With the season so near, it's time to look at the impact players at each position on the basketball court. That's exactly what HOOPSWORLD will be doing this week – looking into our ever-so-powerful crystal ball to see which players at which positions will have the greatest impact on their teams (both on the court and on fantasy island). Today, it's the point guards' turn.

First, though, something worth mentioning: point guards aren't what they used to be. There's been a movement in the NBA towards point guard play that emphasizes the lead guard's ability to not only set the table for those around him, but to also score when asked to. Although the "pure point guard" still exists, most on this list are the "pure point guard" plus so much more. The bottom line for a point guard, though, is to lead his team to bring victories to his squad. With that out of the way, on to the rankings ..

6. Chauncey Billups – Detroit Pistons:When the Detroit Pistons put Chauncey Billups on the block this summer, plenty of squads had interest in him, but the Pistons couldn't find a package to their liking. Since signing a big contract, Billups has lost some of the luster on the "Mr. Big Shot" reputation he developed, but there's no doubt that the team has seen tremendous success under his steady leadership. Despite supposedly declining abilities, Billups still averaged 17.0 points and 6.8 assists per game last season and shot .448 from the field and is poised for another steady year with basically the same numbers.

Spurs Find Their Man?:It hasn't exactly been a stellar summer for the San Antonio Spurs. Re-signing Kurt Thomas and signing Roger Mason, Jr. were their big moves, and while those are nice pieces of business to get done, they aren't the moves that keeps them in the chase for the NBA championship. While teams like Houston, New Orleans can expect to be better in 2008-09, the Spurs have yet to make the move that keeps them in elite company, and their latest roster move won't change that.

Today the Spurs have come to terms with free agent guard Salim Stoudamire, cousin of former Spur Damon Stoudamire and former Atlanta Hawk. The Arizona Daily Star is calling him the piece that replaces Robert Horry, but the 6'1, 175 lb Stoudamire is hardly up to the standard that Horry set during his tenure in the NBA. Stoudamire had a decent rookie season for Atlanta, averaging 9.7 points per game, but has fallen off in each of the past two seasons. He managed just 5.7 points per game while shooting 36% from the field last season. His minutes dropped off and the Hawks eventually let him fly.

It's good to know the Spurs are still looking to improve, but they need to ramp up their efforts if they're going to stay in the elite company they've been keeping since Tim Duncan came into the league a decade ago.

Rockets Seeking a Point Guard:To finish off our subject for today, it's fitting that the Houston Rockets are connected to talks about a point guard. It's not a trade situation and it's not going to happen, so this doesn't really belong in the main discussion, but it's interesting to know where the Rockets are looking to fill holes.

The Rockets have recently been speaking with TAU Ceramica about point guard Pablo Prigioni, who is a friend of Luis Scola's. Prigioni was named the Spanish league's top point guard a season ago and is known as a premier defender and passer. But talks fell short of allowing the Rockets to acquire him for the 2008-09 season.

Until this summer the Rockets were very high on Aaron Brooks, and felt he would be the heir apparent to Rafer Alston, but a poor showing in summer league led Houston to begin thinking they should add some insurance to the point guard position. Don't expect them to make a major trade to acquire a point guard, but they will come up from time to time in talks that could add another playmaker to the roster.

The Suns have officially completed their quest for a backup point guard, finally signing second-round draft pick Goran Dragic to a three-year contract, after his buyout was completed Monday.

Phoenix, which has been seeking a true backup playmaker for 34-year old Steve Nash for his entire tenure with the Suns, landed what it hopes to be the successor to the two-time MVP.

Dragic, a 22-year-old southpaw from Slovenia, averaged 11.3 points, 3.4 assists and 1.5 steals a game for Union Olimpija Ljubljana of the Adriatic League. His Slovenian team, which was one of the 25 teams good enough to qualify for the Euroleague, posted a 5-9 record against Europe’s best clubs.

Okafor Back at Center: Charlotte Bobcats big man Emeka Okafor likes playing power forward. He preferred in college and came into the league wanting to be a power forward. Unfortunately for him his lack of lateral quickness against other power forwards who can run and play inside/outside got him moved to the center position. If he was thinking something different under new coach Larry Brown, he might have another think coming. Brown reportedly, according to the Charlotte Observer, would like to put Okafor at center, just like Sam Vincent and Bernie Bickerstaff before him.

Now, this decision has a few different elements and ramifications. The first is in Brown's system there isn't too much difference between the four and five, so while Okafor may be listed on the starting lineup as a five, that doesn't mean he will play differently than he would as a four. The second issue is what this means for center Nazr Mohammed. He played well starting at center both with and without Okafor last season and is coming into camp hoping to build on that by staying in the starting lineup. Mohammed isn't a great player, but he is a decent rebounder, defender, and pretty good scorer when given chances in the post (but, not too many chances considering the quality of scorers like Jason Richardson, Gerald Wallace and Raymond Felton). If Mohammed is coming off the bench behind Okafor, his minutes will probably be limited to 15 a game, barring injuries and foul trouble.

The third issue is then who starts at the four? Gerald Wallace posted minutes there before (as well as his natural position of small forward and at the shooting guard spot), but the team feels that banging with big men might have something to do with his past injury troubles. This leaves sophomore Jermareo Davidson – who looked decent in summer ball but has little offensive game to speak of – and the oft-injured Sean May. If May is healthy he should absolutely be the starter, but the question about him is, as always, how long will he stay in the lineup? Okafor is going to have to resolve his issue with a preference of playing the four, because this team's best lineup is with him and May starting in the frontcourt – and May can't be a center.

Did Cuban Go Too Far? According to the Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard has already apologized for the national anthem issue, they are all on the same page, and as far as they are concerned it's a closed issue. In fact, it's been a closed issue since before the media got ahold of it. However, on his very popular blog, www.blogmaverick.com, Cuban had originally posted some of the very inflammatory emails he had received from the general public along with their email addresses. The idea was people could then respond to these emails directly. These emails included racist comments on Howard and suggestions on what the Mavs should do.

Cuban later pulled the post, saying it was "the right thing to do" in posting it originally, but that the results of it made him a little nauseous. "I thought it was important to point out the hatred and ignorance of so many who quickly judge people they have never met, based purely on soundbites and headlines," Cuban wrote late Friday. "I wanted to point out the irony of them experiencing the onslaught of attention from suddenly and unexpectedly being placed in the media spotlight from a throwaway comment."

I see Cuban's point. Heck, being a member of the media with my own email address out there as public record, I can understand the thinking. Would I have done that? No, I would not, but people sometimes don't think about the fact emails can very easily become public. They are acceptable as evidence in a court of law and unless they come with a legal statement saying they are confidential, can become public. The Mavericks have now addressed this issue internally and externally, so we can all move on.

Milestones to Watch for in 2008-09: There are quite a few active players who could break into some heady company in the upcoming NBA season. Here's a quick rundown of milestones to watch for:

Points: If Shaquille O'Neal scores a modest 1,500 points this season he will move into fifth place all time, between Wilt Chamberlain and Moses Malone (not including ABA stats). Allen Iverson will likely move up to 16th place from 20th. With 2,000 points Kobe Bryant should move from 24th to possibly 16th, depending on how much Iverson scores. Ray Allen needs 1,773 to get to 20,000 for his career. Jason Kidd, Rasheed Wallace and Antawn Jamison all need less than a thousand points to get to the 15,000 point plateau. Rebounds: Shaquille O'Neal (currently 20th all-time) is 67 boards from 12,000, Kevin Garnett is 803. Tim Duncan is 254 from 10,000 and Ben Wallace is 96 from 9,000. Lorenzen Wright is 82 from 5,000, Grant Hill is 239, and Paul Pierce, Tracy McGrady and Kobe Bryant all have an shot at that same plateau.

Steals: Iverson (13th all-time) needs 124 steals to get to 2,000 for his career. Kevin Garnett needs 118 to get to 1,500. Tracy McGrady, Grant Hill, Jason Terry and Larry Hughes each need 34 or less to get to 1,000. Blocks: Tim Duncan (currently 15th all-time) needs eight blocks to get to 2,000 for his career. Ben Wallace needs 127 and Marcus Camby 138.

No Moving Zach Randolph: The Memphis Grizzlies have passed on the chance to obtain Zach Randolph, and so have several other teams. The team that was getting a lot of buzz this weekend was the Golden State Warriors, who according to Warriors sources never had any talks of substance involving Zach. Warriors' sources pointed to the bloated three years and $48 million left on Zach's deal as the killer, saying that the team has spent enough money this season, and that trading off an ending deal like Al Harrington (one guaranteed year at $9 million and a player option for $10 million) was not in the picture. The reality for the Knicks is while Randolph does have some trade value because he's a legit double-double guy; the Knicks are not finding anyone with real interest in a framework that works for them. The Knicks do have eyes on 2010, not just for the shot at LeBron James but for the chance to rebuild the bulk of the team around Mike D'Antoni. Knicks' sources laugh off the idea that LeBron James could be had in a straight up free agent deal, saying there is no way LeBron leaves Cleveland without a sign and trade, but admitted that having flexibility and cap space is the key to even being considered. The other aspect of the race for LeBron would be having some items to return to Cleveland, hence why the Knicks are reluctant to part with any future draft picks in any deal. League sources continue to doubt that LeBron leaves Cleveland, something we here at HOOPSWORLD have been saying for months. But the idea that the Knicks are stockpiling for 2010 seems to have more to with a total remodel than signing a super star. So for the time being, Zach Randolph will open training camp with the Knicks, whether Donnie Walsh can find a taker as the season progresses has a lot to do with early injuries and teams finding out how free agency and the draft impacts their play.

Welcome Rudy : So get this, how important do the Blazers fans feel Rudy Fernandez is to Portland? The Oregeonian is reporting on Jason Quick's blog that Rudy is scheduled to land at Portland International Airport on Monday at 11:55 a.m PST, and are encouraging and advising "fans interested in greeting Fernandez should congregate at PDX's International Meet and Greet area, which is located at the north end of the baggage claim by carousel No. 10." Another interesting note is apparently this flight is routinely as much as 45 minutes early, so get there early. Is this not funny? I am I the only one giggling?

The Grizz Wanted Sun?: So Mitch Kupchak in a Q&A with Lakers.com this past week, basically admitted he was surprised to land Pau Gasol for the pittance he cost the Lakers at the trade deadline. One aspect of the discussion that's gotten Laker fans excited is the mention that the Memphis Grizzlies wanted both Marc Gasol and Sun Yue, which is being spun to somehow justify or establish value to Sun as a player. Are we really getting excited because Memphis wanted him? No disrespect to the Grizzlies, but seriously, it's not like a lot of thought went into the Pau deal, it was about getting as much value in return that would yield the most cap flexibility going forward, picking up Marc Gasol and or Sun Yue was about getting future assets. Memphis GM Chris Wallace has been pretty smart about collecting assets. Portland has shown the entire league what having assets can do for your franchise, especially if you are trying to rebuild with an eye towards the future. The Lakers may or may not have landed a nice player in Sun Yue. Sun was OK in summer league play, but in all honesty, he may not be much of an impact player at this level. The Lakers will give him his shot to earn a role in training camp and pre-season which gets underway next week, but history has shown that Phil Jackson does not put much faith in first year players, and the Lakers are a team ready to compete today. Sun Yue may simply be the guy the fans cheer for when he gets garbage minutes at the end of the blowouts. But coming into to camp, let's not get too excited; after all the Grizzlies are hardly the bar to measure greatness against. Now you tell me the Spurs were calling about Sun Yue, you might see more excitement.

Sacramento Kings forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim announced his retirement Monday, bringing to a close a career that spanned 12 seasons with four different clubs. The 31-year-old Abdur-Rahim has been battling through injury problems in his right knee, which forced him to miss almost all of last season. He underwent a pair of surgeries on the knee last year, including a season-ending operation to remove bone spurs and joint lining last December.

Rehabilitation went slower than expected and, with the NBA's preseason just around the corner, Abdur-Rahim decided he wouldn't be able to fully recover. "I've been in a situation where I've been trying to get healthy over the last year-and-a-half," he said. "I came to grips with the fact that, health-wise, I won't be able to get back to the condition and level that is needed to play in the NBA. My right knee has become arthritic over the years and is to the point where it won't allow me to do the things and play at the level in which I'm accustomed to playing. As tough as it is to come to grips with, it's the reality." Abdur-Rahim's production had dwindled in recent years after achieving stardom early in his career. After being drafted third overall by the Vancouver Grizzlies out of California in 1996, he quickly became the Grizzlies' best player, averaging 20.8 points over his five seasons in Vancouver.

While with the Grizzlies, he was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team that brought home the gold medal in 2000 in Sydney, Australia. He was an All-Star selection in 2002 with the Atlanta Hawks, for whom he played for 2 1/2 seasons before being dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers. Prior to the 2005 campaign, Abdur-Rahim signed a free agent deal with the Kings. Two seasons ago, he fell to a career-low 9.9 points per game in 80 contests with the Kings. Surgery on his right knee limited him to just six appearances last season, when he played in a total of just 51 minutes. "It is unfortunate for any productive career to be felled by injury," Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie said. "However, no one can ever doubt Shareef's effort, commitment or desire to excel. It is our intention to find a new role for Shareef with the organization as he begins the next phase of his professional life."

The Washington Wizards picked up the option on head coach Eddie Jordan on Monday, keeping the veteran under contract through the 2009-10 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Jordan has been with the Wizards for the last five seasons, leading them to the playoffs in each of the last four. The club went 43-39 last year while fighting through injures to star guard Gilbert Arenas and forward Caron Butler, losing in the first round of the playoffs for the third consecutive year to the Cleveland Cavaliers. "Eddie has done an outstanding job and has been instrumental in making us a perennial playoff team, so we are pleased to reward that success by picking up the option on his contract," Wizards team president Ernie Grunfeld said. "We are very excited about the upcoming season and feel that this team is ready to progress to another level under Eddie's leadership."

Jordan's career coaching record is 229-278, including a 97-game stint at the helm of the Sacramento Kings from1997-98. Now entering his sixth year guiding the Wizards, Jordan is the third-longest tenured head coach in the NBA, behind only Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan (20 seasons) and the San Antonio Spurs' Gregg Popovich (12). Jordan's stint in Washington began in rough fashion, as the team struggled to a 25-57 mark in 2003-04. However, he guided the Wizards to the Eastern Conference semifinals one season later. They have finished at .500 or better in each of the last four years.

The Washington Wizards on Monday signed free-agent forward DerMarr Johnson. Terms of the contracts were not released.

The 6-9, 210-pound Johnson is a seven-year veteran who has averaged 6.2 points and 2.2 rebounds in 136 games with Atlanta, New York, Denver and San Antonio. Johnson was selected by Atlanta with the sixth overall pick in the 2000 draft. He averaged 8.4 points and 3.4 rebounds for the Hawks in 2001-02, but missed the entire 2002-03 season after suffering four cracked vertebra in his neck following a car accident. The Wizards also signed forwards Linton Johnson and Taj McCullough on Monday.

Linton Johnson has career averages of 4.1 points and 3.4 rebounds in 141 games. The 6-8, 205-pounder averaged 2.6 points and 1.8 rebounds last season in eight games between Toronto and Phoenix. The 6-7, 227-pound McCullough averaged 2.2 points and 2.0 rebounds in five games with the Wizards' entry in the 2008 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. "DerMarr's experience and versatility, Linton's athleticism and defensive ability and Taj's play with our summer league team gives them a chance to compete for a roster spot," Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said.

Syracuse guard Eric Devendorf has been given an additional year of athletic eligibility, the school announced Monday. Devendorf, a key member of the basketball team who missed 25 of the Orange's 35 games last season with a knee injury, has been granted a hardship waiver by the Big East Conference.

The school applied on Devendorf's behalf after he suffered a torn ACL in a game last December against East Tennessee State and missed the rest of the season. Devendorf started the first 10 games last season and averaged 17 points a game.

He also was a regular contributor during his freshman and sophomore years with the program and has accumulated 1,115 career points. For the 2008-09 season, Devendorf will be classified as a senior academically and a junior in athletic eligibility.

While NBA clubs gear up for the start of another training camp, disgraced referee Tim Donaghy is scheduled to begin serving a 15-month sentence Tuesday at a minimum-security federal prison camp in Pensacola, Fla. Donaghy, a veteran of 13 NBA seasons, created a public-relations nightmare for the league when he pleaded guilty last year to felony gambling charges. Two other gamblers who attended a Philadelphia-area high school with Donaghy -- James "Baba" Battista and Thomas Martino -- also pleaded guilty in the tips-for-payoffs gambling scheme. Battista was sentenced to 15 months; Martino to a year. Over the past year, NBA commissioner David Stern has cast Donaghy -- 41 and a divorced father of four young girls -- as a "rogue, isolated criminal" solely responsible for the betting scandal that threatened the credibility of the league and its referees. No other refs have been charged, nor has the league publicly announced disciplinary action against any others. Donaghy, though, has continued to try to divert the spotlight back to the league's officiating culture. And amid his allegations, the NBA is still awaiting the results of an independent review of its officiating programs -- the so-called Pedowitz Report, named after former federal prosecutor Lawrence Pedowitz, whom the league commissioned to conduct the study. From Washington, a congressional committee is keeping a watchful eye on developments.

At the height of the NBA Finals in June between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, Donaghy's attorney, John Lauro, ignited a firestorm with court filings that alleged "top executives of the NBA sought to manipulate games using referees to boost ticket sales and television ratings." Donaghy's attorney described a culture that allegedly discouraged referees from calling technical fouls on star players, and further insisting that many referees carry on "relationships" with team executives, coaches, and players that violate their NBA contracts. In pleading guilty last year, Donaghy told the judge: "By having this nonpublic information, I was in a unique position to predict the outcome of NBA games." Although the information is incomplete, investigators suggest Donaghy proved successful at picking winners a staggering 80 percent of the time. Sources said the FBI, which discovered and alerted the NBA to the gambling scheme, found Donaghy's information credible, though it didn't lead to indictments against additional refs or anyone else affiliated with the league. Stern has dismissed Donaghy's allegations as "baseless," suggesting that in making them, Donaghy was trying to lighten his prison sentence. Presumably, the league is banking on the Pedowitz Report to confirm the point that Donaghy was a lone operator and that no other officials engaged in criminal activity or compromised the league's credibility. League sources told ESPN.com that Pedowitz is expected to make public his report before the Oct. 28 start of the regular season, perhaps within the next two weeks. Pedowitz did not return a call seeking comment.

When Donaghy was sentenced in late July, Pedowitz said he would require additional time to gather information before publicly releasing his findings or recommendations. Pedowitz is reported to have interviewed every current league referee, though Donaghy himself has declined requests to speak with him. So far, Donaghy has raised allegations against the league only in court filings, and it remains unclear when, or even if, he plans to come forward with additional details. Already strapped for cash, facing legal fees and out of a job, Donaghy is said to be fearful of possible retribution from the league if he enters further into a war of words with the NBA. One place where he might be able to tell his story with a possible grant of immunity is in front of Congress, though Washington lawmakers have been criticized recently for delving too deeply into the sports arena at the expense of weightier issues -- including, now, a frightening financial crisis. Nothing concerning the Donaghy situation is scheduled before the 110th Congress adjourns Friday to allow its members to campaign for reelection. Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., has warned Stern in two separate letters that the situation is on his radar. In a statement released to ESPN.com on Monday, however, Rush said that the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection currently does not plan to call hearings. "We continue to monitor developments and to review oversight and enforcement measures the NBA has put in place to ensure that the integrity of the sport is not undermined by referees or others in authority associated with this premiere sport," said Rush, the subcommittee chairman. "Our subcommittee has no plans to hold a hearing on this matter this year, but I retain my right to raise questions or to request information from Commissioner Stern, and others, as circumstances warrant. Our monitoring of this situation continues to be ongoing whether or not Congress is in session."

The Washington Wizards picked up a one-year option for coach Eddie Jordan on Monday, keeping him under contract through the 2009-10 season.

Jordan is the Wizards' most successful coach since the 1980s, leading the team to four consecutive playoff appearances. He is the Eastern Conference's longest tenured coach and is third in the NBA behind Jerry Sloan of the Utah Jazz and Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs."Eddie has done an outstanding job and has been instrumental in making us a perennial playoff team," team president Ernie Grunfeld said.

Jordan's record over five Wizards seasons is 196-214, but that includes a rebuilding 25-57 mark in his first year. Since then, he is 171-157. A Washington, D.C., native, Jordan is entering the second season of a three-year, $12 million extension. The team held an option for the third year.
