Hard to imagine that anyone would claim that Detroit hasn't fully deserved its regular spot in our top five. Frustrated as Pistons fans might be to come away from six consecutive trips to the East finals with only one championship, there's been only one source of positive consistency emanating from the Leastern Conference since Michael Jordan's retirement … and this team is it.

Houston Rockets forward Shane Battier is expected to miss the majority of the team’s preseason schedule due to inflammation in his left foot. The inflammation occurred during his rehabilitation from offseason surgery to remove bone spurs which was performed on May 9. The seven-year veteran is expected to be sidelined for up to four weeks.

Houston Rockets forward Shane Battier will be sidelined up to four weeks and miss most of preseason because of an inflammation in his left foot.

He had surgery May 9 to remove bone spurs from his left ankle, and the team said the foot inflammation occurred during rehabilitation. The Rockets open training camp Tuesday.

The 6-foot-8 forward started 78 games last season and averaged 9.3 points and 5.1 rebounds. He was one of the team's most dependable 3-point shooters, hitting 38 percent.

Detroit Pistons owner William Davidson was recently inducted into the 2008 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and his friends and colleagues at Palace Sports & Entertainment and Guardian Industries utilized a billboard on Interstate 75 near 14 Mile Road in Troy, Michigan to congratulate him for his accomplishment.

Davidson purchased the Pistons in 1974 and has seen his ball club win three NBA Championships and, in addition, his WNBA franchise the Detroit Shock has won two league titles.

Gilbert Arenas ducked out of the Washington Wizards' annual preseason media day Friday, avoiding any discussion of his third left knee operation in 1½ years. A few of his teammates who did speak wondered aloud about when -- and whether -- their All-Star point guard would be back to his Agent Zero self. "I think probably everybody's worried about that. I think Gil's got to be worried about that," center Brendan Haywood said. "It's one of those things. I want to see him bounce back and be the player he was when he averaged 30 points, six assists, and was one of the top five vote-getters in the Eastern Conference. I think he can get back there. The doctors all say he can get back there," Haywood added."But in the back of everybody's mind, you're a little worried: 'What if?' "

What if Arenas takes longer to return than the vague, December-or-January target he wrote about on his blog the day after last week's knee surgery? What if when Arenas does return, it takes a while for him to get into shape? What if when Arenas does get into shape, it takes a while for him to play at his best? "One thing I'm expecting to happen is that when he comes back, we're going to see Gilbert this year, but we probably won't see Agent Zero until the end of the season," forward Antawn Jamison said, "or maybe towards next year."Arenas has yet to answer any questions in front of a group of reporters since announcing his $111 million, six-year contract in July. His first public discussion of his latest surgery was supposed to come Friday, but he was the only Wizards player the media wasn't able to talk to at the team's arena. He did show up long enough to pose for photographs, but the team said Arenas cited his knee rehab work in declining to speak. Instead, a Wizards spokesman said, Arenas will address the media Saturday, when the team opens training camp in Richmond, Va. The Wizards haven't offered any timetable for when Arenas might be able to start practicing or playing. He first had surgery on the left knee in April 2007, then had another operation in November, and appeared in only 13 regular-season games last season.

Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld, coach Eddie Jordan and several players have been optimistic about playing well until Arenas does don a uniform. They made the playoffs last season by relying on All-Star forwards Caron Butler and Jamison, veteran guards DeShawn Stevenson and Antonio Daniels, and Haywood. "We need to go out there and understand that if Gilbert's here, it's a great thing," Stevenson said, "and if not, we're just going to have to work a little bit harder." Whatever worries Arenas' teammates might harbor, they are looking on the positive side. Long as it might take, they figure, certainly the day will come when their enigmatic guard is hitting buzzer-beating 3-pointers, just like in the old days. "Eventually, he's going to be back to normal. I think so," Jamison said. "He's going to do everything possible to make sure he's at that level and healthy." Stevenson has spoken to Arenas about what the future may hold. "We're tight, so obviously, we've talked about it. I know him. I know he's going to work hard. He's not one of them guys who gets his money and goes out the window," Stevenson said. "So you will see a Number Zero jersey back on the court." A reporter pointed out that about half the questions put to Stevenson were about his pal and backcourt mate. Stevenson shrugged, smiled and replied: "Making $111 million, it's going to be like that."

Jamaal Tinsley will remain on the Pacers roster while the team tries to trade him, but the guard won't practice with Indiana when it opens training camp Tuesday. The team will not buy out Tinsley's contract, Pacers president Larry Bird said Friday. "He will stay wherever he's at until we get something done. Jamaal knows that, his agent knows it and we know it," Bird said. "Nothing has changed from what we said at the beginning of the year."We're going to try to get the best deal for us. If it drags on a little bit, then that's what it's got to be." The Pacers made their intentions clear to Tinsley this summer when they removed the nameplate from his locker at Conseco Fieldhouse and sent his belongings to him in Atlanta.

Tinsley has been with the Pacers since before the 2001-02 season, but has been hampered by injuries and off-court legal problems in recent years. He played in just 39 games last season, the fewest in his seven-year NBA career. In March, charges in connection with a bar fight were dropped against Tinsley and teammate Marquis Daniels, who agreed to perform 32 hours of community service. Daniels is still with the Pacers but Tinsley became expendable in a roster shake-up that brought in seven new players over the summer. "Right now we're discussing with some teams and we've been discussing with his agent throughout," Bird said. "And when it comes down to it, I really like Jamaal as a person, I think it's better for us to go in a different direction."

The new players include point guards T.J. Ford, acquired as part of a trade with Toronto for Jermaine O'Neal, and Jarrett Jack, who came as part of a trade with Portland for Ike Diogu. Also, forward Austin Croshere, who was drafted by Bird in the first round in 1997 and spent his first nine seasons with the Pacers, has been invited to training camp. Croshere played for Dallas and Golden State the past two years.

http://www.nba.com/pistons/news/bench_080926.html

The Zoo Crew, as Chauncey Billups spontaneously dubbed the Pistons’ bench after one especially impressive December showing last season, should be an even more popular attraction this time around. Rodney Stuckey and Arron Afflalo have a full season under their belts and appeared much more confident and assured players during their time together in the Las Vegas Summer League. Antonio McDyess, after one season as a starter following three coming off the Pistons’ bench, will return to a reserve role, where his scoring punch will nicely complement a unit that relied mostly on its athleticism to create scoring chances. Whoever winds up taking McDyess’ place in the starting lineup – and Amir Johnson, Jason Maxiell and Kwame Brown all will probably be given opportunities to pair with Rasheed Wallace throughout the preseason – will still leave the bench with three more than capable frontcourt rotation pieces.Beyond those five, the Pistons have a few new faces in rookie Walter Sharpe and free-agent guard Will Bynum and two familiar faces, Walter Herrmann and Cheikh Samb.

It adds up to the deepest and most versatile roster the Pistons have featured since the Wallace trade midway through the 2003-04 season gave them a formidable bench that included Mike James, Lindsey Hunter, Corliss Williamson and Mehmet Okur. “There will be a good balance on our bench,” Pistons vice president Scott Perry said. “When you talk about those younger players, what a difference a year can make. When you talk about a full NBA season, 100-plus games with the preseason and the playoffs, those guys … Rodney played when the playoffs came, Arron played throughout the season. Even just sitting and watching and being around the game is going to help them and give them more confidence coming into the season. When they come off the bench and get the opportunity to play night in and night out, they’re going to be better prepared.” Because the Pistons have so many players capable of playing more than one position, the lineup possibilities are virtually limitless. First-year coach Michael Curry has proclaimed Stuckey a “sixth starter” and said during last week’s Pistons media tour that he would see about 30 minutes a game. Afflalo averaged 13 minutes as a rookie and has drawn effusive praise from Curry. Their increased roles mean Rip Hamilton might spend as much as a third of his minutes at small forward, where Afflalo is also an option in relief of Prince. The average age of Johnson (21), Stuckey (22), Afflalo (22), Maxiell (25) and Brown (26) is 23.3, which is another reason it makes sense to move one of the young big men into the starting lineup and add McDyess’ experience to the bench.

Though the Pistons have not found enough minutes to play five big men in the past, Perry thinks Curry will make it happen this year. “All five of those guys are going to get opportunities to play and get minutes,” he said. “That’s just going to make us better as we progress throughout the season and into the playoffs. The confidence level the coaches will have in all five of those guys playing up front and the confidence they’ll have among one another, I think that will be invaluable. I’m just looking forward to seeing how all of that goes. “We’ve got the right combination of age and experience and youth to allow that to happen. If you had all five young guys, it would probably be tough to play all five. But having a mix of youth and veterans, there’s enough minutes and there’s a need to be able to change things up and play five guys.” Though there probably won’t be many opportunities for Bynum, the Pistons like his defensive quickness and tenacity and the fact he’s a change-of-pace guard who could wind up filling a role similar to the one Lindsey Hunter has played in the past. Herrmann has something of an unorthodox playing style, but the Pistons think he has more to offer than he was able to show last season. He has very good shooting range and brings an element of toughness to the table while providing another option at small forward, especially in defending against taller players at that position. Samb was bumped to No. 6 big man by the acquisition of Brown, but Joe Dumars always maintained Samb would have a two-year indoctrination before being expected to join the rotation. If injury were to strike the frontcourt, Curry feels Samb would be ready to fill in as needed. Sharpe is a raw prospect, but has the offensive tools and size to provide matchup problems at small forward when he adapts to playing on the perimeter and comes to grips with the speed of the NBA game.

Los Angeles Clippers point guard Jason Williams announced his retirement from the NBA today, ending his 10-year career. Signed by the Clippers as a free agent on August 7, 2008, Williams did not appear in a game for Los Angeles.

Williams enjoyed a 10-year NBA career that saw him take the court for three different teams, (Sacramento 1998-2001, Memphis 2001-2005 and Miami 2005-2008). A member of the NBA Champion Miami Heat in 2005-06, Williams started all 23 playoff games and averaged 9.3 points and 3.9 assists for Miami in helping to win the organization’s first title. The West Virginia native leaves the NBA with career averages of 11.4 points, 6.3 assists, 1.3 steals, 2.4 rebounds while shooting 39.6 percent from the floor, 32.5 percent from three-point range and 81.6 percent from the foul line in 679 total games. Williams finishes his career with a 2.77 assist-to-turnover ratio.

He enjoyed his best statistical season in 2001-02 when he averaged 14.8 points, 8.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds for Memphis. In his four seasons with the Grizzlies, Williams became the club’s all-time assists leader and all-time leader in three-point field goals attempted in addition to being named the NBA’s Most Improved Player for the 2002-03 season by Sports Illustrated when he finished tied for second in the league in assists per game.

Jason Williams announced his retirement Friday, ending his 10-year NBA career less than two months after signing with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Williams, who helped the Miami Heat to the NBA title in 2006, averaged 11.4 points, 6.3 assists and shot 39.6 percent from the floor in 679 games. The point guard was drafted seventh overall pick in 1998 out of Florida by the Sacramento Kings and averaged 12.8 points and six assists as a rookie.

Williams joined the Memphis Grizzlies three years later, and in 2001-02 averaged 14.8 points and eight assists. In four seasons with the Grizzlies, Williams became the club's career assists leader. He played for the Heat from 2005-2008, and started all 23 playoff games in Miami's title run. He signed with the Clippers on Aug. 7.

Ray Ratto of the San Francisco Chronicle: "For the record, both vice president Chris Mullin and head coach Don Nelson are working on the final year of their contracts. Neither has begun talks with owner Chris Cohan or his right-hand man Bobby Rowell on a new one, and neither seems terribly bothered about that, at least not outwardly. But the problem of Ellis' punishment for mopedding his six-year, $66 million contract into jeopardy impacts Mullin and Nelson, because it seems clear that Cohan and Rowell want to make Ellis a bigger issue than Mullin and Nelson do, and if they aren't incredibly deft at getting their point across without alienating Ellis, they will have lost the face of their franchise over a principle that can be solved in any number of other and more creative ways."

John Denton of Florida Today: "Out all last season after tearing the rotator cuff in his left shoulder, Tony Battie is being looked at by some with the Orlando Magic as the team's biggest offseason acquisition. Those are lofty expectations indeed for a 32-year-old, 11-year veteran with a career scoring average of 6.7 points a game. But after the way the Magic got pushed around and physically dominated by the Detroit Pistons in the playoffs back in the spring, it has become quite apparent that the Magic need just what Battie gives them. ...'Maybe we lack the things that I do well, and those things don't always show up in the stat sheet. I'm not going to score 20 points or grab 15 rebounds, but I'm going to defend, play physical and be that big body we needed at times last year. I'll play that tough (power forward) or (center) to keep Dwight fresher and I'll set screens to get Turk and Rashard open. I'm ready to do those things again.'"

With Chucky Atkins injured, point guard Mateen Cleaves will get another chance to return to the NBA. Danny Servick, the agent for Cleaves, confirmed Friday his client will sign with the Nuggets before training camp, which begins Tuesday. Cleaves, a six-year veteran, last played in the NBA in 2005-06.

Cleaves, scheduled to arrive in Denver on Friday afternoon, will sign a one-year nonguaranteed minimum contract. While Servick said Cleaves had been invited to Denver’s camp before it was known that Atkins would undergo right knee surgery Wednesday, his chances of at least starting the season with the Nuggets are now obviously better.

Atkins is expected to miss six weeks. That would keep the point guard out of all of training camp and the early part of the regular season, which begins Oct. 29.“The Nuggets have always kept in touch with me regarding Cleaves,’’ said Servick, noting Cleaves worked out with them in April 2007, when the Nuggets chose to sign point guard Anthony Carter instead, and also in the summer of 2007.

The Bulls released their training camp roster on Friday. It contains a former Illinois star and one very large question mark.

Three players were signed to pad the roster, including ex-Illini power forward Roger Powell. The others additions are 6-9 former Virginia forward Elton Brown and 6-2 guard Darius Washington, who preceded Derrick Rose as a Memphis point guard.

The 6-foot-6 Powell was a key starter on the 2005 Illinois team that lost the NCAA tittle game to North Carolina. He spent a few months on the Utah Jazz roster during the 2006-07 season, then spent last year playing in Italy. Elton Brown, 25, has been a star in the D-League, averaging 20.4 points and 11.8 rebounds for Colorado last season. A highly-touted recruit when he first arrived at Virginia, Brown didn't live up to his billing and was not drafted out of college.

Former Marist College point guard Jared Jordan has signed an NBA Training Camp contract with the New Orleans Hornets.

Jordan, Marist’s all-time leader in assists who graduated in 2007, played for the Phoenix Suns’ Summer League entry earlier this year. He's been playing professionally in Lithuania.“It’s exciting to be in training camp again, with a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream of making an NBA team,” Jordan said. “You keep fighting and hope good things happen.”

Per Hornets’ team policy, terms of the contract were not released.

Yi Jianlian and Keyon Dooling are out 7-10 days due to left-ankle sprains. They each suffered them in one of the recent scrimmages, landing on someone else's foot.

That was the biggest news to come out of today's Media Day. No one seems overly concerned, though.

Coach Lawrence Frank called them "Grade 1" sprains. GM Kiki Vandeweghe said they were "slight sprains." Both players said they expected to play in Europe, if not sooner.

Allan Houston isn't coming back for the money, not after pocketing more than $140 million from the Knicks dating back to the 1996-97 season. And it's hard to imagine that his motivation is to take one more swing at a championship ring since the Knicks are still light years from reaching the Promised Land.

In fact, no one really knows why Houston, five years removed from being a healthy and productive NBA player, is attempting to make the Knicks' roster as a free agent. But Houston will be in training camp at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs on Monday after signing a contract with the club Thursday. The Knicks also announced the signing of Dan Grunfeld, the son of former Knicks president Ernie Grunfeld, who originally recruited Houston to the Knicks 12 years ago.

Both players will struggle to make the final roster since the Knicks already have 17players under contract, including Stephon Marbury, Jerome James, Patrick Ewing Jr. and Anthony Roberson.

Gilbert Arenas has ducked out of the Washington Wizards' annual preseason media day and avoided what was supposed to be his first public discussion of last week's knee surgery.

The All-Star point guard was the only Wizards player not made available to reporters at the team's arena on Friday. A Wizards spokesman said Arenas will address the media Saturday, when the team opens training camp in Richmond, Va.

Arenas and the team have offered varying timetables for when he might be able to play this season. He appeared in only 13 regular-season games last season because of problems with his left knee. Arenas has had three operations on the knee in the past 1 1/2 years.
