Rodney Stuckey averaged 7.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game in the regular season and raised his scoring and assist averages in the playoffs to 8.2 points and 3.4 assists per game. Stuckey is among the top young players in the league and is expected to see a major spike in his minutes this season. He also was just the third rookie in Pistons history to start a playoff game, joining Joe Dumars and Tayshaun Prince. Stuckey was in Flint Sept. 18 as part of the Pistons Tip-Off Tour. I think I interrupted his attempt to get a game of pool going with Arron Afflalo, but he was still kind enough to answer a few questions.

First of all, you know, heading into this season is a little different than last season when you weren't as well known. Now a lot of sports outlets have you as one of the top young players in the league. How have you prepared going into this season vs. last?:"Just gonna still do what I do. Same stuff I did last year, that's what I'm gonna be doing this year. Nothing's gonna change, you know, I'm just going to prepare myself like I did last year."OK, for you as the third guard on the team, you split time being on the court with Billups sometimes and Hamilton sometimes. Do you adjust your game or play any differently depending on who you are on the court with?:"No, not really. I think when I'm in the game with Chauncey, coach wants to have the ball in Chauncey's hands more. When I'm in with Rip, he wants the ball in my hands more so Rip can come off screens and what not. Things are gonna be the same offensively with stuff like that, but I'll tell you one thing, our defense and defensive standpoint, things are going to be a lot different. We're gonna be picking up full court, trying to get back to our old ways of playing Bad Boys defense. That's something to look forward to this coming year."

Does that pressure defense suit your (individual) game better?:"Yeah, absolutely. I mean, that's what I did in high school and college, gettin' up full court, putting a little bit of pressure on the offense, you know, taking a little time off the shot clock, that's what we're trying to do. You know, we're gonna do a lot more trapping and stuff like that. That's my type of game. It leads to easy baskets for us."As a young player on a veteran team, how do you assert yourself more? There's only so many minutes to go around with four guys who are All-Star caliber players in that starting lineup.:"You know, M.C. (Michael Curry) will find ways to find my minutes, or anyone's minutes. Like I said, nothin's gonna change. My role might be a little bigger this year, but as far as going out and preparing to do something different, I'm just still going to be out there just playing hard."

I'm getting some questions about Juan Dixon possibly making a return to the Wizards. Here's what I can tell you: The Wizards indeed have interest but I'm hearing that to this point, they are only willing to sign him to a non-guaranteed deal for the vet minimum. In other words, he'd have to come to camp and make the team to make any real money.

The team is in the process of finalizing a training camp roster but I can confirm that Linton Johnson and DeMarr Johnson among the players who are in line so far. DeMarr Johnson is an intriguing guy because he can swing between the 2 and the 3 and he has starting experience in the league. He played five games with the Spurs last season after stints with Atlanta, the Knicks and Denver. He has started a total of 176 games since 2000-2001.

Linton Johnson is a 6-8 forward who has appeared in eight games over two seasons with Toronto and Phoenix. Both Johnson's would be in line to push Dominic McGuire as potential backups to Caron Butler. As I've reported in the past, the team would really like to find a reliable backup at the 3 in order to reduce Caron's load and in order to be prepared should he go down again.

Clearly, the issue remains a delicate one, as Livingston, 23, works his way back from a devastating knee injury suffered in the middle of the 2006-07 season. And while the Trail Blazers appear to be frontrunners, the Timberwolves still maintain interest, as, possibly, does the Heat, which opens camp a week from today.

The situation remains fluid, which has Thomas being cautious and economical with his words. When it comes to semantics, Riley rarely lets words get in the way.

With 14 players currently under contract (including of course, Gilbert Arenas) the Wizards don't have much room below the luxury tax threshold and Ernie Grunfeld would iike maintain some level of roster and financial flexibility should the team get hit with a rash of injuries as it did last season.

Last season when he split time between Toronto and Detroit, Juan made around $2.55 million. Right now he's out of work as far as the NBA is concerned so it will be interesting to see what he can land in the the next week or so. As far as the reports that Juan has "worked out" for the Wizards are concerned, don't read too much into that. He has always regularly worked out at the VC during the off-season when he's been in town.

Lakers executive Mitch Kupchak claims that the Grizzles where looking to acquire Sun Yue in a trade, according to NBA.com.

"Memphis also wanted Sun in the trade, but we wanted to keep at least one of those two guys so Memphis wanted Marc [Gasol] and we are happy that we were able to keep Sun Yue, because we liked him when we drafted him," Kupchak said.

Finally caught up late Friday night with agent Henry Thomas, who answered some pointed questions regarding reports that had linked the Heat to free-agent point guard Shaun Livingston. Q. Has Shaun, as had been reported, worked out for Pat Riley this week?
A. "He has not."
Q. Is a workout scheduled with Riley or the Heat?
A. "It is not."
Q. Does that mean the Heat no longer is involved?
A. "It's still up in the air a little bit."
Q. When will Shaun make a decision?
A. "He wants to be with a team in time for camp."
Q. Is Shaun in position to play at this stage?
A. "I think he can get on the court."

Speaking of smart players and tinkering, Emeka Okafor once again spent the off-season experimenting with new training methods. He looks trimmer than he did, but says he’s slightly heavier than last season at around 265 pounds.

Okafor said he did a series of very specific exercises to work individual muscle groups. The goal was to break up some scar tissue that he felt was hurting his flexibility, without losing strength.

He looks springy in pickup games, but who’s to say if that’s about how he trained his body, or the rest he got throughout the off-season?

The american power forward Britton Johnsen(2.07) is currently trying to secure a contract on the NBA according to the Deseret News. Johnsen has played in quite a few teams in Europe before. He has played for Alicante in Spain, for Panellinios in Greece, for Orthez in France and the Euroleague and last season he played for Galatasaray after recovering from a serious injury.

He has also played for Indiana and Orlando in the NBA but he didn't get much playing time. He said in an interview that he wants to try his luck in pursue of an NBA contract although knowing that the chances are slim. He also said that he has offers from Europe but this is his main priority now. Johnsen averaged 5.4 points and 4.4 rebounds in 10 games for Galatasary last season.

He played for the Jazz at the Rocky Mountain Revue this summer but an injury on his left thigh allowed him to play only 2 games. Johnsen will be joined at training camp by fellow NBA hopeful Gerry McNamara, a 6-2 point guard from Syracuse, among others who have not yet been announced.

Macedonia, Israel and Bulgaria added their names to list of teams headed to EuroBasket 2009 on Saturday, leaving out some old familiar faces like France and Italy, who will need to battle for the last remaining ticket at next summer's last chance qualifying event. Those three join Serbia, Latvia, Turkey and Great Britain, who advanced on Wednesday as well as host Polan and the six teams that took part in the Olympics – Spain, Russia, Lithuania, Greece, Germany and Croatia – plus Slovenia, which took part in the Pre-Olympic Qualifying tourney. On Saturday, Macedonia won Group B when it bested Estonia 87-75 behind Zadar big man Todor Gecevski's 18 points and Portugal stunned Latvia 93-92. Israel crushed the Czech Republic 98-61 as Olympiacos’s Yotam Halperin recorded 25 points and 7 assists to clinch second place in Group D. That led to a ticket to EuroBasket when Turkey topped France 78-80 to finish the qualifying rounds as the only undefeated team.

Serbia confirmed its status as the best in Group A by beating Bulgaria 77-87 to finish 7-1. Nenad Krstic of BC Triumph led the way for Serbia with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Milos Vujanic of Efes Pilsen hit back-to-back triples to spark a 2-12 first period run as Serbia took charge. The visitors continued to pull away and led 30-49 en route to an easy win. Vujanic and Zoran Erceg of Olympiacos added 11 points apiece for Serbia. Ibrahim Jaaber of Virtus Roma scored 27 to pace Bulgaria, which finished the campaign in second with a 4-4 record. Finland overcame Hungary 88-73 as Kimmo Muurinen, Shawn Huff of Marousi and Petteri Koponen all scored at least 20 points and Tuukka Kotti had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Finland finished 3-5, while Hungary, which got 22 from Tamas Kanan, dropped to 2-6. In Group B, Gecevski led five Macedonian scorers in double figures with 18 in an 87-75 win over Estonia. The hosts ended the opening period on a 24-4 tear in which Real Madrid’s Jeremiah Massey scored 7 to set the tone for the win. Macedonia finished 4-2 and edged Latvia for first place on a tiebreaker when the Latvians fell 93-92 at Portugal on a Miguel Miranda three-pointer with six seconds remaining. Portugal improved to 3-3 and finished third in the group, while Estonia was last at 1-5. Jose Costa paced Portugal with 29 points and 7 assists.

Turkey used a splendid team effort to spoil France’s EuroBasket hopes with a 78-80 win in Limoges. Tony Parker carried France with 37 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals, but had little help from his teammates, while Turkey had four players with at least a dozen points. Fatih Solak put Turkey up by 7 with 2:19 remaining and France was unable to come all the way back. Yakhouba Diawara missed a potential go-ahead three for France with seven seconds left and BC Triumph's Kerem Tunceri got the rebound, drew a foul and put Turkey up 3 from the line. Solak led Turkey with 16, Sinan Guler of Efes Pilsen added 14 and Tunceri 13 for the winners. Belgium grabbed third place in Group C after beating Ukraine 58-76. Christophe Beghin posted 18 points and 11 rebounds for Belgium, which finished 2-4. Serhiy Lishchuk of BC Kyiv scored 21 for Ukraine. Israel barreled over the Czech Republic 98-61 thanks to 25 points and 7 assists from Halperin and 24 points and 6 assists from Bnei Hasharon's Meir Tapiro. Maccabi Electra forwards Lior Eliyahu and Yaniv Green combined for 30 points and 13 rebounds for Israel, which went 3-0 at home, but 0-3 on the road. Petr Benda of CEZ Nymburk scored 16 in defeat. Bosnia-Herzgovina topped Group D leader Great Britain 89-80 to secure third place. E.J. Bremer scored 18 and dished 6 assists for the winners. Andy Betts had 14 points and 8 rebounds to pace the Brits, who finished 4-2.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says forward Josh Howard realizes his comments about the national anthem were wrong and the player has apologized. In his online blog, Cuban also responded to e-mails he has received commenting on the player's remarks by saying Howard "will work with us'' and "beyond that, it's a private issue.'' Cuban posted a number of the inflammatory replies on his blog Thursday night, with the apparent e-mail addresses of the senders. But by Friday night, Cuban's remarks slugged "Thanks for the advice on Josh'' had been removed from the blog and replaced with a posting saying "I made my point.''

Howard's comments, in a video posted on the Web site YouTube, show him on a football field at a charity flag football game. As the national anthem plays in the background, Howard approaches a camera and says: "'The Star-Spangled Banner' is going on right now. I don't even celebrate that (expletive). I'm black.'' Some e-mails that Cuban posted made blatant racist remarks about Howard. Others suggested Howard should move to another country, be fined or fired. Cuban's updated response said his original posting was "the right thing to do,'' but he says it left him with an upset stomach all day Friday. "I thought it was important to point out the hatred and ignorance of so many who quickly judge people they have never met, based purely on soundbites and headlines,'' Cuban wrote late Friday. "I wanted to point out the irony of them experiencing the onslaught of attention from suddenly and unexpectedly being placed in the media spotlight from a throwaway comment.''

Cuban said he knew those e-mailers would be receiving "the same level of hate, ignorance and judgment as Josh had and that's what bothered me all day.'' Cuban ended by saying: "Hopefully something good came from it being posted.'' Cuban did not immediately respond Friday night to an e-mail from The Associated Press.

Here is the cumulative effect of what Howard has accomplished for himself since the infamous radio interview on "The Michael Irvin Show" on April 25. When the Mavericks hold media day Sept. 29, it will be mandatory for Howard to answer this question: "Since it was the off-season and you have stated publicly that you smoke marijuana in the off-season, were you under the influence of marijuana when you said you don’t celebrate the national anthem because you are black?"

If not for Josh Howard’s words and actions, this question would not have to be asked. And I’m going to let fans, readers and Mavericks officials in on a little secret. Despite our reputation for too often embracing negative stories, no member of the media is happy about the necessity of covering the issues generated by Howard. Media day for an NBA team is supposed to be about basketball. Absurd behavior is the last thing I want to address. But there’s more. Because of Josh Howard’s words and actions, there is little doubt that he has lost credibility with the sporting public. And I’m not talking about the lunatic fringe that has been sending hateful e-mails to Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and reporters.

And I would feel safe in saying that Howard has no idea what a difficult year he faces. While it’s true that a few good games may sway the home crowd, the heckling on the road will be intense and vicious. There will be banners. In passionate basketball cities like Boston, New York and Philadelphia, there very well may be obscene chants and derisiveness.

Then there's my man Darius Miles, who will miss the first 10 games of the NBA season allegedly because his use of phentermine (an appetite suppressant) violated the league's anti-drug policy. Miles signed with the world champion Boston Celtics during the summer.

Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer: You can see new coach Larry Brown's defensive focus in the team signing Shannon Brown and Donell Taylor, at least for training camp. ... The way Gerald Wallace is blocking shots and driving to the rim, it's clear he's regained his explosiveness after a nasty groin pull late last season. ... Emeka Okafor says he gained a few pounds this summer, but he looks lighter and more flexible, as he was his rookie season. ... Best training-camp competition should be between point guards Raymond Felton and D.J. Augustin."

Tau Baskonia is on the lookout for one last player to complete their front line according to unconfirmed sources. Dusko Ivanovic apparently has 3 players at the top of his list and all of them are highly skilled and qualified.

At the top of the list is ukrainian center Oleksiy Pecherov(2.13-C) of the Washington Wizards. The 23-year old center didn't get much playing time in the NBA and this season he averaged 3.6 points and 1.9 rebounds in 35 games of the regular season. He has also played for Paris and BC Kyiv. Next candidate is another ukrainian center, Kyrylo Fesenko(2.16-C) of the Utah Jazz. Fesenko spend some time in the NBDL with the Utah Flash and then returned to the Jazz for 9 games.

Last but not least is DJ Mbenga(2.14-C). MBenga comes from Congo but he also has a belgian passport. He played for Golden State and LA last season. He is a dominating presence defending the paint and has uncanny flexibility for a player of his size. Last season he averaged 2.5 points and 1.6 rebounds in 26 games with the Lakers.

The Cavs are expected to have Ronald Dupree in camp. The 6-7 small forward has spent parts of five seasons with Detroit, Chicago and Minnesota. He's 27 and in 154 NBA games, he's averaged 3.6 points. He has a decent chance to grab one of the 15 roster spots.
