Cmon Ladies! Pick it up!!! & Next seasons playoff teams

Post#1 » by Snayr » Fri Aug 15, 2008 12:53 am

Alright guys cmon. This is pitiful that the place dies as much as it does come the offseason! We have to keep this thing going year round guys, so stop slacking off :P Anyways, I thought it would kinda cool to see everyones opinions on the upcoming seasons playoff seedings.

East:
Montreal Canadiens
Pittsburgh Penguins
Washington Capitals
Philadelphia Flyers
New York Rangers
Boston Bruins
Carolina Hurricanes
Tampa Bay Lightening

West:
Detroit Red Wings
San Jose Sharks
Calgary Flames
Dallas Stars
Anaheim Ducks
Chicago Blackhawks
Edmonton Oilers
Phoenix Coyotes

So those are my picks... let's see some of yours.

Are those in order, 1-8 best teams, or is that your playoff seeding, or is that just a jumbled list?

Oh the questions I have.

Anyway you slice it, though, I can't say I disagree with much. Even with the overhaul Tampa has done, their lack of defense and a solid goalie has me thinking they'll be on the outside looking in. I'd put Ottawa in over Tampa Bay right now.

Sorry I wasn't exactly clear, it's the overall standings I had going into the 08-09 season playoffs. So yup, those would be my playoff seedings. As for the whole Tampa/Ottawa deal, I wanted to shake things up a bit and am pulling to see Tampa squeak in. I'm banking on the offense really getting them pushing for that last playoff spot. As for Ottawa, I'm not too sold on them and their fragile mental state as a team.

I think the olympics had something to do with this board slacking off, just speculation though.

Now to the picks. Offseason still has some rumblings in it, so I will not make my pick just yet. I mean sundin, J-Bo, McCabe is apparently going to be dealt to florida according to sportsnet.

But how cool is it seeing the blackhawks and bruins back in the playoff mix.

J-Bo isn't headed to Toronto for McCabe. Florida is not that stupid...

As for Sundin, I don't think it has an effect on the placement for the Habs. I see a repeat of last season, and IF Sundin signs then that just further solidifies it. If Sundin goes to the Leafs, they still have no chance of making the playoffs.

Either way you may as well just do it now :P

Oh, no, I didn't mean that, I am not that stupid.... Ha. He is going for Mike Van Ryn apparently. I just meant that there are still deals being made.

My picks for the Western Conference:

Detroit
Dallas
Edmonton
San Jose
Anaheim
Calgary
Chicago
Nashville or Phoenix

PACIFIC: San Jose isn't impressing me as much lately with their moves. Dallas is chugging along with development and acquisition, and I think it's going to pay off this year. I question a couple of their pick-ups this summer, but overall, Dallas is going to be a force in the West for years to come. Phoenix is a tough call: The Great One is taking his time, slowly developing the club and snagging good deals here and there (yanking Bryz off Anaheim's waivers comes to mind). The two main questions here are chemistry and experience, but then, when has Phoenix NOT had those questions. The LA Kings are rebuilding yet more; a playoff run is very unlikely. Moving Lubo to the Oilers certainly didn't help them either. Anaheim will clinch a decent playoff berth, but Burke has left the Ducks with some gaps that I think will prevent a Cup run for them this year. Pronger can't win it all by himself.

NORTHWEST: A hard call: Edmonton's stunning youth development last year with Gagner, Brodziak, Cogliano, Gilbert, and Nilsson has allowed the Oilers to dump overpaid, under-performing Stoll, Torres, and the colicky Joni Pitkanen to make room for the youngsters to step in. But can the netminding threesome of Garon, Roloson, and Deslauriers compete in the Super-Goalie Club of the Northwest? Deslauriers strikes me as a career backup, but then, so did Garon before his incredible run last year. I'm going to play favorites here and say that Edmonton squeaks out with the division title, just because they seem to have found an answer for each rival they will be playing in the NW. Calgary is likely to see a rusty Kipper in the first 3 months, and doubts about chemistry with their acquisitions continue to mount. Vancouver is practically rolling an AHL team in front of an elite goalie. The only constant in the Canucks forward lines are the Sedins. Minnesota has lost several key players, with question marks in the development area. And Colorado? It's seriously time to dump salary and rebuild. Signing Smyth -- a six million dollar paycheck for the playing equivalent of Holmstrom -- is a really bad decision. Grabbing the Leafs' ailing goalie was probably not the best decision either, but it could have been worse -- at least they didn't grab the Senators' problem goalie.

CENTRAL: Detroit is going to be a 10-headed monster this year with Hossa added to the mix. Yikes. Can you say "back to back Cups", boys and girls? The Wings will continue to beat up on their division rivals and pad their points as always. But Chicago is a growing force, and for some reason, Nashville never wants to die off on the ice as quickly as they do on paper. As for the Blues and the Blue Jackets... well... you can look forward to more high draft picks.

"San Jose isn't impressing me as much lately with their moves."

I would expect a flames fan to say that considering we ended their season. Anyway the Sharks biggest move was finally giving Ron Wilson the axe and hiring a young bright mind off Detroit's coaching staff. Boyle and Blake added to the blue line also bring Stanley cup experience with right handed shot's on the point.

Them's fightin' words, pardner. I'm an Oilers man, true blue (and copper). Notice my modifications to the Calgary logo. ;)

The problem with San Jose is they keep looking for big, rough & tough players. Meanwhile, Detroit won the Cup with speed & skill over some much bigger teams, size-wise. There's only so much a team can bulk up its size before that becomes a liability, and I think San Jose hasn't figured that out yet. However, if the lessons from Detroit take hold in San Jose, then you guys should be in good shape.

East-

1. Montreal
2. Philadelphia
3. Washington
4. New Jersey
5. Boston
6. Pittsburgh
7. Ottawa
8. New York

Montreal looks real strong, same with Philly. Im not sold Pittsburgh's offseason, they lost a ton of grit and leadership, and will be missing Whitney and now possibly Gonchar for a extended period. I cant get excited about additions like Satan, Pesonen, Fedotenko, Cooke. They'll have the ol stanley cup finalist hangover, but luckily for them still make the playoffs because of the star power and Fleury. Also not sold on TB seeing there goaltending is shaky and its avery vulnerable defence. Ottawa has a good chance to suprise alot of people with a new coach and ridding some cancers, while adding some much needed leadership/toughness (J Smith, Ruutu, Kuba) but for now i'll keep them near the bottm half until they prove otherwise. Montreal wins the east and most likely makes it to the cup finals.

As a lady, I find this rather offensive :P

Anyways, I'll make my picks at the end of preseason.

Haha, well it was meant to garner attention to get the board more active (and it did) and not meant to be offensive to anybody, I assure you :)

On top of it I wasn't aware that you were a lady crowned :o, learn something new everyday.

I've made 3 posts, and none of them have appeared...strange.

Actually, I'm not a lady. As soon as I made a post stating I was, I suddenly recieved a message on MSN from MAS asking me to dinner. Tonight's draft should be an interesting one.
