1998 Jazz vs. 2008 Jazz

Post#1 » by bsutefan » Tue Sep 16, 2008 10:06 pm

1. How the 1998 Jazz would fare in the 2008 NBA.
2. How the 2008 Jazz would fare in the 1998 NBA.
3. What the outcome would be of a Western Conference Finals Series between the two teams.

Interesting debate, how would they compare in the different eras?

Easy: 1998 in 4.

Malone would embarrass the **** out of Boozer on both ends of the floor and Stock would relitively stop Deron.

1998 Jazz would be fighting the Celtics for the title.
2008 Jazz would probably lose in the 2nd round in 1998, just like this year.
1998 Jazz would beat today's Jazz, 4-1 or 4-2. Boozer would struggle against Tag.
Russell and Horny would murder today's Jazz from the outside. Stockton and Deron would cancel each other out. Malone would go for 40 on Boozer each game. Overall, the 1998 team just seems like a better team. Today's team might even be more talented on paper, but 1998 team was just too good.

Deron would have to do most of the scoring against the 98 team, and with his skillset he would do fine offensively vs. Stock.

98 team would be champions in todays league.

it'a difficult to say, different eras.
I think jazz of 98 were better, but this team is talented and have a lot of weapons and a better bench than that year.

I think the 98 Jazz would win, but according to whatifsports, the 08 Jazz would win.

Just clicked the link. Player of the game = Carlos Boozer?? :dontknow: There goes the credibility of the site!

Here's the skinny: 1998 team was dominant but their age ALWAYS cost them a blowout loss in most series. (Think game 2 in 1997 Finals and game 3 in 1998 Finals).

Today's Jazz would run right past Horny and Stockton offensively, but it wouldnt be enough. I believe it would be a 6 or 7 game series with the 1998 team outlasting our team with flawless execution and overall better defense.....

Wow... I decided to try out a best of 7 on that site. Game five had the '08 team crushing the '98 team 132-89.

Boozer had 25/15, while holding the Mailman to 20/16.
Deron had had 13/11 while holding John to 18/4. John Freaking Stockton with only four assists and 18 points?!?!?

I stopper there. All credibility was gone. Anyone who is old enough to really remember the '98 team knows that they would clobber today's team. I love Deron and Boozer as much as anyone, but there is no way that they could outpace that team by 43 points.

I say that today's team would lose in six. They would be too good at home (I know I know, both teams would technically be at home...) to get swept. I think they split the first four, than the old school squad closes the last two.

Stockton=Dwill - they'd both get theirs, Stockton would edge out in assists and less turnovers
Horny>Brewer - I love Brewer but Horny was a good defender and had a consistent three point shot.
Russell<AK - Ak's better defensively but isn't as reliable on offense
Mailman>Boozer - Malone would make Boozer wish he stayed in Cleveland
Tag<Okur - Ostertag was a damn good defender but I think Okur would destroy him on offense and wouldn't have to waste too much energy guarding him.

I'd also like to see Big Dog face off with Millsap.

You're right, the 98 team was so close to sweeping the Lakers, in fact it only took them 4 games to eliminate them, crazy how close that was too a sweep.
