Will VY Step Up?

Post#1 » by Zihuatanejo » Mon Aug 25, 2008 2:19 am

It's been a few years with no real signs of any improvement.

If he steps up this year, we have a good chance to make some noise in our division.

But the question remains, will it even happen?
I don't want to work, I want to bang on the drum all day.

This needs to be the year that VY should step up. From his last game against the Falcons, he still needs to better his throwin mechanics if he wants to better himself as an efficient QB. He also needs to stop takin unneccessary risks throwin the ball into coverage b/c ITs' will happen at the wrong time.

He's going to have problems even if he develops in the mental side of the game. His mechanics are flawed. I thought it'd be fine going in to the first season because of his height, and his ability to the run the ball, but seeing the results of the past 2 seasons, it hasn't been. His release point is too low, and he seems to have a slight tendency to throw off his back foot which, combined, makes for throws that are drastically off-target.

Last season, he made an effort to run less and look for passes more, and although that contributed to his higher percentages, ratings and raw statistics, it also meant less rushing yards, and more importantly, less yards per play overall for the offense, and less worrying by opposing defenses for tracking him down in the open field and spying him.

Hopefully, this season with Mike Heimerdinger means that Vince Young will improve on his passing skills by leaps and bounds. Mike Heimerdinger knows how to work with scrambling quarterbacks, as evidenced by his work with Steve McNair, and hopefully he can do the same with Vince Young. (Although I hope Mike Heimerdinger isn't the one that turned McNair in to captain checkdown, because I fear that's what might happen to Vince - going to his checkdown options instead of taking it down the field)

I saw something like that happenin on one play. I think it was a 3rd down play where VY could've taken the ball down the field to gain yards. However VY decided to throw the ball down the field and came up short. I think that VY wanted to show that he was willing to commit to the aerial game than just be know for running the ball in that instance.

That's what I'm getting worried about. It's good that he's trying to develop on the passing side of his game, but it shouldn't be at the detriment to the team. By not taking these open routes, he's only reducing the chances of the Titans moving the ball down the field.
If he really wants to improve on his passing game, he should focus more on his flawed mechanics (primarily footwork)

No question. I just hope that VY10 can keep a better confidence about himself and will continue to work on his improvements on the field.

Coach Fisher Wed practicing report

(On how Vince Young is doing)

He came in this morning, he’s excited to get back and start treatment and get back in the building with his teammates. He interacted well with his teammates and he’s going to work very hard to rehab and get back on the field as quickly as he can.

(On if there were any misunderstandings about what’s happened with Vince Young over the past 48 hours)

I think we’ve made releases, we’ve spoke openly about it and we’re going to move on. As I said, there was a misunderstanding. I think the organization acted appropriately, obviously because we’re concerned for all of our employees. When it was resolved, it was resolved.

(On if he would have handled the situation any differently if the player in question was not Vince Young)

I’m not treating any player any differently, so the answer is yes. I’d do that for any employee considering the information I had and now I’m going to talk about the upcoming game.

the problem is Fisher never wanted Vince Young here. If your coach doesn't believe in you you will never make it in the NFL. It took the Giants 4 years to believe in Eli Manning. They believed in Eli and acquired a top 3 reciever via free agency, Placcico Burress, kept Toomer there a former 1st rounder and drafted Steve Smith and Moss first rounds and Shockey first round to show that commitment to Eli Manning. They trusted so much in Eli that Tiki Barber couldn't understand why he wasn't getting so much touchs in the 2nd half of games. And it didn't work until Tiki and Shockey left and the offense was fully in the hands of Eli. Take note. People wanted Eli out for years. He still looks lost at times. But the Giants still play to win and attack. You can tell they're trying to score TD to WIN THE DAMN GAME. Not kill the clock or play field position. With defenses as good as the Titans and Jaguars I don't understand how the offense is so conservative. That's when you should take chances and attack on offense when your defense is so good.

Who has the Titans drafted for him? They keep drafting running backs to keep the ball away from Vince.

If I'm Vince I demand to be traded to a team that will show they believe in me and draft to help me. When that happens, they'll trust him and get him involved in the offense.

IMO, VY10 came into the fire well to soon with McNair gettin pushed out the door. He could've used McNair's insights and experience of the game as a QB to work his way of becoming a smart and successful QB. Now Vince has to relearn some of the insights as a QB from Kerry Collins and understand how to operate more efficiently as a QB.
