• Jefferson, Randy Foye, Mike Miller and the team's personnel staff, including coach Randy Wittman, traveled to Chicago last week to work out free agent Shaun Livingston, the former Los Angeles Clippers guard, who is attempting a comeback after missing all last season because of a major knee injury.

Livingston tore three of his four knee ligaments in February 2007. A 6-7 point guard drafted directly from high school, Livingston never has played more than 61 games in his three NBA seasons because of injuries. The Wolves appear interested in signing him to become a third option behind Foye and Sebastian Telfair. He also can play some shooting guard and small forward, but might not be healthy enough to play until mid-season.

NBA Developmental League guard Blake Ahearn, who played on the Wolves' Las Vegas summer-league team, is expected to be added to the training-camp roster.

Former St. Edward High School star Jawad Williams has been invited to take part in the Cavaliers' training camp, which opens with media day on Sept. 29. Williams, a 6-9, 218-pound forward who played on the Cavs' summer league team, has played in the NBA Development League and overseas since graduating from North Carolina in 2005. He had a brief stint with the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2006-07 season.

Roster move: The Cavs granted guard Billy Thomas his request to be released. He signed a guaranteed contract to play in Greece.

When the 76ers open Training Camp the morning of Sept. 30, three guys, two with Philadelphia connections, will be -- in theory -- competing for roster spots. The Sixers have extended invitations to former Temple star forward Antywane Robinson, former Iowa big man Jared Reiner, and former Strawberry Mansion standout guard, Maureece Rice, a source within the organization confirmed.

Robinson, 6-foot-8, averaged 8.0 points in his Temple career, which ended after the 2005-06 season. During that senior season, Robinson averaged 12.7 points and 5.0 rebounds. He spent the 2006-07 season with Sioux Falls of the NBA Development League, where during 49 games he averaged 6.4 points in 16.7 minutes per game. Last season he spent mostly in France, playing for the club Pau-Orthez. Rice, a 6-1 guard, was most recently (March, 2008) dismissed from the George Washington University basketball team. Before that, though, Rice scored 2,681 points to break Wilt Chamberlain's (2,206) Philly high school scoring record. Rice also played one season at Lutheran Prep, where he averaged 32 points, before he enrolled at GW. The 6-11 Reiner led the Big 10 Conference in rebounding when he was a junior at Iowa. Undrafted out of college, he played 19 games with the Chicago Bulls in 2004-05. Since, he's been cut by three NBA teams (Clippers, Suns, and Spurs), including getting cut by the Clips while he was "still on the tarmac." (I found a great blog, penned, presumably -- for one can never be too sure these days -- by Reiner himself. Check it out.) Reiner, per this blog, spent some time in the aforementioned D-League, as well as in Spain and Germany. Incidentally, after losing in the playoffs with his German team three months ago, Reiner wrote this:

"You know the feeling like you want to just lock yourself in a room and burn past lovers’ items while Melissa Etheridge is crying out her music in the background? That is how I felt sitting on the bus after we lost. I had the worst taste in my mouth as I looked upon our faithful ‘Freaks.’ Crying wasn’t in the cards for me though. Tom Hanks said that “There’s no crying in Baseball,” so why would there be crying in my sport. Our team just couldn’t get things going in the playoffs, for whatever reason. We were the exact opposite of John Mayer’s love life. Really, he always overachieves with the ladies, and we underachieved in the postseason."

Heat rookie Michael Beasley was slapped with a $50,000 fine from the NBA Thursday for his involvement in an incident at the league's Rookie Transition program but will not face suspension or be required to the repeat the symposium next year, a league spokesman said. Beasley will not be punished further by the Heat.

Beasley - the second overall pick in the draft - admitted to league officials this week that he was part of the same incident at the symposium earlier this month in Rye Brook, N.Y. that resulted in Heat point guard Mario Chalmers and Memphis Grizzlies forward Darrell Arthur's expulsion from the program and $20,000 fines. Beasley received a higher fine because of his failure to cooperate with the league's investigation into the incident. The league's investigation had ended but then Beasley opened up about having been, for at least some period, with Chalmers and Arthur in their room, where resort security found two women and detected the smell of marijuana. ''While we are disappointed with Michael's involvement, we are pleased that he chose to come forward and stand with his teammate and accept the consequences of his actions,'' Heat president Pat Riley said in a statement. ``We are hopeful that both Michael and Mario have learned from this experience and we will have no further comment on the subject.''

Beasley's camp could not be reached immediately for comment. The former Kansas State star completed the four-day seminar, but a league source indicated Beasley would have been sent home with Chalmers and Arthur and thus forced to attend the program next year had the NBA known of Beasley's role. Security did not find drugs or drug paraphernalia but having guests in the hotel room violated NBA policy, leading to Chalmers and Arthur being banished. Next year they will be required to attend the symposium, which focuses on challenges players might face during their transition to the league.Arthur and Chalmers apologized but denied using marijuana. Beasley, meanwhile, has had a tumultuous several days leading up to training camp. He severed ties with agent Joel Bell and now must find a new agent and pay a hefty fine. The Heat will hold its first training camp practice Sept. 27.

http://thehoop.blogspot.com/2008/09/jum ... aaber.html

Jumaine Jones was suspended earlier in September for signing 2 contracts with 2 different teams, Ural Great and Armani Jeans. For this reason FIBA suspended the player for one year from playing anywhere in Europe. His suspension will end on August 25th 2009 and until Jumaine Jones will only be allowed to play in a non-european team.

According to goalday.gr this has created a new status quo for cases of players that have signed with 2 different teams. This might as well apply in the case of Ibrahim Jaaber and his persistence to play for Lottomatica Roma instead of returning to Panionios. Jaaber was performing impressively on the court in Greece as a player of Egaleo and that attracted the interest of Lottomatica Roma who saw in him a versatile guard that can score, pass and steal with equal ease. Jaaber signed with Roma until the end of the season but also signed a contract with Panionios for next season before leaving to go to Italy.

The administration of Panionios requested a buy-out amount to release the player that Roma did not pay and so Panionios took the matter into the FIBA judicial system. Panionios won't budge and now Jaaber is between the rock and the hard place and there is a possibility that he will be suspended for an entire season from Europe. Panionios will not get any money and Roma will lose the player's services for a whole season... it remains to be seen what FIBA will decide.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says forward Josh Howard realizes his comments about the national anthem were wrong and the player has apologized. In his online blog, Cuban also responded to e-mails he has received commenting on the player's remarks by saying Howard "will work with us" and "beyond that, it's a private issue."

Cuban posted a number of the inflammatory replies on his blog Thursday night, with the apparent e-mail addresses of the senders. But by Friday night, Cuban's remarks slugged "Thanks for the advice on Josh" had been removed from the blog and replaced with a posting saying "I made my point." Howard's comments, in a video posted on the Web site YouTube, show him on a football field at a charity flag football game. As the national anthem plays in the background, Howard approaches a camera and says: "'The Star-Spangled Banner' is going on right now. I don't even celebrate that [expletive]. I'm black."

Some e-mails said that Cuban posted made blatant racist remarks about Howard. Others suggested Howard should move to another country, be fined or fired. Cuban's updated response said his original posting was "the right thing to do," but he says it left him with an upset stomach all day Friday. "I thought it was important to point out the hatred and ignorance of so many who quickly judge people they have never met, based purely on soundbites and headlines," Cuban wrote late Friday. "I wanted to point out the irony of them experiencing the onslaught of attention from suddenly and unexpectedly being placed in the media spotlight from a throwaway comment." Cuban said he knew those e-mailers would be receiving "the same level of hate, ignorance and judgment as Josh had and that's what bothered me all day." Cuban ended by saying: "Hopefully something good came from it being posted." Cuban did not immediately respond Friday night to an e-mail from The Associated Press.

President Bush on Friday welcomed the Boston Celtics to the White House to celeberate the team's 17th NBA championship, declaring "Celtic pride is back." Bush saluted Celtics' captain Paul Pierce, who led the team to a title and was MVP of the finals despite suffering a knee injury early in the series. "Playing hurt in a championship game is the ultimate sign of leadership," Bush said during an East Room ceremony. The team's players, owners and coaches presented the president with a green Celtics jersey emblazoned with "43," a nod to Bush's standing as the 43rd president, and an autographed basketball. The team also said it would send a $100,000 check to the Red Cross to help victims of Hurricane Ike. Celtics fans, a few wearing Red Sox caps and many, like Vermont Sen. Pat Leahy, snapping photos with their cameras, packed the East Room.

The Celtics beat the Los Angeles Lakers in six games in June to end a 22-year championship drought. The title capped a dramatic turnaround for the Celtics, who had the second-worst record in the NBA during the 2006-07 season. The Boston Celtics presented President Bush with a team jersey and an autographed basketball during an East Room ceremony at the White House on Friday.Bush said that like other sports fans across the country, he was delighted that this year's bruising final series rekindled the old Celtics-Lakers rivalry. "For baby boomers like me, that is the -- that was a reminder of a great basketball rivalry," Bush said. "So, like, Boston fans were screaming, 'Beat L.A.!' at the top of their lungs, and that's exactly what this team did in six hard-fought games." It was the Celtics' first title without Red Auerbach, the famed team patriarch who died in October 2006 after being part of the other 16 championships, nine as coach. The fortunes of the team turned around when it obtained guard Ray Allen from Seattle and forward Kevin Garnett from Minnesota in separate trades before last season. Hosting Boston's successful pro sports teams at White House ceremonies is nothing new for Bush.

In February, the 2007 World Series champion Red Sox were honored at the White House for the second time in four years. The New England Patriots have three Super Bowl wins, beginning in 2002. The Patriots were last honored at the White House in 2005. Bush joked that a friend had suggested he could host a "Boston Three Party" for the city's championship teams. After the ceremony, Pierce said meeting the president was more nerve-wracking than the NBA finals."I got real nervous back there, my hands were sweaty," he said. "I was more nervous right here today." Bush, who is winding down his presidency, wished the team well defending its title this season. But he added that a new president will be hosting next year's White House event for the NBA champs."Should you win it, you can find me in Texas," he said with a laugh.

Of course this is an overstatement. But that’s the inescapable burden of the NBA. I’ve been around this league for almost 30 years and believe its people are better than in any sport. No, golf isn’t a sport.

My preseason nominations are the Kansas Three, rookies Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur from Kansas and Michael Beasley from Kansas State. No, kids, you aren’t in Kansas anymore. And you shouldn’t have brought Dorothy to rookie orientation. Or her sister.

Boston Celtics forward Darius Miles has been suspended without pay for 10 games for violating the terms of the anti-drug program at the end of the 2007-08 season.

Miles' suspension will begin with the first game of the 2008-09 regular season for which he is eligible and physically able to play. Miles has missed the past two NBA seasons because of knee injuries. He has averaged 10.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in his career.

The 26-year-old was selected third overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2000 draft. He signed with the Celtics last month.

I actually did everything I was supposed to after the season. I sat out a whole month without doing anything. No nothing. No rehab, no jogging, no nothing. I took the time because whatever the pain was that felt like a pinch or a bruised bone, we felt that over time, with me not doing anything the pinch would go away. Then we started working out and the pain started coming back, the pain that was in the back of the knee. We ended up finding out that it was debris and swelling that was causing that pain. The pressure that was inside the knee was causing one of the nerves back there to be pinched and it was causing me pain. It wasn’t pain to where I couldn’t play, but it was pain to the point where I couldn’t get through rehab the way I wanted to and before I stepped on the floor I didn’t want anything holding me back.

The decision in the summer was that they had to go in the knee at some point and clean out all of the debris from the previous two surgeries. So the option they gave was we could see if the debris moves itself, or we could go in there and wash it out ourselves. Like anybody, I didn’t want to go through a third surgery on my knee, so I decided to let it heal over time and keep rehabbing and the debris would work its way through. But I’m just sitting at home and thinking, “Man, I’m rehabbing twice a day and I still haven’t touched a basketball.” I haven’t shot a ball, I haven’t run lines, I haven’t done nothing on the basketball court. It was just rehabbing. The first day I tried to run on the machine called the Alter-G where I used 50 percent of my body weight and the next day I was sore. Just that one part was sore, the knee itself was fine, but there was that aggravating pain there. It feels like hitting my funny bone, that’s the pain that kept going, it was just aggravating.

I was at the gym one night with the trainer for one of our late-night sessions. I usually work on my core, then rehab my leg and then go and work out the youngsters. I go work out McGee, I work out Linton (I don’t know what his last name is) and I work out Nick Young. I just work them out and put them through some drills to get them ready for training camp. So it was right before I was going to work them out and we were all talking and they were seeing where my mind is at and I told them that if it wasn’t for this lagging in the back of my knee I would be fine. I can play through swelling and pain, but this little thing going on down there was irritating me. Eventually I asked the trainer, “When do you think this will go away and when do you think I can get back on the floor?” He was like, “Realistically, you know you were going to miss preseason.” And I was like, “Yeah …” And he was like, “Well, you might miss the first month of this season too.” So I was like, “Well, I might as well go and get it cleaned out then.” All the doctors said that if I do get it cleaned out, then it might help me out in the long run because it might actually speed up my recovery because I won’t have that pain that’s keeping me from the stuff I need to be doing. I was like, “Well, I really don’t want to operate on my knee again, but if that’s what’s going to help, then I guess I have to.”

Art Thompson III of the Orange County Register: "With Luke Walton hoping but not guaranteed to be a full strength when training camp begins in 12 days, this presents a ripe opportunity for Trevor Ariza to stake his claim to the starting small forward position. I know what Laker fans are saying, 'What about Lamar Odom?' Odom has discussed with the basketball staff the possibility of accepting a sixth-man role, which has all sorts of delightful possibilities to it, due to the 6-foot-10 Odom's versatility. He could come off the bench to play small forward or play the two position (shooting guard) or power forward. The Lakers' staff even has discussed with Odom the possibility of him being a hybrid point forward and initiating the offense in that role."

Gilbert Arenas for NBA.com: "I had to explain that to my dad too, he was like, 'BOY, YOU'RE GETTING ANOTHER SURGERY?! WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOUR KNEE NOW??!!' I was like, 'Dad, there's nothing wrong, I just have to get the debris cleaned out.' ... I have to make sure my knee is 100 percent and I have to make sure that mentally I'm there and once those components come, the basketball is second nature to me, I do that 24/7. I'm sitting here with my knee up high and elevated and I'm dribbling a basketball. I have almost 42 basketballs in my house. I got one in the toilet, I got one in the pantry & When I'm bored, that's what I do, pick up a basketball. I love basketball. This right here is for the real fan of mine though. You hear about the story of where I came from and what I had to deal with, but to come back from injury is going to be more empowering to young kids. I'm going to do whatever it takes to get back there."

Chris McCosky of The Detroit News: "Michael Curry joined the Pistons' preseason bus tour for its final two stops (Flint and Toledo) Thursday and offered a glimpse of what to expect from his first training camp. ... Pay attention to detail ... Daily conditioning and player development sessions ... Increase the intensity and consistency at the defensive end ... Increase scoring in the paint ... Establish clearly defined roles. Curry expects to play 10 or 11 players on a regular basis."

When Al Jefferson crumpled to the court and grabbed his knee, the Minnesota Timberwolves feared the worst. "When you have a heart condition and your heart stops for a minute, it's not a good thing," said Wolves assistant general manager Fred Hoiberg, who had to retire from the NBA because of an aorta problem. "It was a relief when we found out that it was just a mild sprain."

Jefferson injured his right knee during a recent pickup game with teammates. A magnetic resonance imaging exam revealed a mildly sprained medial collateral ligament, and Jefferson is expected to miss only two to three weeks. Team doctors have told him he will be back well ahead of the Oct. 29 opener against Sacramento. "It's always a concern when your best player goes down clutching his knee like he did," Hoiberg said Thursday at a gathering that marked the 20th anniversary of Wolves basketball in Minnesota. "He'll miss two weeks and we'll be careful with it and make sure he's 100 percent before he starts going again."

Losing him for any length of time would have been a crushing blow to a rebuilding young team coming off a miserable first season without Kevin Garnett. Jefferson, acquired from Boston in the Garnett trade, was one of the few bright spots in a season in which the Wolves went 22-60 and tied for the third-worst record in the league. Jefferson averaged 21.0 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, both career highs. He was one of only four players in the NBA to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds. "I'm hoping for a speedy recovery from him because we're going to need him from the get-go in order to win some games," said rookie forward Kevin Love, who took Jefferson's place Thursday at the ceremony that honored charter season-ticket holders.

Mike Barrett's Blazers.com Blog: "Greg Oden continues to impress everyone, and played in about six games on Wednesday before taking off to a community appearence. A guy who has also been incredibly impressive has been Jerryd Bayless, and that continued Wednesday. He had several vicious dunks, with one of them coming off a lob pass, in traffic, from Sergio Rodriguez. I knew Bayless was explosive, but I can't say that I expected him to be able to rise above the rim as easily as he does. As you know, there is one roster spot available, and the competition for this spot is going to be interesting. Steven Hill, Luke Jackson, and Shavlik Randolph all look very good. Randolph, who spent his first three years with Philadelphia, has played well. Hill, who starred for Portland's summer league team, is an NBA player, and is a very likable guy. And, of course, there's still a chance Portland could decide to extend an offer to Shaun Livingston, who is in town being evaluated. I have not seen this process up close, but I can tell you they're continuing to investigate."

Julian Garcia of the New York Daily News: "Not only is Julius Hodge physically stronger than he's ever been, he feels mentally tougher as well. An incident that nearly ended his life 2-1/2 years ago has made him so. Late in his rookie season, Hodge was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting on a Colorado highway and came within minutes of bleeding to death. After struggling to resume his career, getting traded and eventually playing overseas, Hodge is ready to make his comeback -- and the Nets are giving him a chance."

The prognosis for Jason Smith: A postsurgery night in the hospital, then who knows how many nights before he resumes playing for the 76ers. Smith, the second-year big man, had successful reconstructive surgery on his left knee yesterday. The procedure was performed by Dr. David Altcheck at the Hospital For Special Surgery in New York. Dr. Jack McPhilemy, the Sixers' orthopedic specialist, observed the procedure.

Smith suffered a torn anterior-cruciate ligament Aug. 6 at an NBA-sanctioned camp in Las Vegas directed by longtime coach Tim Grgurich. The Sixers have not publicly set a timetable for Smith's return, but he will likely miss the coming season. "We're not thinking that way," said Mark Bartelstein, Smith's agent. "That's not the plan. We just want whatever is in Jason's best interests. "It would be good to have him ready for next summer, but that's too far down the road. No one's worrying about that now. What's important is to get him ready to come back."

Smith, from Colorado State, averaged 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in 14.5 minutes last season, then averaged 3.3 points and 2.5 rebounds in 13.7 minutes in six playoff appearances. By all accounts, he showed more aggression and better strength in five games in the Las Vegas Summer League. *

Deanna Nolan scored 22 points to lead the Detroit Shock to an 81-72 victory over the Indiana Fever on Friday night in the opener of the WNBA Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.

Taj McWilliams-Franklin added 17 points and seven rebounds, and Plenette Pierson had 11 points for the Shock. Game 2 of the best-of-three series will be Sunday in Detroit. The Shock swept Indiana in three regular-season games and have won five straight over the Fever, including the last two games of the 2007 conference finals.Tamika Catchings posted 19 points and seven assists, Ebony Hoffman scored 19 points, and Tan White chipped in 11 for the Fever. Before the game, Hoffman was chosen as this season's most improved player in the WNBA.

To advance to the conference finals, the Fever will have to win two games in Detroit. Last year, Indiana lost at Connecticut in the first game of the opening round and then won the next two at home. Game 3 of this series will be played Tuesday, if necessary. The Shock, who shot 59 percent in the first half and opened a 39-29 lead, took their biggest advantage, 68-52, on Katie Smith's two free throws with 7:42 left in the fourth quarter. Indiana cut the deficit to 77-68 on White's layup with 1 minute left, but McWilliams-Franklin pushed the lead back to 12 points with a three-point play on Detroit's ensuing possession.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (Charles F. Gardner) reports: Andrew Bogut is scheduled to return to Milwaukee from Australia this weekend, and the 7-foot center is expected to be ready for the opening of the Milwaukee Bucks’ training camp Sept. 30. Bogut suffered a badly sprained left ankle while competing for Australia against the U.S. during the Beijing Olympics, an injury suffered when he got tangled up with Team USA star Kobe Bryant. But a magnetic resonance imaging exam showed no serious damage, and Bogut has been rehabilitating the injury in his hometown of Melbourne for nearly a month.

The Washington Post (Paul Tenorio) reports: One day after having minor arthroscopic surgery to clean out debris in his surgically repaired left knee, Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas posted a 2,210-word blog entry yesterday in which he said he will likely return from the procedure between mid-December and early January — several weeks later than the early December return he originally set Wednesday morning. “I know time frames are dicey, but they said anywhere from mid December to January 1, I’ll be back by then at 100 percent,” Arenas posted in the entry. “I should be, if everything goes well. So that’s the Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza present I’m hoping for.”

InsideHoops.com editor says: Maybe Gilbert is such a good blogger that people who enjoy reading what he writes are sneaking into his home at night, taking out tiny hammers, and lightly slamming his left knee while he sleeps, softly enough to avoid waking him, yet hard enough to do additional damage over time. Anyway, to repeat myself, the Wizards aready know how to play without Gilbert. Eventually they’re going to forget what it’s like to play with him.
