Small forward Hedo Turkoglu was the last Magic player to return to Orlando and reunite with teammates after the offseason, arriving Monday night from his native Turkey. Turk hopes this won't be his last summer with the town and the team he adores. He said Tuesday that he likely will opt out of his contract after the season to become a free agent, signaling the end of his six-year, $39-million deal with the Magic.

He could play out his final season in 2009-10 at $7.3 million. But he seemingly has gained enough leverage and equity after earning the NBA's most improved player award last season. He turns 30 next March, meaning this is likely his last shot at a lucrative long-term contract."It does make sense (to opt out), actually," Turkoglu said, adding with a laugh, "I'd be one year younger."I would love to stay in Orlando . . . but this is a business. My business is to play my game. If you don't play your game, you can't get a deal anywhere. Hopefully, Orlando will agree and we will sign, but we'll wait and see. It's hard to tell if I'm staying or leaving."

Magic General Manager Otis Smith said the club "would like to keep Turk" and expects to have several conversations before the February trade deadline with Lon Babby, Turkoglu's agent. "It's a conversation we have to have as opposed to allowing him to become free," Smith said. "We should have a pretty good idea."

• Agent Jason Levien said former Gators 6-6 forward Matt Walsh, who appeared in two games for Miami in 2005 and played in Europe the past two years, agreed to a one-year deal with Miami. . . . Heat coach Erik Spoelstra predicts power forward Joel Anthony will ``surprise people.''.

JCF: Well, the first question is pretty obvious: What's the latest on the unsigned guys like Joey Dorsey and Carl Landry?: DM: Joey is close to signing. By the end of the week, we should have that finished. We're looking forward to having him join. It will likely be a long-term deal that keeps him here for a good stretch. With Carl, we have a fair offer out there and we're hoping he takes it.

JCF: And how about Dikembe?: DM: Yeah, no update on Dikembe right now.

JCF: What's the latest with Maarty Leunen?:DM: Maarty's going to sign in Turkey with a team associated with Efes Pilsen. It will be a good situation for him; he'll be playing good competition and it will help him develop overseas. And just like all our recent international players, if it looks like they're going to be ready, all of them are available to come over the next offseason. JCF: Have you got your training camp roster finalized yet?: DM: We're still evaluating who's definitely going to be here. I think some folks who are likely coming in and competing for a spot are Von Wafer and Marcus Campbell. Those two are going to be fighting for a spot on the team.

Denver Nuggets guard Chucky Atkins will miss six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Wednesday.

Atkins felt pain two weeks ago while playing pickup games, and an MRI on Monday revealed an operation was necessary. Team orthopedic surgeon Steve Traina repaired torn cartilage and cleaned out loose bodies, the team said.

Atkins missed most of last season after surgery to repair a sports hernia. He averaged 4.7 points and two assists in 24 games.

For Heat rookies Michael Beasley and Mario Chalmers, the joy of getting drafted and settling into their new homes in Miami has long been forgotten. Getting into trouble with the NBA before their first seasons even started took care of that.Answering questions for the first time about the Sept. 3 incident at an NBA symposium for all incoming first-year players, the two Heat rookies reiterated Wednesday that they made a mistake by being in a "wrong-place, wrong-time type thing," Beasley said. "It's a situation that's over and done with," Chalmers said before an informal workout at the team's arena. "We put it behind us."

Chalmers and former Kansas teammate Darrell Arthur were sent home from the event and fined $20,000, after security at the resort where the four-day session was taking place found the players in a room with two women, and security officials detected the scent of marijuana. No drugs or drug paraphernalia were found, but even having guests in the room broke NBA policies, and the two rookies were banished by commissioner David Stern. Later, it was learned that Beasley was also in the room, which he originally tried to hide from NBA officials. For not being forthcoming, he was fined $50,000. Neither player offered specifics Wednesday on exactly what went on in that hotel room, but the team's biggest star said Wednesday that within the locker room, it's already been forgotten. "I'm not worried about it," Heat guard Dwyane Wade told The Associated Press. "I think it could carry over, but from being around them the last few nights, I can see that they're not going to be a problem. Mario knows he has an opportunity to compete for a starting spot. Beasley knows the same thing. They have an unbelievable opportunity in this league, and they need to understand the culture of the Heat and how we do things. They didn't have that this summer."

The matter was discussed in a team meeting, and the rookies have explained to some veterans their side of the incident. "They support me more than I do myself," Beasley said. "I mean, they just showed that they've got support. They don't look at us no different." It's been a rocky few months since draft night for Beasley. He's already fired an agent, went through long negotiations before signing his first major endorsement deal -- he got a contract from adidas on Wednesday -- and now has to deal with the stigma of being involved in this incident. "I would say that's where my immaturity played a factor," Beasley said. "I'm 19, so I kind of tried to be a kid and get away with it. ... But it was kind of eating away at me, just to watch my teammate go through so much and be basically hiding behind the lights. I just felt it was the right thing for my team, and just to stand by my teammate."

The Nuggets haven't had a player from a Denver area high school on the roster since trading Chauncey Billups in February 2000. Nick Fazekas would like to change that.

Fazekas, a 2003 Ralston Valley High School graduate, said Tuesday he will sign a nonguaranteed contract with the Nuggets before the start of next week's training camp. The 6-foot-11 forward said he had "lots" of camp offers but believes he can make the Nuggets, who recently lost big men Marcus Camby and Eduardo Najera. "I'm confident I can," said Fazekas, who will sign for the $711,517 minimum after averaging 4.1 points in 26 games last season as a rookie with Dallas and the Clippers. "I don't want it to sound like I'm talking with an ego, but I feel I'm good enough to play in the NBA." If Fazekas, who worked out at the Pepsi Center on Tuesday for a second straight day after having recent workouts with Cleveland, Dallas, Oklahoma City and San Antonio, doesn't bring local flavor to the Nuggets, forward Michael Ruffin could. Ruffin, who also has been working out at the Pepsi Center, expects to attend training camp with Denver or Chicago. "I'll know in the next few days," said Ruffin, a 1995 Cherry Creek High School graduate who played last season with Milwaukee and has a 1.8 average in eight NBA seasons. "I'll talk to my agent (Andy Miller) and talk to (Denver) coaches and try to get an idea about them keeping a 14th player."

The cost-cutting Nuggets might begin the season with the minimum of 13 players. But word now is a 14th could be kept, especially if a young prospect such as Fazekas shows promise. While Fazekas said it would be "unique" playing for his hometown team, he'll get paid this season regardless. Dallas, which waived him in February after signing him to a two-year guaranteed deal, owes him $711,517.

The AP reports: The Suns’ newest player, Goran Dragic, has molded his game after Spurs point guard Tony Parker. “I’m like, how do you say, a little version of Tony Parker,” Dragic said with a chuckle. “But I must work hard to be as good as he is.” Fans of the purple and orange might cringe at the very mention of the Suns’ nemesis, who has helped the Spurs oust Phoenix from the playoffs four times in the last five years. But coach Terry Porter, who teamed with Parker in San Antonio in 2001-02, relished the comparison.

HARRISON OVERSEAS? Free-agent center David Harrison, a former University of Colorado player, will work out today with Minnesota. Harrison, who said he's not a candidate to attend the Nuggets' camp, recently had workouts with Chicago and San Antonio.

If Harrison isn't offered guaranteed money, he said he will head overseas. Agent Chris Emens said he has multiple offers from Europe and Asia. "Maybe this will end up helping me," Harrison said of his struggle to find NBA work after four erratic seasons with the Pacers. "I came into the NBA with a chip on my shoulder."

Meanwhile, Richard Roby, undrafted in June out of CU, has signed a one-year deal with Israel's Bnei Hasharon. Emens, also Roby's agent, said Roby's NBA chances were hindered last summer by a broken hand and he'll give it another shot next year.

One of things turned out to be former Maryland star and former Wizards guard Juan Dixon, who signed a contract yesterday afternoon. The partially guaranteed one-year deal is for $1.03 million, the veterans' minimum for a player with Dixon's experience.

Dixon, a Baltimore native, has averaged 8.9 points on 41.4 percent shooting in 386 career games and is deeply familiar with Jordan's system because he spent three seasons with the Wizards after he was selected in the second round of the 2001 draft. "He's someone I'm very comfortable with," Jordan said. "He's a guy who scored 35 points in a playoff game for us to help us win a series against the Chicago Bulls [in the first round of the 2005 playoffs] and he's a tough, hard-nosed guy who likes to compete."

Dixon also fits into the team's financial needs. The team had limited space remaining underneath the luxury tax threshold of $71.15 million. Both Dixon and Brown have partially guaranteed deals and the team also signed small forwards DerMarr Johnson and Linton Johnson and power forward Taj McCullough to training camp contracts, so those five will compete for roster spots. "It makes for more of a competitive situation," Grunfeld said. "It's going to be up to the players who can play the best, fit in the best and those will be the guys we take with us."

WEEMS MENDING: Nuggets athletic trainer Jim Gillen said rookie Sonny Weems, who underwent sports hernia surgery July 31, will be limited when camp starts Tuesday but it won't be long before he's back to full strength.

Weems injured his groin 1 1/2 years ago. But the injury wasn't properly diagnosed until last summer. "It's feeling good, but I haven't done any explosive jumping or full-speed running," Weems said.

Weems signed last week, calling it a three-year contract with the first year guaranteed for the minimum of $442,114. Three years at the minimum would make the deal worth $2 million.

Apart from Arenas, who expects to return in December or January, the Wizards will enter training camp with a healthy roster.

Wizards Note: Via a text message, Arenas said he is feeling "much better" than he was before the latest surgical procedure and is looking forward to getting into the rehabilitation process. Arenas will be in Richmond for training camp.

Vince Carter looks absolutely unimpeded from the ankle that required surgery; Sean WilliamsSean Williams for the time being is being told to concentrate on what he does best (as opposed to working on weaknesses) to be a contributor; Brook Lopez eventually will be a significant contributor but like the team he is a work in progress and figures to struggle early (“I would imagine by halfway through the season he’ll start to figure out ways to be successful in this league,” Vandeweghe said); the development of the kids really is the key to the whole plan.

Denver Nuggets guard Chucky Atkins underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today. The surgery, performed by Nuggets orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Steve Traina, repaired torn cartilage and cleaned out loose bodies.

Atkins began experiencing discomfort in the knee two weeks ago while playing pick-up games in preparation for the season. An MRI was performed on Monday and revealed surgery was necessary.

Atkins will be sidelined for approximately six weeks.

The best-known of the trio is former University of Florida swingman Matt Walsh, who played three games for the Heat in 2005, after going undrafted earlier that year. The 6-foot-6 Walsh has spent the past two seasons in Greece, Spain and Belgium, after tryouts with the Nets and Cavaliers.Walsh and the Heat have verbally agreed on a non-guaranteed deal at the veteran's minimum.

Also working with the team in advance of Saturday's start of training camp at AmericanAirlines Arena have been former Jacksonville State power forward Omar Bartlett and former South Carolina guard Tre Kelley, who won the 2007 Naismith Award as the nation's top 6-foot-or-under collegian and then signed to play this past season in Croatia.

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/six ... rehab.html

First published on the Daily News' new 76ers blog, Sixerville, by Phil Jasner, available at go.philly.com/sixerville. The 76ers have confirmed that Jason Smith is out for the entire season.

But, truthfully, didn't we already know that? Isn't that how long it long it takes to fully recover from surgery to reconstruct a torn anterior cruciate ligament in a knee? Smith, the Sixers' second-year big man, underwent the procedure on his left knee last week. Mark Bartelstein, Smith's agent, said at the time that it was far more important to make certain that his client rehabs properly and gives himself the best opportunity to come back as strong as possible, whenever that might be.

And that's still what Bartelstein is saying. "If anything, the surgery went great, the rehab has already started," Bartelstein said. "Nothing has changed [in terms of the degree of injury or time frame for recovery]. Things are getting better every day. It was never a goal for Jason to play this season. The goal was - and is - for him to be 100 percent." Smith, though, will count against the NBA roster maximum of 15. The Sixers, who open training camp Sept. 29 at Penn State, currently have 14 players. *

The Washington Wizards added another piece to the puzzle Tuesday by signing former Maryland Terrapin Juan Dixon to a partially guaranteed contract.

The Wizards, who have little wiggle room under the luxury tax spending cap, weren't offering the guaranteed deal Dixon, who made $2.5 million last season, was seeking. But eventually, Dixon decided returning here was his best option, and management believes he can be a key contributor. "Juan is a proven NBA player, and we like what he brings to our team," team president Ernie Grunfeld said. "He is a tough, hard-nosed competitor who can score, and his familiarity with our system is an added plus."

Dixon will join a backcourt that for the moment includes 11-year veteran point guard Antonio Daniels, eight-year shooting guard DeShawn Stevenson and second-year players Dee Brown and Nick Young.
