Mariners for #1 overall pick in 2009
I hate to say it, but I would love to see the mariners continue to be at this level of suck for the rest of the season. If they were to do it, they have had great success with thier ability to pick prospects at the top of the board.
1993 Alex Rodriguez SS, Westminster Christian HS, Miami Mariners
1987 Ken Griffey Jr. OF, Moeller HS, Cincinnati Mariners
1981 Mike Moore RHP, Oral Roberts Mariners (largely above-average but played at that level for may years)
1979 Al Chambers OF, Harris HS, Harrisburg, Pa. Mariners (never reall panned out, but hey, it was thier try)
They have shown an ability to pick high quality players with their picks at the top.
HERE'S TO A SUCCESSFUL (and by that I mean continued suckage) END OF THE SEASON!

Re: Mariners for #1 overall pick in 2009
There's no question who the #1 pick will be this next season...
Strasburg, Felix, and Morrow would be a heck of atop three, and a top flight pitcher might be a need since Bedard's never going to pitch for the M's again. Consider it a nice consolation prize for the horrible level of suck we've been forced to endure this season.

Don't forget Philippe Aumont. Our rotation for the 2011 season could be Felix/Strasburg/Morrow/Aumont/(token 5th starter)...that'd be one of the best in the AL. Likely, best in the AL West.

Re: Mariners for #1 overall pick in 2009
HA! I just came to start this very thread. How important to get the #1 pick. LOL
Well, we're a game out in front of the Nationals, and San Diego has fallen off with an untimely short winning streak. 6 games to go. 1-5 should do it.
Go M's!!!

I know there's been a lot of talk in San Diego about landing the hometown kid. Sorry to ruin it for you, Padres. You can't have him. Not yours.

what would be best for the M's situation a pitcher or power hitter?

There's also a kid named Michael Pineda who's at the same level of Aumont that probably qualifies as "raw and intriguing."

There's certainly enough about this team to be excited about it's future, but in the meantime there's some contracts that need to be unloaded or simply ridden out. And the team has to find some sort of offensive prospects...I can't think of one call-up, with the exception of Clement, that I am the slightest bit excited about as a future Mariner. Sorry, but Balentien's been completely awful. Lahair's come down to earth, and Tui/Hulett haven't done anything to demonstrate how they would really fit in on next year's team.

Probably a power hitter, as they simply don't have one.
But you can't pass up on Strasburg. You just can't. With Bedard done, you're relying on Felix and Morrow to anchor the staff. Morrow's still rough...he had one great game and several promising but mediocre ones afterwards where he's had some issues with his command.
If there were a power hitter that was an equal talent to Strasburg available in the draft, I might reconsider...but at this point it doesn't seem as if there is one.

well, i have no idea what so ever about this guy strasburg.
i know it's not accurate, but comparing it with an actual MLB pitcher, who does he resembles the most?

Don't apologize to me. I hear you. We might as well start the list with Raben, since he's got the most power in the system IIRC. Then we have our OF prospects (Saunders, Halman, Peguero) and Adam Moore. That's really it because we don't have anything in the middle of the infield or at 3B to replace Beltre. The Mariners' best offensive hope may be to stick to the strengths of the system, clear some cash and sign a marquee FA to bolster the offense in some way.

Allright. 4 games to go.
Marniers 58-100
Royals 59-99
Royals own the tiebreaker. 1-3 would probably do it, but let's not take any chances. Let's dump them all. Send Silva, Batista, a nobody, and even Clement out to pitch if you have to. Don't eff up the best thing that could come out of this long, dark season.

With the way the season's going, I wouldn't be surprised if they went 4-0.

Re: Mariners for #1 overall pick in 2009
Man! Strasburg would be a great addition..
God, if only the Mariners would realize they play in one of (if not the most) most pitcher friendly ball parks in all of baseball and built their team around that they would be division contenders every year.
look at what the 2001 team did.. They had phenomenal pitching and great defense. This is the EXACT recipe that this Mariner franchise needs to follow to produce winners.. Not with Sluggers like Richie Sexson..
COME ON MARINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, brain fart. Nationals.
WTF are the Mariners doing putting up 10 runs last night when they are on the cusp on securing the #1 pick in the draft next year, and the potential to draft the best pitching prospect in some time? Why is Ichiro even playing? We're trying to lose here.
I just know it. The M's are going to finish in a TIE with the Naionals for worst record, and the Nationals get the #1 pick because of the tie breaker. Would that not sum up the entire dimensionality of the suckitude of the Mariners this season? They can't even lose right.

Mariners lose #1 pick today with a 2 game winning streak. They manage to win when it's not in any way in their interests to do so.
I can't even be happy about their suckitude.

Re: Mariners for #1 overall pick in 2009
Depending on who you ask it's either Dustin Ackley, or Grant Green as for the next best pitcher it's Aaron Crow (Who the Nats took in the first round last year and couldn't sign)
Ackley was an OF who had Tommy John surgery and became a first baseman. I believe his fielding percentage was .997 as a first baseman this year at UNC. He is a lefty, but his projections seem to be a 300+ hitter and a 20hr guy. I'm hearing he may be a 2B in the pros. Two years ago he was consensus Freshman of the year, last year he was an All American. He turned down a chance to play for team USA this past year. http://breakingbats.com/baseballdraft/2 ... in-ackley/
Grant Green is the shortstop for USC, Green is known as a 5 tool prospect while being productive at the college level. I've heard he's higher rated then Beckham who went #1 last year as a SS. I've heard his defense compared to Tulowitzki's, but I don't know how legitimate those comparisons are. He is definitely projected as a SS, which may be a problem for us having Trunfiel, unless we think he should be a 2B or 3B. http://breakingbats.com/baseballdraft/p ... een-grant/

I bet there's a chance the Nationals don't take Strasburg. They wouldn't give Crow his money and so I can't see them swallowing Strasburg's. Oh did I mention Boras represents both of these guys?
It's not a given Strasburg is a W.
