In a move anticipated by the Celtics, the NBA announced yesterday it was suspending Darius Miles for the first 10 games of the season.

The forward had tested positive for a banned substance - the diet drug phentermine - last spring. “We knew that this was out there,” director of basketball operations Danny Ainge said. “We did our own checking on it.”

Miles, who signed a non-guaranteed contract with the C’s over the summer, was with the Portland Blazers last season and is attempting to come back from chronic knee trouble.

It was interesting to get Gilbert's full take on his rehab and the timing involved with the latest decision to go under the knife. The December-January timeline seems to make sense but given the history of his situation, we're all going to have to sit back and see how this plays out. I know that some folks are very upset by all of this but do you really blame Arenas for this latest setback? As I've reported citing team sources familiar with his rehab and as he states himself, the guy did everything he was supposed to do after shutting it down during the playoffs. No pick-up games on the blacktop, no running around the field at Cardozo high school with a parachute strapped to his back and no biking all over the city. And even the biggest Arenas hater has to admit that the guy seriously loves the game and is going to work his tail off to get back to his old self.

The thing hovering over all of this of course is that contract. I said this when he signed it and I'll repeat it now: from here on out, everything Gilbert does will be viewed through the context of the $111 million Abe Pollin and Ernie Grunfeld committed to him. When he scores 35 points in a loss, folks will ask why he didn't have 12 assists. If he misses a game-winner, folks will say that a guy making that much should make that shot. If this team loses in the first or second round, folks will point to the contract and say that he is not a true franchise player. As I've mentioned before, I grew up in Minneapolis and those are the exact kinds of things that were said about Kevin Garnett after he signed his huge deal back in the day. "Why can't he get them out of the first round?" "He's a great player but not a clutch scorer in the fourth quarter." "He's not a real leader." Etc. Etc. Etc.

Now that KG is a champion, nobody mentions the contract. That's just the responsibility that comes with that kind of money and it's going to be very interesting to see how Gilbert and the team handles it in the weeks, months and seasons ahead. I just traded a couple of texts with Gilbert on this whole thing and this was his message to the fans: "It was a tough call (he was referencing the latest surgery) but I didn't want to risk a whole year again. That wasn't fair to the team or the fans. Right now, they are going crazy but when I come back 100 percent, nobody will say anything."

frank in :Assuming the Knick deal of Zack R. to Memphis is dead, could N.Y move Zack to either Clev. (for Wally Sz.) or to DET. (for Rasheed). Zack would likely really be a force on either Clev or Det,no? W

Preetom Bhattacharya:All indications are that the Randolph deal is indeed dead. As far as Cleveland picking him up .. I don't think he's the kind of big man they need. It would be nice to get someone that is a pure low-post scoring threat and JJ Hickson can become that, it's just too much to ask of him right now. Randolph isn't enough of a post player to make sense. For Detroit, that deal won't happen with Dumars basically saying that he'll stick with his guys and I actually don't think that would be a smart deal for Detroit anyway because of the defense Sheed can bring (unlike Randolph).

Travis in Michigan:What do you think Rodney Stuckey's stats will be in his second year with the increased amount of playing time he will be getting?

Preetom Bhattacharya:I like him, but until you move Billups, he won't get enough playing time to get huge production. I'll say 12-14 points, 4 rebounds, 3-5 assists until Billups. is gone.

Travis in Big Rapids, MI:I recently read an article from SLAMONLINE that ranked Richard Hamilton as the 40th best player in the NBA? Isn't Rip a little underated for how consistent he has been the last seven years?

Preetom Bhattacharya:Rip is really underrated as far as what he contributes to his team. But when you start listing all the guys in the NBA like that, I can see how he's going to fall. I do agree that Rip is underrated, but I'd have to see how this list was made to see why he was 40th. Off the top of my head, I'd probably put Rip a bit higher, but ranking every player is a tall task.

http://www.hoopsworld.com/college/story ... y_id=10030

As you can tell by our nearly complete NBA season previews, basketball is right around the corner. Training camps open up soon and before you know it basketball season will be fully underway. Here at HOOPSWORLD though our coverage isn't just limited to the NBA. The opening of the NBA season means we're just that much closer to the start of college basketball. The 2009 draft isn't exactly overflowing with franchise players, but it's a talented group nonetheless. With that in mind, here's a look at ten of the top prospects eligible to enter the 2009 NBA Draft. Ricky Rubio - 6'4 Point Guard (DKV Joventut):Thanks to the Beijing Olympics Ricky Rubio may be more of a household name than any collegiate player. He isn't even 18 years old yet but Rubio has himself firmly on the NBA radar because of his incredible ability to run a team. Rubio has the natural instincts required to be a great, true point guard. Combine that with a complete offensive arsenal and you have what could be a top three pick come draft time. One of the few knocks you will here against Rubio is regarding his lack of athleticism. However, Rubio knows how to play the game and utilize everything that he has in terms of speed and quickness.Blake Griffin - 6'10 Power Forward (Oklahoma):With Kevin Love now playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves Blake Griffin is arguably the best big man in the country. Not to slight Tyler Hansbrough, but Griffin is the real deal. At 6'10 and 240 lbs Griffin possesses a silky soft touch around the rim and is a physically imposing presence. His game really mirrors Utah Jazz power forward Carlos Boozer's, although his face up game is not as reliable as Carlos'. Griffin has a chance to be the Player of the Year this season, and don't be surprised if come around draft time there is some serious consideration to choosing him with the top overall pick.

B.J. Mullens - 7'0 Center (Ohio State):The top center prospect in the draft is once again a Buckeye. It won't take very long for B.J. Mullens to draw people's attention at Ohio State. He's a legit 7' footer that will amaze you with his leaping ability, soft hands, and how well he runs the floor. All that is keeping Mullens from being a lock as the number one pick is the effort he plays with. If Thad Matta can light a fire under him though, sky is the limit for how good he can be. There will be stretches where Mullens will flat out dominate, although there's no reason why he should do so every single night. Brandon Jennings - 6'1 Point Guard (Lottomatica Roma):For college basketball it's unfortunate that Brandon Jennings opted to go overseas, because he would have been a joy to watch under Lute Olsen at Arizona. Jennings is a pioneer though, and if the path he's chosen to take even ends up somewhat successful expect others to follow. Like Rubio Jennings is a true floor general that sees plays before they even develop. He's got the athleticism and speed that Rubio lacks. Jennings was always believed to be a one and done candidate, so don't expect him to be overseas for long. Hasheem Thabeet - 7'3 Center (UConn):If rims hadn't already been reinforced and made stronger because of the likes of Darryl Dawkins, Shaquille O'Neal, and Dwight Howard they would be for Hasheem Thabeet. Even at 7'3 and 260 lbs Thabeet is sickening athletically. Thabeet's ceiling is really unknown at this point as he hasn't been playing the game for a very long time, and lacks the knowledge of the fundamentals. His natural tools make him a very intriguing prospect and under Jim Calhoun the big fella is making strides. He may actually need another season at UConn before he's developed enough to help an NBA team, but his upside is off the charts. James Harden - 6'5 Shooting Guard (Arizona State):The turnaround at Arizona State can largely be contributed to the diamond in the rough they found with James Harden. Harden had a freshman season on par with Jerryd Bayless, O.J. Mayo, and Eric Gordon but wisely decided to stay in school another year. All Harden needs to show to cement his spot in the top ten is improving ball handling skills and creating ability. Harden may once again have trouble grabbing the headlines in the Pac-10 with talented freshmen Demar DeRozen and Jrue Holiday coming in, but NBA teams know how good this kid is and it'll show on draft night.

Jrue Holiday – 6'4 Point Guard (UCLA):Ben Howland couldn't have found a better fit for his program than Jrue Holiday. For a program that is making yearly appearances in the Final Four Holiday will fit right in thanks to his competitiveness and desire to win. Holiday is a complete player that will be able to contribute right away. Like Kevin Love he may not be there for more than a year, but a backcourt combination of Holiday and Collison should help lead the Bruins to another Final Four. Demar DeRozen - 6'6 Shooting Guard (USC):Having O.J. Mayo for only a year doesn't seem bad at all when he's replaced with a player the caliber of Demar DeRozen. Like Mayo Demar is a savant at scoring the ball and on any given night is a threat to explode for some major numbers. Even if he's at USC for one season only DeRozen is going to have an extensive highlight reel because he's one of he best athletes in the country. Under Tim Floyd DeRozen is going to become a star, make no mistake about it. Al-Farouq Aminu - 6'9 Small Forward (Wake Forest): One of the big reasons for optimism at Wake Forest is Al-Farouq Aminu. He may not be there for long though, because at Aminu has the skills to be an All-Star small forward someday. Offensively his game is expanding at a high rate, and once he's able to handle contact better he's going to be near impossible to stop. He excels in the open court and has the potential to be a stopper on the defensive side of the court thanks to his length and athleticism. He's definitely a player to keep a close eye on this season. Damion James - 6'7 Small Forward (Texas) :It's easy to go unnoticed when you play alongside D.J. Augustin and Kevin Durant in your first two years. Damion James is one of those guys that can do whatever you ask from him. Like Shawn Marion he can guard perimeter players or big men, and he's got a lot of versatility on offense. This is a big season for James as he's going to be expected to lead the Longhorns like Augustin and Durant did when they were the stars. Expectations are high, but it's going to give James a chance to send his draft stock sky high if he succeeds.

Miles Suspended 10 Games: $5 and a bag of Doritos. That's all it would have taken for Darius Miles to sign with the Boston Celtics. "I want to be a part of this team," Miles told Peter May of Yahoo! Sports. "This is the ultimate situation. I would have played on this team whether I got a check or not."

But Miles comeback with the defending champions will have to wait. On Friday the league suspended Miles for 10 games without pay for his violation of the NBA's Anti-Drug Program at the end of the 2007-08 season, Miles' infraction involved the diet drug Phentermine. Miles might not begin his suspension on Opening Night, though. According to league policy, the punishment will be implemented on the first game of the regular season in which he is eligible and can physically play. Miles signed a non-guaranteed contract with the Celtics and his return to basketball is still uncertain.

Should Miles make the team, this will be the second consecutive year in which a member of the Celtics will serve a suspension on Opening Night. James Posey was suspended for the first game of last season related to reckless driving charges.

"P.J. Brown is Retired":This month Boston Celtics forward Leon Powe told HOOPSWORLD he did not expect P.J. Brown to play again next season. On Friday's trip to the White House, Celtics GM Danny Ainge confirmed Brown's decision. "P.J. is retired," Ainge told the Boston Herald. "Today was just an enjoyable day, and we should probably leave it at that. P.J. knows that we'd love to have him back, but right now he's done."

That's not to say that Celtics won't be making phone calls later in the season. Brown had all but retired last year before Ray Allen and Paul Pierce approached him during All-Star Weekend to sell him on the Cs. Powe already tried the same tactic this summer. "[Before I came back to Boston this summer] I told him to come back," Powe said. "I said, 'Ok, you can come back in the second round of the playoffs.' He said, 'Nah big fella, I'm going to leave it up to you guys.'"

After 15 seasons in the NBA, Brown capped off his career with his first NBA championship in June.

From DetNews.com: “There’s nothing to patch up,” Dumars said. “I’m the one who was upset, so who do I need to patch things up with? It’s been good. Guys understand that six straight years of making the conference finals and going to the NBA Finals only twice isn’t enough and I am not going to rest on that. What you do is keep pushing, keep moving forward.”

Trail Blazers Still Unsure on Livingston:This time last week the Portland Trail Blazers were at the forefront of three teams interested in signing Shaun Livingston. Seven days later, GM Kevin Pritchard has yet to make a move. Even though Livingston was in Portland this week to undergo physical evaluations, Pritchard needs more time to decide whether or not to offer a contract.

"I need another 24-to-48 hours to think about it,'' Pritchard told the Oregonian. "I haven't sat down and done all the pros and cons. Once I do that, we will come to a decision about where we want to go. And even if we do decide to move forward, whether a deal gets done or not is another question.''

The cons could outweigh the pros in this situation. While Livingston, a former fourth overall draft pick, is young and has potential, there is no telling how his gruesome knee injury will affect his long-term performance. Also, the Trail Blazers are already stacked in the backcourt and Livingston wants to play now. Livingston isn't looking for short money either. With the Trail Blazers on the books for $18 million should Darius Miles play 10 games (see below for more on his return), they cannot tie up their payroll in an unproven back up PG.

President Bush on Friday welcomed the Boston Celtics to the White House to celeberate the team’s 17th NBA championship, declaring “Celtic pride is back.”

Bush saluted Celtics’ captain Paul Pierce, who led the team to a title and was MVP of the finals despite suffering a knee injury early in the series. “Playing hurt in a championship game is the ultimate sign of leadership,” Bush said during an East Room ceremony.

The team’s players, owners and coaches presented the president with a green Celtics jersey emblazoned with “43,” a nod to Bush’s standing as the 43rd president, and an autographed basketball. The team also said it would send a $100,000 check to the Red Cross to help victims of Hurricane Ike. Celtics fans, a few wearing Red Sox caps and many, like Vermont Sen. Pat Leahy, snapping photos with their cameras, packed the East Room.

Free agent point guard Shaun Livingston was in Portland this week for a physical, and Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard said he will decided this weekend whether the team will approach Livingston's agent about a contract.

Livingston, who missed all of last season recovering from a catastrophic knee injury, worked out for the Blazers last week in Tucson, Ariz. After the workout, the Blazers requested Livingston's medical records and for the 23-year-old to be examined by Blazers doctors.

"I need another 24-to-48 hours to think about it,'' Pritchard said Friday afternoon. "I haven't sat down and done all the pros and cons. Once I do that, we will come to a decision about where we want to go. And even if we do decide to move forward, whether a deal gets done or not is another question.''

The future of Andre Miller with the 76ers can become an official discussion point. That is because Miller, who has been without an agent, agreed to have Andy Miller represent him. Andy Miller confirmed yesterday that he has been in touch with Sixers president/general manager Ed Stefanski to set up an introductory meeting. Andy Miller also represents Sixers first-round draft choice Marreese Speights.

Andre Miller, 32, is entering the final season of his contract, listed at $10 million. Most observers thought he was last season's team Most Valuable Player. "Ed and I are just going to talk about everyone's perspective," Andy Miller said. "Andre is optimistic about where the team is and is excited about the immediate future."

One point of discussion almost certainly will be the possibility of a contract extension. "As far as his own future, Andre's waiting until we've all had a chance to do our due diligence," Andy Miller said. Andre Miller most recently was represented by Lon Babby.

I have a story running in Saturday's Newsday that reports the deal that would have sent Randolph to the Memphis Grizzlies for Milicic and Marko Jaric is now dead. Multiple sources said the Grizzlies, who were already hesitant to begin with after long internal discussions about taking on Randolph's contract, decided to pass on the deal.

You may recall the Grizz wanted the Knicks to make several concessions in the trade, from agreeing to pay a chunk of the deferred portion of the contract to including a first-round pick in the deal. Donnie Walsh declined and left it up to the Grizzlies to come back with a better offer. Instead, they folded. It was the second time this offseason that a chance to move Randolph's three-year, $48 million contract did not result in a trade. The Clippers had interest in him back in July, but also wanted the Knicks to give up a first-rounder in a deal that would have sent a second-round pick to New York. Walsh said no to that and the Clippers instead traded the second-rounder to Denver for Marcus Camby.

But the Grizzlies talks seemed to have a lot more potential, though they never picked up steam after a few conversations in early August. Still, the players involved heard enough to make them believe something was imminent. Randolph had told friends he thought he was headed to Memphis and Milicic told a Serbian media outlet a week ago that he felt it was "99 percent" certain he would be in New York by the end of the week.

For the second time in this offseason, trade discussions involving Zach Randolph have failed to come to fruition.

Knicks president Donnie Walsh was most recently engaged in talks with the Memphis Grizzlies, but multiple sources told Newsday that the Grizzlies have since reconsidered and decided to pass on Randolph. Walsh is still looking to find ways to shed Randolph's hefty contract, which has three years and $48 million left on it, but for now it appears that the 6-9 forward likely will remain a Knick when training camp opens in 11 days. Last month, Walsh and Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace discussed a deal that would have sent Randolph to Memphis in exchange for center Darko Milicic and swingman Marko Jaric. The Grizzlies, however, also wanted Walsh to give up a first-round pick in the deal. With the Knicks' 2010 first-round pick already earmarked for the Utah Jazz as part of the Stephon Marbury trade from 2004 - the pick was originally traded by Isiah Thomas to the Phoenix Suns, who later traded it to Utah - Walsh does not want to give up any more draft picks.

But Walsh does want to rid the Knicks' payroll of Randolph's salary, which pays him $14.6 million this season, $16 million next season and balloons to $17.3 million in 2010-11. Randolph did put up good numbers last season - 17.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game - but he is not considered a good fit in coach Mike D'Antoni's up-tempo scheme.

Anyway, I saw the news about Gilbert Arenas being out until December or January after undergoing yet another left knee surgery. Wow, this is beginning to look bad for the Wizards.

Look, every GM makes mistakes, even the league's best. Joe Dumars drafted Darko Milicic over Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh. Bryan Colangelo drafted Andrea Bargnani over Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge. Kiki Vandeweghe signed Kenyon Martin to a max contract. And so on. So Ernie Grunfeld's decision to sign Arenas to a $111 million contract doesn't mean he is a bad GM. In fact, he's a very good one. But the decision could haunt the franchise for years.

I thought Washington overpaid Arenas this offseason whether he was healthy or not. My thinking was that if the Wizards pay him $111 million when they've already invested big money in Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison, that trio had better be able to lead the Wiz to the Finals. I don't believe they can. In fact, with the East getting stronger, they may not even get the Wizards out of the first round every year (or any year). So the Wizards potentially locked themselves up financially for an exciting team that would be first- or second-round and out every year. But I guess they could've hung their hat on the fact that at least Gil would've filled up the arena. Now, he may not even do that. We have to seriously wonder if he'll ever be the same player again. He'll be back no doubt, but will he be as good as he was before his knee injuries set in? For the sake of the Wizards and their fans (and Gilbert, too), I hope so. But we certainly can't be sure.

UNC Asheville's Kenny George, at 7-foot-7 the nation's tallest college basketball player, is not expected to play this season because of a foot injury.

George had two surgical procedures for a serious infection on his right foot and remains hospitalized under the care of a specialist. The senior is not expected to return to school this semester."It's very unlikely that he'll play this year," coach Eddie Biedenbach said.

Biedenbach said George first felt discomfort last month during Pete Newell's Big Man Camp in Las Vegas. When he returned to his native Chicago a doctor recommended immediate surgery. George was the Big South's defensive player of the year after helping the Bulldogs win a school-record 23 games and reach the NIT last season. George averaged 12.4 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.3 blocks.
