Celtics center Kendrick Perkins probably won't be able to shoulder the load when training camp starts Tuesday.

General manager Danny Ainge said yesterday that Perkins isn't expected to participate at the beginning of camp after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder July 2, but he should be ready for the start of the regular season. "He'll be trying to get through September," said Ainge, who added that the rest of the players on the roster are healthy. "I'm confident he will be in the starting lineup opening night."

With Perkins's status in doubt for exhibition games, it wouldn't be surprising to see Leon Powe start in his place. The Celtics also have newcomer Patrick O'Bryant at the position. "I'm comfortable at the center position," Ainge said.

The Miami Heat announced Saturday that they have mutually agreed with forward Kasib Powell to withdraw the qualifying offer that was extended to Powell, immediately making him an unrestricted free agent.

Powell was originally signed by the HEAT to a 10-day contract on Mar. 22, 2008. He was re-signed for the remainder of the season on Apr. 8. In 11 games with Miami (four starts) last season he averaged 7.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.82 steals and 27.6 minutes.

Gilbert Arenas didn't want to take attention from Washington's healthy players when he declined to talk Friday at the Wizards' media day and drew a fine from the NBA. On Saturday, the $111 million man tried to mask his frustration over the third surgery on his left knee in 1½ years by working with the team's young players as they opened their training camp at Virginia Commonwealth University. He also talked. Arenas, who signed a six-year contract in the offseason, was fined $15,000 by the NBA for declining to make himself available on Friday. "I felt that training camp, I wasn't going to be involved, playing and going out there practicing, so I shouldn't be grabbing all the spotlight," the All-Star point guard said after the team's two-hour morning workout. "If I'm sitting here grabbing up all the attention and there's people healthy, that starts to weigh on people, so I figure if I back out of it, let them get the attention, then everything is cool peace," Arenas said. For the third time in 17 months, Arenas is rehabbing a surgically repaired left knee, and said the odyssey has become ever more tedious. His latest surgery on Sept. 17 was to clean out debris from the first two. "You show signs of coming back, then doing too much sets you back further, then you've got to get it cleaned up to get the debris out from when you were doing well, and now I'm like, 'When is this ever going to end?

When can I just go out there and just play?' " he said. Arenas wrote on his blog that he expects to be back in December or January, and said he will get back on the floor as soon as he can. "As soon as I think I can play, I'm going to jump out there," said Arenas, who averages 22.8 points per game. "Sometimes I get criticized for not looking so good when I'm playing, but it's just in my nature. As soon as I think I can play, I'm going to be out on the floor."have the star around, and Arenas didn't let his frustration deter him from making his presence felt, especially as it relates to the Wizards' new players. "He brought a group over here early and he got them some shooting drills, so it's been good," Jordan said. "He's really into it." Arenas said the early workout was optional for players like team captain Caron Butler and other veterans, but not for the young guys. He told them he wanted them to get 300 makes in before practice got going. "I've just got to be a presence because, you know, you're part of the team.

Even though you're not playing, you're still a part of the team," he said. "Young guys need guidance and some of the veterans, they're trying to get their thing back. Somebody has to talk to the young guys." It's a role he has always enjoyed, just not publicly, he said. "I've been doing that," he said of his leadership, which was apparent during the half-hour that the workout was open to reporters. "I'm always helping the younger players because when I came in, I got help. I don't think I'd be here if the older guys didn't help me at Golden State." Away from the court, his rehab is going slowly. "Boring. Oh man, it's so boring," he said. "It feels like kindergarten stuff. Leg lifts, basic squatting, stuff I'm teaching my kids. Just trying to get the range of motion, trying to get the flexibility back."Taking it slow makes sense, Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said. "Gil is a young player, a very hard worker," he said. "We're not only looking for the next two or three months, we're looking for the long term. We expect him to come back and be an outstanding player in this league."

The Wolves continue to talk with unrestricted free agent Shaun Livingston about a contract, but it’s possible Livingston may continue to weigh his dwindling options — Portland says it has bowed out, Miami is smack up against the luxury tax – after training camps open next week because his surgically repaired knee won’t be fully ready anyway.

Expect the Wolves, whether they sign Livingston or not, to bring former NBA lottery pick Rafael Araujo, Las Vegas Summer League team guard Blake Ahearn and probably one more guard to camp, which begins Tuesday in Mankato.

Eric Snow, who almost certainly is done playing in the NBA due to a bad knee but still has a guaranteed contract for $7.3 million in 2008-09, will be in town to take a physical.
“That’s the next step in the process,” said Ferry, who is hoping some or all of Snow’s contract will be paid through an insurance policy.

Gilbert Arenas said he won't appeal the $15,000 fine the NBA awarded him for not making himself available for interviews during media day this morning (Friday) at Verizon Center. The NBA handed out $15,000 fines to both Arenas and the Washington Wizards after the guard didn't speak.

Agent Zero was on hand for photos for the media guide but then went to the trainers room to begin his rehab on his left knee and never returned. I quickly spoke with him in the hallway on his way out of Verizon Center after the interviews had concluded and he said he was doing well. When reached via text message just a bit ago, Arenas said he would accept the fine. "Yeah, that's what I heard," he said when asked about the fine. On whether he would appeal, Gil answered, "No, I don't appeal stuff. It's cool."

The Wizards were fined for not making Gil available, but according to a team source, fought to appeal the team fine, but had no luck. I guess I understand the fine to Gilbert, but am a little surprised by the team fine. Members of the PR staff repeatedly tried to get him to speak, but he declined. There's only so much they can do.Team staff said after Friday's session concluded that Gilbert will speak on Saturday at training camp.

*Forward Udonis Haslem, who has a sprained left big toe, said he hopes to be back on the court in about a week. He said he's making progress after having to wear a protective boot. Haslem invited the competition at starting forward, saying he wants to "fight" for the job and does not just want to be given it.

*Forward Dorell Wright said he is trying to be patient as he continues working his way back from knee surgery.

Spurs center Ian Mahinmi will miss at least the first several days of training camp, which begins Tuesday, as he continues recovery from a sprained right ankle he suffered recently in informal workouts at the team's practice facility. Mahinmi, a 6-foot-11, 230-pound big man from France who is entering his second season with the Spurs, spent the bulk of the 2007-08 season with the Spurs' Development League team, the Austin Toros. He played only six regular-season games with the Spurs, averaging 3.5 points and 0.8 rebounds.

Mahinmi showed up Friday at the team's preseason benefit golf tournament sporting a walking boot on his right leg. Spurs general manager R.C. Buford acknowledged the ankle sprain.“Everybody wishes he were fit and ready to go,” Buford said, “but he's not ready right now. We're trying to be preventive, as we always are. It's an ankle sprain and a boot, so it's something we're being careful with.”

The Spurs selected Mahinmi in the first round of the 2005 NBA draft (28th overall). He spent the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons in the French professional league before signing a rookie scale contract with the Spurs last summer. Mahinmi played 45 games with the Toros, averaging 17.1 points and 9.2 rebounds, leading the Toros to the D-League Finals. Mahinmi was a member of the Spurs' entry in both the Las Vegas Summer Pro League and the Rocky Mountain Revue summer league and had been expected to get significant playing time in preseason games before suffering the ankle sprain. Now his development as a potential backup to both All-Star power forward Tim Duncan and starting center Fabricio Oberto has suffered a temporary setback.

Of course, to stay there, Nene must remain healthy. He has missed a staggering 165 games during the past three seasons, including 66 last season, 37 because of testicular cancer.

But Nene, who returned from his cancer to play three late regular-season contests and three playoff games, said he's close to being fully healthy. There have been only some minor expected complications.

"I had a lot of pains in my stomach when I do a lot of exercise, but then I started getting better," Nene, who underwent testicular cancer surgery in January, said of working out in Denver throughout the summer. "That I can't control. It's a year to have things get out of my system."

With the notable exception of Gilbert Arenas, everyone is healthy. Oleksiy Pecherov says he still has some soreness in the left ankle he sprained back in June but expects to be ready to go all out this week.

Darius Songaila said his back is fine after he had some issues with it while training for the Olympics with the Lithuanian National team (he sat out after fearing a repeat of what happened two years ago when he required surgery after playing internationally.)

Antonio Daniels said his left wrist, the one that gave him huge problems late last season and into the playoffs, feels "fine" and he's good to go. He did say that he'll wear a light brace.Etan Thomas talked at length about his return from undergoing open-heart surgery last year at this time and said he is ready to go all out starting tomorrow. He's not sure about how long it's going take before he feels like his old self but he's eager to get started. "When something gets taken away from you, that's when you really learn to appreciate it," Thomas said. "So, I'm very excited to be back with my teammates playing basketball again."

The biggest update to come out of our meetings with Donnie Walsh and Mike D'Antoni today at the Garden was Danilo Gallinari's unsettling status.

Still experiencing back pain, he'll miss the two-a-days during Saratoga's training camp and D'Antoni said he likely won't be 100 percent until late in camp. I wouldn't expect a big impact from the 20-year-old 6-10 forward his rookie year. In fact, they should send him to the D-League when he's healthy, so he can play. Hopefully Eric Gordon won't make Donnie look too bad.

Aaron McKie is returning to the 76ers as an assistant coach and is expected to be introduced Monday, according to a team source familiar with the situation.

McKie's status apparently was placed on hold when he was arrested in June on charges that he had lied on application forms to purchase a gun in Pennsylvania in April. Brian McMonagle, his attorney, called it "an honest mistake." McKie received probation in the case.

He spent two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, then returned to the Sixers as a volunteer assistant. The Lakers, who still held his rights, included him as a sign-and-trade piece in a complicated deal with the Memphis Grizzlies; the Grizzlies released him in May.

Los Angeles Clippers point guard Jason Williams announced his retirement from the NBA today, ending his 10-year career. Signed by the Clippers as a free agent on August 7, 2008, Williams did not appear in a game for Los Angeles.Williams enjoyed a 10-year NBA career that saw him take the court for three different teams, (Sacramento 1998-2001, Memphis 2001-2005 and Miami 2005-2008). A member of the NBA Champion Miami Heat in 2005-06, Williams started all 23 playoff games and averaged 9.3 points and 3.9 assists for Miami in helping to win the organization’s first title.

The West Virginia native leaves the NBA with career averages of 11.4 points, 6.3 assists, 1.3 steals, 2.4 rebounds while shooting 39.6 percent from the floor, 32.5 percent from three-point range and 81.6 percent from the foul line in 679 total games. Williams finishes his career with a 2.77 assist-to-turnover ratio. He enjoyed his best statistical season in 2001-02 when he averaged 14.8 points, 8.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds for Memphis. In his four seasons with the Grizzlies, Williams became the club’s all-time assists leader and all-time leader in three-point field goals attempted in addition to being named the NBA’s Most Improved Player for the 2002-03 season by Sports Illustrated when he finished tied for second in the league in assists per game. Originally drafted with the seventh overall selection in the 1998 NBA Draft by Sacramento after one season at the University of Florida, Williams was named to the 1998-99 NBA All-Rookie Team following an electrifying first season that saw him average 12.8 points and 6.0 assists. Over the next nine seasons, Williams emerged as one of the most dependable point guards in the NBA, averaging double-figures in scoring and at least five assists per game in eight of his ten years in the league.

InsideHoops.com editor says: J-Will, aka “White Chocolate,” was a fun player to watch in his prime. Wild, flashy, sometimes out of control, he played like a streetballer, but was good. I will say he was one of the worst players in the whole league to interview. Getting decent answers from him was so painful I don’t think I ever wound up posting a single word he said. Still, he’ll be missed.

Gill (6-0, 190), is appearing on the Nets training camp roster for the second straight year, as he spent the 2007 preseason with New Jersey, appearing in four games. During the 2007-08 season, he spent 13 games, including one start, with the Nets and averaged 2.9 points in 11.5 minutes. He was waived by New Jersey on 12/12 and then signed with the Seattle SuperSonics on 3/24, appearing in one contest. The five year NBA veteran has averaged 3.1 points and 1.1 assists in 181 career games with New Jersey, Memphis, Portland and Indiana. While playing for the Nets in 2001, he was credited with scoring the eight millionth point in NBA history during a game against the Boston Celtics on 4/15. The Memphis Grizzlies announced today that they have signed free-agent swingman Quinton Ross. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.“We are pleased to bring Quinton Ross to our team,” said Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace. “He has been one of the best and most versatile backcourt defenders in the NBA the past four seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers. We are excited to bring him into training camp next week.”

four-year NBA veteran, Ross has spent his entire career with the Los Angeles Clippers (2004-08), averaging 4.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.71 steals in 21.1 minutes in 302 games (151 starts). The 6-6, 193-pound guard/forward enjoyed his best statistical season in 2006-07, setting career highs in points (5.2), steals (0.86) and field goal percentage (.467) in a career-best 81 games played. In the 2005-06 season, he helped the Clippers reach the Western Conference Semifinals by averaging 7.7 points on 53.4 percent shooting in 12 postseason games (10 starts), including 18 points (9-14 FG) and five rebounds in 40 minutes in Game 5 of the 2006 Western Conference Semifinals vs. Phoenix on May 18, 2006.

Undrafted in 2003 out of Southern Methodist University, Ross has played the most games of any undrafted player in Clippers history, surpassing former Grizzlies forward Bo Outlaw’s mark last season. Prior to joining the NBA, Ross spent one season overseas with Telindus BC Oostende in Belgium in 2003-04 before signing with the Clippers on August 16, 2004. The Dallas native is a cousin to Grizzlies rookie forward Darrell Arthur, who was the 27th overall selection in the 2008 NBA Draft.

The Portland Trail Blazers announced that center/forward Raef LaFrentz underwent arthroscopic surgery today to repair a tear in the labrum of his right shoulder.

Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the surgery at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles, Calif. LaFrentz, who sustained the injury during Portland’s game at Seattle on February 22, 2008, is expected to be out 6-8 months.

InsideHoops.com editor says: Raef has played a combined total of 66 games in the two previous seasons. It may be time to hang up the sneakers.

WIZARDS GUARD ANTONIO DANIELS : On his wrist: “No, I didn’t [have surgery on my wrist]. I got another opinion, and they told me it wasn’t the best thing for me to do. I feel a lot better. I’ll play with it lightly braced like I did this summer and God willing I’ll be fine.”

WIZARDS FORWARD DARIUS SONGAILA: On training camp: “It’s always good to start off healthy because you kind of get into the groove of things. During preseason and training camp, you start to form chemistry with the team. So if you miss that, then you kind of fall behind.”WIZARDS CENTER ETAN THOMAS: On missing last season:“It was really tough to sit there and watch and not be able to do anything, but it was also really motivational to be able to watch tapes of the games during my rehab. It’s great to be back and to come down and work out with the guys.”

WIZARDS GUARD JUAN DIXON: On returning to the Wizards: “It feels great to be back. I’m really excited to be back in Washington and to resume my career with the Wizards. I’m looking forward to the start of training camp. I’m ready to step-in and contribute wherever Coach (Eddie) Jordan and the team need me.”
