an incident involving teammate Mario Chalmers and Memphis' Darrell Arthur at the Rookie Transition Program this month. The NBA said Beasley, the No. 2 overall pick, originally failed to cooperate with the league investigation of the matter. The Heat said Beasley eventually chose to reveal that he was part of the incident.

Chalmers and Arthur, former Kansas teammates, were fined $20,000 apiece last week after being banished from the rookie symposium. They were found in a room at the resort where the event was taking place with two women — which violated NBA policy for the event. Security at the resort said the scent of marijuana was detected, but no drugs or drug paraphernalia were found, and Chalmers and Arthur both insisted they were not using any illegal substances. Beasley's involvement in the incident is not clear. He filed papers to dissolve the relationship with his agent, Joel Bell, last week, and was not available for comment Thursday. "While we are disappointed with Michael's involvement, we are pleased that he chose to come forward and stand with his teammate and accept the consequences of his actions," Heat president Pat Riley said in a statement. "We are hopeful that both Michael and Mario have learned from this experience and we will have no further comment on the subject."

None of the three players will be suspended by the league. Chalmers and Arthur will have to repeat the symposium, which teaches incoming NBA players how to handle the on- and off-court rigors of life in the league, next summer.

Gilbert Arenas had a third operation on his left knee Wednesday morning, putting the Washington Wizards in full spin mode as they face another season of uncertainty concerning their franchise player. "I don't know if it is a setback," team president Ernie Grunfeld said. Grunfeld might be the only person who can say that with a straight face. The star player who signed an $111 million contract in July seems almost certain to miss the early part of the regular season at a minimum, dousing the team's hopes of having a healthy campaign after the last two were wrecked by injuries to top players. "It's just an opportunity for other guys to step up and pick up the slack," said Grunfeld, a sentiment he has uttered often in recent years.

The team said the arthroscopic procedure removed a "moderate amount of debris" from Arenas' knee. Grunfeld offered no timetable for Arenas' return, but Arenas told The Washington Post that he plans to be back on the court in early December, which would rule him out for the first month of the season. "When we ramped up his rehab he had some discomfort and some swelling," Grunfeld said, "so they thought this was the right time to do it." The surgery is the third on the knee in 17 months. Arenas missed 69 regular-season games last season and had to shut himself down during the playoffs. Still, Grunfeld expressed no regret about the decision to give Arenas a six-year, $111 million contract after the point guard opted for free agency during the offseason. "This is not a one or two month proposition for us," Grunfeld said. "Gilbert is 26 years old and we are looking at the big picture and we are expecting to have him in this franchise for a long time and to be an outstanding player for us." Arenas first hurt his knee in a game against Charlotte in April 2007. He tried to rush back and was playing in summer league games a few months later. The overzealous approach resulted in a second operation in November, causing him to miss most of the season. Arenas vowed to take a more cautious approach to rehabilitation this summer, but the knee once again did not respond the way he would like.

The doctor who performed the operation Wednesday said debris buildup is common in Arenas' type of injury, and that an MRI showed the knee to be structurally sound. "This was a proactive procedure that will enhance his rehabilitation process," said Dr. Marc Connell, the Wizards' team physician. Arenas has proven to be one of the most exciting players in the NBA when healthy, averaging 22.8 points, 5.5 assists and 4.2 rebounds in his seven-season NBA career. The Wizards played relatively well when he was absent last season, with Antonio Daniels at point guard and Caron Butler asserting more control, but the team lost again to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs."We feel good where we are right now," Grunfeld said, "and I think we will be a very competitive team."

Oden had microfracture surgery on his right knee last September. Recovery time can take as little as six months, but the Blazers exercised caution and sat him for the season.

Despite his injury, Oden was very much a part of the Blazers last season. He was a looming presence on the bench at home games and on many road trips. In the pregame videoboard introduction of the team, his face was right there with those of Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge and the rest of his teammates.

Oden only recently started five-on-five drills with the team. He was among many players who showed up early for workouts before Portland's preseason schedule gets under way Oct. 7 at the Rose Garden Arena against the Sacramento Kings.

That's the word from new Piston head coach Michael Curry. He singled out Rasheed Wallace and said Rasheed has been receptive and working out.

The question was about big man Rasheed Wallace, but you quickly got the feeling new Pistons coach Michael Curry could have been referring to the whole team...
Curry said he had and stressed that he wanted Wallace -- and the whole team -- to be in better shape when training camp begins later this month. If that happens, Curry said the Pistons finally can shed the Eastern Conference bridesmaid status and reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2005. "We talked about focusing more on our strength and conditioning program," Curry said. "Arnie Kander, who we feel is one of the best in the business, I don't think we've taken full advantage of him over the last few years. "I want him (Wallace) to be able to maintain his conditioning throughout the season. You can get in basketball shape, but you can play the whole season but not be in great conditioning as well." Kander is the team's strength and conditioning coach. Curry said he expects to go to Wallace in the low post more and said that to withstand all the bumping and grinding, Wallace needs to be in great shape. Rasheed in the low post is something Piston fans have been hearing for years and years, but coach Curry's plan is for Detroit to focus on "the basics", and posting up your big man is definitely part of basic basketball.

• ..."Going back to the basics," is a phrase Curry will use a lot. Curry respects veteran players and their past success. What he plans to do, though, is reinforce all the little things that led to their success. "It sounds simple, but if the play calls for a pick, set the pick," Curry said. "If you are supposed to be in a certain spot on defense, be there. What's happened is, we've had slippage here and because of our talent, we've gotten away with it. But when that slippage starts seeping in and you get into a series against a team that's just as good as you or better, there is no way you can overcome it."..• Increase the intensity and consistency at the defensive end...The Pistons will play mostly man-to-man. They will extend pressure up the court and apply traps to induce transition baskets...• Establish clearly defined roles. Curry expects to play 10 or 11 players on a regular basis. He said he hopes guards Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton and Rodney Stuckey can average 30 minutes a game, with Arron Afflalo picking up the rest of those minutes. It all sounds pretty encouraging, and Piston fans will see whether coach Curry can turn his philosophy into on-the-court action, even if the philosophy looks a little like court-side cliches. Curry will have a bevy of veteran assistant coaches to help ease him into the responsibility that comes from being a head coach, and has said he will rely on those assistants, but the final decisions will be from coach Curry.

Detroit Piston coaches are excited about what they've see so far from 6-foot-11 center Kwame Brown. "I've been studying big men in this league since 1970 and I am going to tell you this, Kwame Brown, at his size, moves faster and with more control than any other guy that size that I can remember," assistant coach Dave Cowens said.

Head coach Michael Curry agreed. Brown's athleticism and size provide a legitimate post presence defensively. Offensively, he's still a work in progress. But overall, the Pistons are excited to see how Brown, who was signed as a free agent in the offseason, progresses in his new, more nurturing and less pressurized environment. "He's been really good," Curry said. "If the kid was not the first pick in the draft, I wonder what everybody would say about him? I have a list of guys who make $6 million, $7 million a year who haven't done nearly as much as he's done in this league and we got this kid for $4 million." "Kwame has had his ups and downs, but when he's had his ups, he's done things a lot of guys in this league have never been able to do," Curry said.

At the start of camp, it appears that Amir Johnson is going to get the first look at winning the fifth starting spot and play alongside Rasheed Wallace in the front court. But, if Johnson can't secure the spot, Brown could slide up. He is the team's lone big-bodied, true post player and he would free Wallace to be a full-fledged power forward, as opposed to playing a hybrid-type frontcourt role.

http://www.nba.com/pistons/news/sf_080919.html

After a summer that began with his name heavily involved in trade rumors and ended with a gold medal draped around his neck, Tayshaun Prince returns to the Pistons perhaps needed more than ever. If there’s one position where the Pistons’ depth isn’t quite as well defined as others, it’s Prince’s small forward position. Though the Pistons have plenty of options behind the six-year veteran, there’s not one logical player in line as there was last season when Jarvis Hayes was signed as a free agent. Hayes has moved on, signed to a free-agent contract by New Jersey, and it just might be that three-time All-Star shooting guard Rip Hamilton becomes the No. 1 option at small forward when Prince goes to the bench. But it stands to reason that Prince will again challenge for the team lead in minutes played, the position he’s held for three of the past four seasons. “Tayshaun is an example of a guy who has improved each year,” Pistons vice president Scott Perry said. “His skill level has gotten better. His shooting percentage has gotten better. He could always pass the basketball. His knowledge – he’s a very smart basketball player, a great student of the game. He knows all five positions on the floor. That allows him to impact the game in a variety of ways. “He has a good knack for figuring out what the team needs each night. Some nights he might need to score a little more so he takes that role on. Other nights he might need to distribute the ball a little more. Other nights it’s to defend and rebound. He has a good feel and I think that’s really his strength, aside from the great length and some of the natural physical abilities.”

That great feel for the game, coupled with Prince’s defensive prowess and versatility at both ends of the court, made him an easy pick for the U.S. Olympic team though it struck some as surprising – surprising only because Prince doesn’t have an All-Star resume or the gaudy statistics of most of his Olympic teammates. But Prince’s value was apparent throughout the Games as he made key defensive plays, kept the ball moving of offense, hit momentum-stopping shots and always seemed to make good things happen. During one preliminary round game, USA coach Mike Krzyzewski yanked center Dwight Howard from the game for misplaying a pick-and-roll defensive assignment. Too busy coaching the game to correct Howard, he asked Prince to do it instead. “And Mike Krzyzewski had just been around him a few weeks and a few weeks last summer,” Perry said. “That’s why there was a spot on the Olympic team for someone like that. I’m sure Tayshaun, before it was over, knew every spot on the floor, point through five.” Another unappreciated aspect of Prince’s game is his amazing durability. Since moving into the staring lineup to start his second season, Prince hasn’t missed a game – five straight seasons of playing all 82 games. He was Flip Saunders’ security blanket during his three seasons as Pistons coach. Saunders valued Prince not only for his defense but also his ballhandling, often electing to keep Prince in the game whenever Chauncey Billups sat so the backup point guard would have a safety valve at his side.Hamilton began emerging as an option at small forward as last season progressed, frequently taking turns guarding elite scoring small forwards around the Eastern Conference. In a memorable March win over Cleveland at The Palace, Hamilton, playing on a sore hip, held LeBron James to 13 points. “That will play itself out on the court,” Perry said of the possibilities of Hamilton at small forward. “But I can see that. That’s not a far-fetched idea. I like the versatility of our team. I think Michael (Curry) will be in tune with that and not be afraid to explore guys at different positions, give guys opportunities who are coming off the bench to look at different positions where they can help the team.”

Another credible option at small forward is Walter Herrmann, acquired in December from Charlotte in the trade involving Nazr Mohammed. In limited opportunities, Herrmann showed shooting range and the ability to make plays off the dribble. Saunders thought Herrmann was better suited to playing power forward for the mismatches he created, but the Pistons brought him back as a free agent over the summer with the intention of using him at small forward. “He’s a great guy to have with the team,” Perry said. “He’s tough. He has a physical side to his game that we like. He is able to hit an open shot. Defensively, when you’re looking at backup at the small forward position, he’s a guy that changes it up a little bit. He’ll probably defend guys more with his physical ability than using length, like Tayshaun. It will all come together, but he will definitely be looked at to see what he can handle at that small forward position. “The exciting thing for all players when you have a new coach coming in is there will be a new philosophy on the way we’re going to play the game and his approach to using personnel. Mike’s one of those guys, he will find and establish a role for each guy on the team and that’s important.”Though Arron Afflalo will log most of his minutes at shooting guard, he’s a gritty enough defender to match up with all but the most physically dominant small forwards defensively. The final piece to the puzzle at small forward is rookie Walter Sharpe, taken No. 32 overall despite having played just 18 games over his final three seasons of college basketball. Sharpe, a former McDonald’s All-American, was only recently diagnosed with narcolepsy, a sleep disorder, that is now under control with medication. A long, lanky player with a multifaceted offensive game, Sharpe is probably more of a long-range prospect, but the Pistons will put not limitations on him. “Like most rookies, especially a rookie with his background, you’ve just got to see how he learns and comes on. He made strides this summer. But there will be an awful lot coming at him early. The good thing for him and us is there will be patience.”

October 23, 1988. It's not his birthday. It's not the day he graduated. It's not a wedding date or the date he died... This is the date that Myreo Dixon experienced a life-changing event.
In his senior year of high school, a bullet struck Dixon's spinal cord, causing him to become paralyzed from the waist down. Before the shooting, Dixon had skills on the court, although he wasn't the best. To compensate, he focused on strong points like leadership and humility. Once paralyzed, Dixon saw no more room for these traits. Luckily, a friend in the same situation inspired a spark of hope. "I love the game," said Dixon about basketball. "I didn't want to play at first but he [Weusi Olusola] introduced me to wheelchair basketball and once I got use to the chair I felt like I was back in it [the game]." Dixon and some of Detroit's top celebrities will participate in the DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan's (RIM) 7th Annual Celebrity Wheelchair Basketball Game, September 23rd at U of D Mercy's Calihan Hall from 6:30 P.M.- 8:30 P.M.

The game features local TV, sports and radio personalities who play in wheelchairs alongside DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan's wheelchair basketball team, the Detroit Diehards. This year's line-up will include appearances from: Amir Johnson, Detroit Pistons forward, John Long, Detroit Pistons alumni, Doug Brown, Detroit Red Wings Alumni, Scott Kowalkowski, Detroit Lions Alumni, Lila Lazarus from FOX 2, Paula Tutman from WDIV 4, Dave Rexroth and Vic Faust from WXYZ 7, WJLB's Dr. Darrius, Sunshyne, Foolish, Coco, Mr. Chase, Bushman... and more! In addition to the variety of celebtirties, special organizations have significantly contributed their support to DMC RIM in making this event a reality. Those organizations include: Great Lakes Health Plan, Care Tech Solutions, Golden Dental Plans, Chrysler Corporation, Fisher Consulting Services,Total Health Care Dixon is the Adapted Sports Coordinator for the RIM SportsAbility program. SportsAbility works with other community organizations providing on-going programs and instructional sports clinics throughout Detroit. All proceeds from this event will help sponsor this successful program. "I wish people were open-minded to the misconceptions of disabled people," said Dixon. "We're a strong force and active in the community. We're a viable part of the community." He continues on about the assumptions of many individuals he encounters. "Don't assume; ask. Nine times out of ten, we can do the same things as an able-bodied person, just in a different way."

The wheelchair basketball program is just one of the many sports offered through RIM's SportsAbility program, which provides persons with disabilities the opportunity to participate in competitive and recreational sports. All proceeds from the Celebrity Wheelchair Basketball Game will benefit the SportsAbility program. Although a life goal is to be able to travel without cost limitations associated to his condition, Dixon still lives his life a day at a time, appreciating the little things he once took for granted when he walked. "Sports keep us healthy" said Dixon, "and provide a social avenue for networking and friendships. Through the Celebrity Wheelchair Basketball game, I have made many friends and encountered many new challenges." Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased at www.celebritywheelchairbasketball.com. For more information call (313) 745-9817. DMC's Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is one of the nation's largest hospitals specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The Institute is home to many innovative programs, including the Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System (SEMTBIS), which conducts groundbreaking rehabilitation research, and the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery, a world-class facility designed to implement and study innovative treatments in spinal cord injury recovery. RIM is one of eight hospitals operated by the Detroit Medical Center (DMC). The DMC is proud to be the Official Healthcare Services Provider of the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Pistons and Detroit Shock.

Saying that it is time for someone "with a clean, fresh outlook" to lead the city, Detroit businessman Dave Bing confirmed to the Free Press on Thursday that he definitely is running for mayor. "I've made my decision," Bing said in an exclusive interview two months after the Free Press first revealed he was considering a run. Bing plans to participate in the Feb. 24 special primary, where he will face former City Council President Ken Cockrel, who was sworn in as mayor Wednesday. At least a half dozen others also may run. Bing, 64, has moved to a new residence on East Jefferson Avenue with his wife, Yvette. And he has changed his voter registration to the city where he has successfully operated the Bing Group for 28 years. His announcement came on the day before Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick left office to spend time with his family before reporting to jail on Oct. 28. Kilpatrick agreed to a plea deal that requires him to serve 120 days and pay $1 million in restitution, serve 5 years probation and prevents him from seeking public office during that time.

The mayoral scandal prompted hundreds of people to consider runs for public office, but Bing is the only outsider, the person not ever connected to city or county government."I know I'm not a part of it," he said of the scandal. "If you're not in it, you don't have anything to worry about." In two weeks, Bing will make his formal announcement and introduce his campaign management team. He says he wants not only to change the way Detroit runs, but to change the way Detroit views leadership. "It's going to be a tough situation for anybody to manage through," Bing said, referring to the aftermath of the mayoral scandal that has laid waste to the city for nearly a year. "You don't know who's going to be left on the City Council. You don't know who's going to be left as far as the Board of Education is concerned. You don't know who within the administration may or may not be there."I will have a better chance to garner good people to come in and fill positions than anybody else because that's going to be huge," he said. "Having somebody with a clean, fresh outlook is a major positive."

When he first discussed running, Bing also said he would limit his service to one term. But Thursday, he said he might have to be more flexible. "I'm not a quote-unquote politician," he said. "A lot of politicians seem to try to set themselves up for a career, so they try to run multiple terms, and I think that's a mistake. "You can only get elected for one term at a time. If you do a good job, then voters will want to vote you back," he said. "I will keep that option open." His change of heart may have resulted from a closer look at Detroit's myriad problems: a budget deficit, labor contracts that expired in June, and those FBI investigations into the City Council, the school district and the former mayor. Bing came to Detroit to play basketball. He says he didn't get stuck here. He chose to build his life here. He says that when he makes his formal, public announcement in two weeks, he'll be prepared. "I want," he said, "to hit the ground running."

Danilo Gallinari was courtside at the Garden last night, watching a basketball game.

It's something the KnicksNew York Knicks hope does not become a common occurrence once their season begins. And even though he hasn't played since the Knicks shut him down during their summer league in July because of a back injury, their first-round pick echoed his agent's claim that he will be ready soon. "It's coming along and improving a lot," Gallinari said at halftime of last night's Liberty playoff game against the Connecticut Sun. But he wasn't ready to guarantee that he'd be ready to go when the Knicks open their training camp next Friday in Saratoga Springs. "We'll see," said Gallinari, who president Donnie Walsh snagged with his first pick with the Knicks, the sixth overall selection in this year's draft. "I'm optimistic about that."

Gallinari has spent the summer recuperating from the back injury he suffered on July 14 and didn't play with the Italian national team, but did stay with them.

The NBA announced today that Darius Miles of the Boston Celtics has been suspended without pay for 10 games for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program at the end of the 2007-08 NBA season. His violation of the program involved phentermine.

Miles’ suspension will begin with the first game of the 2008-09 NBA regular season for which he is eligible and physically able to play.

Many people wondered this offseason what the Pistons might do with Rasheed Wallace. As training camp approaches, the biggest mystery surrounding the oft-controversial Wallace is who might start alongside him in the frontcourt.

New head coach Michael Curry has crunched the numbers and come to this conclusion: The team might be better off with Antonio McDyess playing a reserve role. Curry wants to make better use of McDyess' offensive skills. "What I noticed with Dice starting last year is he averaged the same number of shots in eight more minutes a game," Curry said at the Flint Boys & Girls Club, as the Pistons wrapped up their two-day Tipoff Tour. "For us, we think he can be more efficient when he's not out there with the starting unit." With Rodney Stuckey feeding the ball to McDyess in the post, the Pistons could have a highscoring reserve corps, if Curry follows up on his plan. "When you have both of those guys anchoring your second unit, you allow the other (reserves) to just play their roles and not to play outside of themselves," Curry said.

Who might replace McDyess in the lineup? Amir Johnson, Kwame Brown and Jason Maxiell are the candidates. Johnson, entering his fourth season, has the most upside. Brown has the most size and experience. Maxiell brings the most energy. "You're not asking Amir Johnson or Jason Maxiell and Kwame Brown to become a primary scorer," Curry said. "You're just asking them to be good in their roles and do the things they do best.Wallace is expected to play reduced minutes, but Curry has urged him to come to camp in top shape and maintain his conditioning throughout the season. Ensuring that has been a challenge for Wallace's previous coaches. Curry also wants Wallace to concentrate more on his inside game, rather than hanging around the 3-point line. "A lot of people talk about Rasheed getting down into the post," Curry said. "I talked to him a lot about that last year. We will call more plays for not only Rasheed but the other guys to get down in the post because getting points in the paint is going to be a main focus. It takes a lot of conditioning, especially as you get older, to get down in that post."

Assistants will have larger roles :Doing things the "Curry Way" means a lot of extra work and preparation for everyone around the team.

The assistant coaches will have expanded duties. Each has been assigned a group of opposing teams and they are expected to know the intricacies of those clubs. They'll also coach drills with each player, rather than focusing on just the guards or the forwards.

The players will spend more time in film sessions, correcting errors and breaking down opponents. "We have to watch a lot more tape, a ton of tape, compared to what they've watched in the past," Curry said. Most of all, Curry wants to reestablish the team as a defense-first club. "We've been good defensively, but I want to be good defensively consistently," he said. "We've had a problem at times maintaining that consistency of play at an extremely high level."

Stuckey aims to play in next Olympics :Stuckey was part of practice squad that helped the U.S. National Team prepare for a successful run through the Summer Olympics.

Come 2012, Stuckey wants to be one of the players wearing the Olympic uniform. Come 2012, Stuckey wants to be one of the players wearing the Olympic uniform. "That's the goal," he said. "That's what I'm working for." Aside from the month he spent in Las Vegas with that select team, he bounced back and forth between his hometown of Seattle and the Detroit metro area while preparing for his second NBA season. "I'm not settling for anything," he said. "I can always get better. I've been doing a lot, working on my jump shot and getting in better shape."

Stuckey will bounce between the point and shooting guard positions this season. "What we're going to try to do as much as possible is get him out on the court with Chauncey (Billups) a lot and Rip (Hamilton) a lot," Curry said. "I think of those three guys as starters. We want to get Rodney's minutes up to where all those guys are somewhere around 30 minutes a night."

The Detroit Pistons expect to start the season next month with the same nucleus they've had in recent years. Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars told The Associated Press on Thursday he's keeping the team together because no one offered him a good deal after he publicly put his players on the trading block in June. "We talked to teams this summer, but nothing was presented to me that would make us better than we already are," Dumars said. "This can be one of the elite teams in the league that contends for a championship."

When coach Flip Saunders was fired, Dumars said Rodney Stuckey was the only player he wouldn't trade in a win-win deal. "Whatever I said at that press conference wasn't new to the players," Dumars said. "They know where I stood then and where I stand now, unhappy about how last season ended." Detroit was eliminated on its home court in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals by the Boston Celtics, who went on to win the title. The Pistons lost in the same round the previous two years, getting sent home by the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat.

Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess have been Pistons since the 2004-05 season, the year after the franchise won its third championship. Billups, Hamilton and Prince are entering their seventh season in Detroit, hoping to at least advance to the conference finals for the seventh year in a row. But Dumars is confident new coach Michael Curry will motivate the old nucleus to play hard. "Part of the reason we hired Michael Curry was that he can instill a sense of urgency in how we play and the discipline that we play with," Dumars said. "Those two things were missing last year, in my estimation." The Pistons open training camp Sept. 29, and their season-opening game is Oct. 29 at home against the Indiana Pacers. "We're going forward with the same nucleus, but I'm still not happy with how the season ended," Dumars said. "But we'll put that behind us, and we'll try to make it right this year."

Britton Johnsen knows the odds are against him. He knows the Jazz roster is already filled to the brim with 15 players under contract. He knows his chances of ending up in an NBA uniform for his hometown team are slimmer than he is.

The former University of Utah standout also knows that opportunities to participate in NBA training camps are rare, especially for 29-year-olds.

Johnsen had other offers from across Europe — where he's spent most of the past four years after short NBA stints with Orlando and Indiana — but he decided to seize the Jazz's offer. And why not? At the very least, he'll get a trip to Idaho out of it. It also could open another NBA door.

If past incidents are any indication, Josh Howard probably won't face any punishment from the NBA for his latest brush with controversy.

While the league still is processing information about Howard's videotaped bashing of the national anthem, previous instances of players saying inflammatory things have not brought forth any suspensions.

But when you think about it, dealing with free-speech situations is a delicate subject. Doing nothing is probably the prudent thing on the league's part, although, again, nothing is for certain. Treading on free speech is often asking for legal repercussions. Besides, the league could have plenty of other reasons to dip into Howard's bank account with his summer street racing and last season's admission of marijuana use.

It what might be the last straw to finalize Goran Dragic’s release to the Phoenix Suns, Tau Cerimaca filled his spot on the roster by signing former Arizona point guard Mustafa Shakur to a one-year contract.

The Spanish team announced the deal on their website Thursday night. Shakur played in seven games for Prokom of the Polish League title last season and is a far cry from NBA caliber after a disappointing career with the Wildcats.

As of Friday afternoon, Dragic was still waiting for word that the completion of his agreement. After that he will return to Slovenia to obtain his work visa before training camp.

Timberwolves star Al Jefferson is expected to miss at least the first week of training camp because of a mildly sprained knee ligament.

Jefferson sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee when he collided with a teammate during a workout at the team's Target Center training facility on Tuesday. A medical imaging test on Wednesday confirmed the mild sprain, which is expected to sideline him two to three weeks.

Training camp begins Sept. 30 in Mankato, Minn. "It's always a concern when your best player goes down clutching his knee like he did," Wolves assistant general manager Fred Hoiberg said in a moment of understatement. "It was a relief when we found out it was a mild sprain." Veteran center Jason Collins is expected to miss all of the preseason because of an arm injury sustained in a golf cart accident. Jefferson was injured on the second day he trained with rookie Kevin Love, with whom he will be paired in the team's frontcourt.
