Doc gets 20!!!

Post#1 » by halfcourt » Fri Sep 26, 2008 1:45 am

career high in strikeouts, league leader in innnings pitched, filthy ERA of 2.78 good for 2nd in AL. Roy becomes only the third pitcher in baseball to get 20 and funnily enough none of them are headed to the playoffs. Also has 9 complete games including the one today, tied with CC Sabathia. If Cliff Lee wasn't having such a godly season Roy would have been a lock for Cy, i hope he gets a ton of votes for 2nd place instead of stupid picks like Dice-K or K-Rod

Congrats to Doc, he's had an incredible season, but the team just let him down.

Doc is best pitcher in MLB, period.

If not for this piece of crap that JP calls a team, he has about 26 wins and another Cy Young.

Doc's been having a great season its just to bad that K-Rod and Cliff Lee have been having amazing seasons or else Doc would be a lock for the Cy Young.

anyway you look at it, K-Rod has NOT been a better pitcher than Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee has been phenomenal though

K-Rod just destroyed the save record and in the best closer in baseball K-Rods been a better pitcher than Doc this year.

Heh, K-Rod isn't anywhere near to being the best closer in baseball. A comparison:

K-Rod: 2.27 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 10.2 K/9, 2.23:1 K/BB, 67.3 IP, seven blown saves. Good numbers, though his WHIP is league average, which indicates that he has been insanely lucky.

Papelbon: 1.98 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 10 K/9, 10.9:1 K/BB (!), 68.3 IP, five blown saves. With the exception of a very tiny gap in K rate, Papelbon is better in every way imaginable.

Rivera: 1.43 ERA, 0.68 WHIP (!), 9.9 K/9, 12.7:1 K/BB (!?!), 69.3 IP, one blown save. Again, much better; Rivera is (as usual) the best closer in baseball, and there's no contest.

Lidge: 1.87 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 11.9 K/9, 2.62 K/BB, 67.3 IP, zero blown saves (!). Numbers are very close...still better in every category, though.

Nathan: 1.36 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 9.8 K/9, 4:1 K/BB, 66.3 IP, six blown saves. Not even close.

Rodriguez is barely a top-5 closer in baseball, if you set aside the idiocy that is the save statistic. If the Angels scored as many runs as the Yankees, Red Sox, Twins, or Phillies, Rodriguez gets less saves and the "best closer in baseball" thing would be utterly laughable. Conversely, stick any of the above closers on the Angels and they break the save record by a larger margin. As it stands, he's being rewarded by playing on a team that can't blow anyone out.

Pitcher A: 2.27 ERA, 67.1 IP, 54 H, 34 BB, 76 K, 4 HR, 191 ERA+, 1.30 WHIP
Pitcher B: 1.78 ERA, 70.2 IP, 54 H, 27 BB, 57 K, 3 HR, 241 ERA+, 1.15 WHIP

Pitcher A is the "better pitcher than Halladay this year". Pitcher B is Scott Downs.

That's not a typo. Rodriguez hasn't even been as effective as Scott freakin' Downs this season. He's broken the saves record, that's the only reason he's even mentioned this year. Halladay has thrown almost 200 more innings and has a similar ERA (2.78). Halladay destroys him in every category. It's not even a discussion between the two of them.

So while I agree K-Rod may/will get more votes for Cy than Halladay due to the saves record, the fact that anyone can say that he's pitched better than Halladay this year is astonishing (in a bad way). It's not even close.

With that said, Cliff Lee will win it.

wow, k-rod got embarrassingly exposed in this thread, good job Schad and MB for pointing that out.. it's just sad how the media is so blinded by useless stats such as Saves and Wins to determine trophies... and by useless, I do'nt mean you should just toss it out the window, but often times, these types of stats are barely in the pitchers capacity to produce on their own..

yes he is, its a similar case to K-Rod, his record is inflated for whatever reason. He's pitched about 90 innings less than Doc(5 less starts) and has worse ERA and has given up more than twice as many walks as Doc
