Nice to know there are some things we can still count on. In this NBA era where hugs and friendly banter among stars precede every big game, a couple of '80s rivals maintain a heavy disdain for one another to this day.

Bill Laimbeer, in Indy to coach the WNBA Detroit Shock, was on the air with 1070 The Fan's Eddie White and Bob Kravitz for an extended interview this afternoon. I always hated Laimbeer as a Piston but fully appreciated his game, knowing if he was on my team I'd love the way he drove everyone on the opposition nuts. The whole interview is interesting because Laimbeer is one sharp dude. He's smart, witty and still has no problem dishing it out. Now to the good stuff. In the middle of the interview, Larry Bird's name was brought into the conversation and it was obvious the two haven't mended any fences since fighting for the ultimate NBA prize throughout the late '80s. Their careers overlapped for 11 Eastern Conference seasons and numerous intense playoff games. So while the following video is the most overt reason for the bad blood, I'm sure the two share knowledge of hundreds of other incidents involving errant elbows and vile comments that were never noticed by the masses. By the way, don't miss the 3:30 mark. Is that a young John Green? Detroit Cup City.

This history appeared fresh in Laimbeer's mind today as he took some humorous shots at Bird, first pretending he didn't know what Bird was doing and then landing a few not so subtle jabs about Bird's lack of success in the front office with the Pacers. He did admit that turning around a struggling NBA team is tough and requires losing at some point plus some luck to get the right talent. Here are my favorite parts of the interview.

Patrick Hayes of the Flint Journal had a chance to talk with Arron Afflalo, Rodney Stuckey and Michael Curry. Afflalo has this year’s talking points down:

With Michael Curry as the new coach, defense is kind of his staple. Do you think that will help you get more minutes and fit into his system (easier)?

“It will definitely help me, but it is something that will help the entire team. Its no mystery about championship teams that your base has to be defensive, a defensive mindset. The Pistons won in 2004 with that mindset and I think we can win again with that same mindset. We have the players to score points, its just about are you willing to stop your opponent, and just go from there.”

Rodney Stuckey's goal: Play in the 2012 Olympics. It's a great thing for Team USA -- To be the dream of good young players. He also tells Patrick Hayes of MLive.com that the Bad Boys are back: "I'll tell you one thing, our defense and defensive standpoint, things are going to be a lot different. We're gonna be picking up full court, trying to get back to our old ways of playing Bad Boys defense. That's something to look forward to this coming year."

Stuckey was part of practice squad that helped the U.S. National Team prepare for a successful run through the Summer Olympics.

Come 2012, Stuckey wants to be one of the players wearing the Olympic uniform.

“That’s the goal,” he said. “That’s what I’m working for.”

This was mentioned in Chris McCosky’s article that I linked to this morning but I forgot to mention it: “Curry expects to play 10 or 11 players on a regular basis.” I love it. Absolutely love it. When you have the talent, there’s nothing wrong with a deep rotation, especially when most of the guys coming off the bench are also high-energy types who wear the other team down.

Update: Chris McCosky has a funny anecdote from the Pistons’ cross-state caravan:

Both are confident young players and both have a passion to compete and win. But Afflalo’s competitiveness is completely off the charts — and I mean that in a good way. In Travese City, they had a free throw shooting contest with a kid from the Make-a-Wish Foundation. The kid beat both players, which was sort of pre-arranged, I think. Stuckey completely played his Washington Generals role. He had one last shot to win the contest, but he moved several feet back and rimmed it out. Afflalo couldn’t get himself to throw the match. He was actually upset — good-naturedly so — that he missed his last shot because one of the organizers of the thing had jumped at him and disrupted his final shot.

Danilo Gallinari: "Gallo" is still banged up a little bit,..so he's just been shooting and riding the bike...but this kid is very VERY confident!! He listens, works hard and wants to get better. Some of you guys may have booed him when we drafted him, but he is going to be a big time player for us one day!

Allan Houston: He's back and looks a lot healthier than he did in his last comeback attempt last season...I think he may have rushed that one a little bit, but he looks a lot better this time! AND of course we all know his jumper is razor sharp!!!!!!! I can learn a lot watching him.

At the start of camp, it appears that Amir Johnson is going to get the first look at winning the fifth starting spot and play alongside Rasheed Wallace in the front court. But, if Johnson can't secure the spot, Brown could slide up. He is the team's lone big-bodied, true post player and he would free Wallace to be a full-fledged power forward, as opposed to playing a hybrid-type frontcourt role.

When the 76ers open Training Camp the morning of Sept. 30, three guys, two with Philadelphia connections, will be -- in theory -- competing for roster spots.

The Sixers have extended invitations to former Temple star forward Antywane Robinson, former Iowa big man Jared Reiner, and former Strawberry Mansion standout guard, Maureece Rice, a source within the organization confirmed.

Detroit Piston coaches are excited about what they've see so far from 6-foot-11 center Kwame Brown. "I've been studying big men in this league since 1970 and I am going to tell you this, Kwame Brown, at his size, moves faster and with more control than any other guy that size that I can remember," assistant coach Dave Cowens said.

Head coach Michael Curry agreed. Brown's athleticism and size provide a legitimate post presence defensively. Offensively, he's still a work in progress. But overall, the Pistons are excited to see how Brown, who was signed as a free agent in the offseason, progresses in his new, more nurturing and less pressurized environment.

"He's been really good," Curry said. "If the kid was not the first pick in the draft, I wonder what everybody would say about him? I have a list of guys who make $6 million, $7 million a year who haven't done nearly as much as he's done in this league and we got this kid for $4 million." "Kwame has had his ups and downs, but when he's had his ups, he's done things a lot of guys in this league have never been able to do," Curry said.

JCF: First things first: I gotta tell you - I get more emails about you and your comeback from injury than I do about any other player on the team. It's unreal. Do you have any idea how many people are interested in you and how you're doing?:SF: I think it's because this is where I began my career. I've grown to love Houston, the Rockets and everybody. And it's overwhelming and it feels great knowing that I have the opportunity to make this team better.

JCF: So let's get right to the question everybody wants to know: Everyone wants to find out if we're going to see the old Steve Francis again. How are you doing physically?:SF: I'm not going to sit here and say I'm 100% because I'm not. I still have a ways to go. It's going to be a tough process, but I'm willing to sacrifice. Even if I don't start the season, I know within the next three or four weeks I'll be 100%. I don't want to go out there if I'm not 100% and possibly re-injure myself.

JCF: So you're looking at another three or four weeks until you're 100%, or before you can go full-out on the court?:SF: Before I can go full-out. The surgery I had, they say it normally takes people about a year to come back. I'm at month six and hopefully within the next three to four weeks I'll be ready to go.

The Detroit Shock have one focus: Game 2 against the Indiana Fever. The Shock, who have aspirations of winning their third WNBA title since 2003, beat the Fever 81-72 Friday night in the opener of the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. Detroit, which swept Indiana in three regular-season games and has won five straight over the Fever - including the last two games of the 2007 conference finals - can wrap up this best-of-three series at home on Sunday. "Close-out games are really hard,'' said Shock center Taj McWilliams-Franklin, who had 17 points and seven rebounds. "The good thing is that we're going back to Detroit, where we're much more comfortable, to play in front of our fans. "Right now, we're just individually focused on each game. We're focused on the Indiana Fever and what we need to do to get through this series.''

Deanna Nolan had 22 points, and Plenette Pierson scored 11 for the Shock. "They have trouble with our personnel, our starting five,'' Nolan said of Detroit's recent dominance over Indiana. "It doesn't matter who they try to stop, somebody else is going to get off.'' Tamika Catchings posted 19 points and seven assists, Ebony Hoffman scored 19, and Tan White chipped in 11 for the Fever. Before the game, Hoffman was chosen as this season's Most Improved Player in the WNBA. To advance to the conference finals, the Fever will have to win two games in Detroit. Last year, Indiana lost at Connecticut in the first game of the opening round and then won the next two at home. Game 3 of this series will be played Tuesday, if necessary. "We'll have to dig down deep and find it within ourselves,'' Hoffman said. "We'll have to find pride in ourselves to get an extra rebound, box out and do some of the little things.'' The Shock, who shot 59 percent in the first half and opened a 39-29 lead, took their biggest advantage, 68-52, on Katie Smith's two free throws with 7:42 left in the fourth quarter.

Indiana cut the deficit to 77-68 on White's layup with 1 minute left, but McWilliams-Franklin pushed the lead back to 12 points with a three-point play on Detroit's ensuing possession."The most important thing is to play focused and hard,'' Shock coach Bill Laimbeer said. "It's a long series, and win or lose the first game, it's important to find out who you are and what you're about. Fortunately, we were able to come away with the win.''Indiana coach Lin Dunn was disappointed with her team's effort. "We had great momentum going into this game, but Detroit is the best team in the league and showed it,'' she said. "We're going to refocus and go up to Detroit.''

Goran Dragic still is waiting on the minutiae of his buyout to wrap up. It has limited him to workouts rather than scrimmages but the Suns are still confident the buyout, travel and visa will be completed before camp starts. Tau Ceramica has filled part of the backup role pegged for Dragic by signing former Arizona Wildcat Mustafa Shakur, who must contend against the Argentine point guard tag team of Pablo Prigioni and Matias Nocedal.

The NBA made official today what was already expected to be a setback in Darius Miles' return to the NBA: Should Miles be healthy enough to play, the league will suspend him for the first 10 games of the season.

The press release from the league: "The NBA announced today that Darius Miles of the Boston Celtics has been suspended without pay for 10 games for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program at the end of the 2007-08 NBA season. His violation of the program involved phentermine. Miles' suspension will begin with the first game of the 2008-09 NBA regular season for which he is eligible and physically able to play."

The number "10" is also notable for Miles in another way. If Miles plays more than 10 games this season for the Celtics, or any other NBA team, his $9.3 million annual salary will be picked up by the Portland Trail Blazers, fulfilling the terms of the NBA's career-ending injury policy. An interesting twist: After his 10-game suspension, the 11th game Miles could potentially play is against Portland on Dec. 5 (game No. 21 for Celtics).

Free agent point guard Shaun Livingston was in Portland this week for a physical, and Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard said he will decided this weekend whether the team will approach Livingston's agent about a contract.

Livingston, who missed all of last season recovering from a catastrophic knee injury, worked out for the Blazers last week in Tucson, Ariz. After the workout, the Blazers requested Livingston's medical records and for the 23-year-old to be examined by Blazers doctors. "I need another 24-to-48 hours to think about it,'' Pritchard said Friday afternoon. "I haven't sat down and done all the pros and cons. Once I do that, we will come to a decision about where we want to go. And even if we do decide to move forward, whether a deal gets done or not is another question.''

The Clippers waived Livingston in July. Livingston's agent, Henry Thomas, said the doctor who performed reconstructive surgery on Livingston's knee has cleared him for competitive play. "The knee is pretty much recovered,'' Thomas said. "He has been cleared to play 5-on-5. Now, he's not where he needs to be from a conditioning standpoint ... and in terms of how much he plays and how the knee responds, only time will tell.'' Livingston has also worked out for Minnesota and Miami, and Thomas said his client is looking for a situation where he "feels comfortable with the coaching staff and the team.''

The Blazers will open training camp Sept. 30 with 14 guaranteed contracts, one shy of the league maximum. They have already extended training camp invitations to forward Luke Jackson, center Steven Hill and guard Jamaal Tatum, but Pritchard has made no commitment to entering the season with 15 players.
