When Etan Thomas says that the process of recovering from open-heart surgery began with "baby steps," he really means it. "It started with just walking," said Thomas, who missed all of last season after undergoing surgery last Oct. 11 to replace a leak in his aortic valve. "Just getting up and taking a little walk around this little track they had at the hospital. I'd walk around maybe twice and I'd be exhausted for the day. Not tired. Exhausted. Wiped out. There would be older people out there doing the walking too, and they were whizzing by me. I was like: 'Man, I'm doing bad.' "

Nearly one year later, Thomas was on the court at Virginia Commonwealth University for the opening of training camp with the Washington Wizards. Thomas sprinted up and down the court, bumped and banged bodies with fellow centers Brendan Haywood and JaVale McGee and gave no indication that he was trying to erase a year's worth of rust. "I felt good, real good," Thomas said following the first of two practice sessions. "It was just fun to get back out there and play again. Everything's going great so far."

Thomas said he never doubted that he'd return to the game he loves, but he admitted the process of getting back was both physically and mentally taxing. He originally hoped to return last season, but suffered a setback following a collision during a practice. The issue wasn't the heart itself -- the valve is sound -- but his sternum had to recover after it was cracked open to perform the surgery. This summer, Thomas progressively increased his level of activity starting with non-contact sessions, then spirited games of one-on-one with Tony Massenburg, the former Maryland and NBA big man, and finally, full-court pickup games. "It's a long process, and you have to have a lot of patience," said Thomas, who has played in 347 games during six seasons with the Wizards. "Patience is probably the most important thing, because you are starting from scratch almost. You have to just start off walking and then you can only do a little bit more. That's tough, because you want to just jump back out there before you're ready."

Those who saw Rose practice in Las Vegas against the U.S. Olympic team in July—again, some with Bulls ties; some without—were wowed by his speed, ability to get to the rim and inability to be fazed by Chris Paul, Jason Kidd and Deron Williams.

"He's definitely one of the fastest guys in the NBA already," Williams said in China. "With the ball, his speed is amazing. I couldn't believe it. He is a tough big guard who has an NBA body already."

Bulls management expects Rose to have growing pains. But team officials aren't worried at all about Rose playing in his hometown, nor his eventual talent level.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press (Don Seeholzer) reports: The Wolves believe Kevin Love’s shooting and passing ability will make opposing teams pay for double-teaming Jefferson, as they did all last season. As for the questions about Love’s athleticism, after what coach Randy Wittman saw in the Las Vegas summer league, he said it’s not a concern. “He’s really more agile than people think,” Wittman said. “Is he going to jump out of the gym? No. Is he going to outsprint everybody up and down the floor? No. But other things that go with that make him an enticing player. He’s a very high basketball IQ guy. You like playing with guys that know how to play the game, that know how to read situations and how to read cuts. I think people feed off that. I think it helps everybody.”

The San Francisco Chronicle (Janny Hu) reports: Andris Biedrins was the youngest player ever drafted by the Warriors when he entered the league as an 18-year-old in 2004. The skinny teenager has since grown into Golden State’s anchor up front, becoming the only young big man to survive -and thrive - in Nellie-ball’s return to Oakland. The 6-foot-11 center nearly averaged a double-double last season with career-highs of 10.5 points and 9.8 rebounds in 27 minutes per game, and he’s looking to increase that production in his fifth NBA season. Biedrins spent the summer playing for the Latvian National Team, leading it to a 4-2 record and a spot in next summer’s Eurobasket 2009 championships. He also led the tournament in rebounding (13.7 rebounds per game), field goal percentage (.653) and double-doubles (six). But the most intriguing stat? Biedrins, known mostly as a defensive stopper and rebounder, averaged 22.3 points per game - third-best behind France’s Tony Parker and Britain’s Luol Deng.

The Detroit Free Press (Vince Ellis) reports: Detroit Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey missed the first 25 games of his rookie season after suffering a broken left hand in the final exhibition game, but averaged 7.6 points and 2.8 assists during the regular season. He really flashed his potential as a big 6-foot-5 guard in the playoffs. In Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Orlando Magic, he replaced an injured Chauncey Billups and led a Pistons’ surge with 19 points, although the team dropped the game. He followed with three double-figure scoring efforts out of six games in the Eastern Conference finals against the eventual NBA champion Boston Celtics. He upped his scoring average to 8.2 points per game during the playoffs. His play impressed so much that he was picked to scrimmage against the Olympic team in Las Vegas just before the team departed for its date with a gold medal in Beijing.

The Warriors signed free-agent center Justin Williams to a contract as a training camp invitee. Williams, 24, has appeared in 49 NBA games over the last two seasons, averaging a combined 3.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in 9.3 minutes per contest with Sacramento (48 games) and Houston (one game).

The 76ers will bring back former player and coach Aaron McKie as an assistant coach, according to a source within the organization.

McKie, who was most recently released by the Grizzlies, will join a Sixers assistant coaching staff that includes Jim Lynam, John Loyer and Jeff Ruland. The Sixers are expected to make the official announcement on Monday. McKie, who graduated from Simon Gratz High in Philadelphia and then starred at Temple in the early 1990s, played for the Sixers from 1997 to 2005. After a stint with the Lakers, McKie returned to the Sixers in 2007 as an assistant coach.

Because the Lakers still held McKie's rights, even though he was a coach with the Sixers, he was involved in a midseason Lakers-Grizzlies trade that sent Pau Gasol to Los Angeles. On June 22, McKie was arrested on a charge of lying on a gun application. McKie was placed on probation.

Former Oklahoma basketball player Wayman Tisdale says he's doing well in his recovery from a surgery to amputate part of his right leg.

Tisdale appeared in a video message at halftime of the Sooners' football game against TCU on Saturday night, telling fans that he's at peace following the operation. Tisdale is Oklahoma's all-time leading scorer and went on to play 12 seasons in the NBA with the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns.

He had the surgery in August on his right leg, where cancer was discovered last year.Tisdale says it was a serious operation, but something that needed to happen.

Gilbert Arenas didn't want to take attention from Washington's healthy players when he declined to talk Friday at the Wizards' media day and drew a fine from the NBA. On Saturday, the $111 million man tried to mask his frustration over the third surgery on his left knee in 11/2 years by working with the team's young players as they opened their training camp at Virginia Commonwealth University. He also talked.

Arenas, who signed a six-year contract in the offseason, was fined $15,000 by the NBA for declining to make himself available on Friday. "I felt that training camp, I wasn't going to be involved, playing and going out there practicing, so I shouldn't be grabbing all the spotlight," the All-Star point guard said after the team's two-hour morning workout. "If I'm sitting here grabbing up all the attention and there's people healthy, that starts to weigh on people, so I figure if I back out of it, let them get the attention, then everything is cool peace," Arenas said. For the third time in 17 months, Arenas is rehabbing a surgically repaired left knee, and said the odyssey has become ever more tedious. His latest surgery on Sept. 17 was to clean out debris from the first two. "You show signs of coming back, then doing too much sets you back further, then you've got to get it cleaned up to get the debris out from when you were doing well, and now I'm like, 'When is this ever going to end? When can I just go out there and just play?"' he said. Arenas wrote on his blog that he expects to be back in December or January, and said he will get back on the floor as soon as he can. "As soon as I think I can play, I'm going to jump out there," said Arenas, who averages 22.8 points per game. "Sometimes I get criticized for not looking so good when I'm playing, but it's just in my nature. As soon as I think I can play, I'm going to be out on the floor."

Regardless, coach Eddie Jordan said it was good to have the star around, and Arenas didn't let his frustration deter him from making his presence felt, especially as it relates to the Wizards' new players. "He brought a group over here early and he got them some shooting drills, so it's been good," Jordan said. "He's really into it." Arenas said the early workout was optional for players like team captain Caron Butler and other veterans, but not for the young guys. He told them he wanted them to get 300 makes in before practice got going. "I've just got to be a presence because, you know, you're part of the team. Even though you're not playing, you're still a part of the team," he said. "Young guys need guidance and some of the veterans, they're trying to get their thing back. Somebody has to talk to the young guys." It's a role he has always enjoyed, just not publicly, he said. "I've been doing that," he said of his leadership, which was apparent during the half-hour that the workout was open to reporters. "I'm always helping the younger players because when I came in, I got help. I don't think I'd be here if the older guys didn't help me at Golden State." Away from the court, his rehab is going slowly. "Boring. Oh man, it's so boring," he said. "It feels like kindergarten stuff. Leg lifts, basic squatting, stuff I'm teaching my kids. Just trying to get the range of motion, trying to get the flexibility back."Taking it slow makes sense, Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said. "Gil is a young player, a very hard worker," he said. "We're not only looking for the next two or three months, we're looking for the long term. We expect him to come back and be an outstanding player in this league."

Four days after last June's draft, the KnicksNew York Knicks ' president, 67, entered Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and went under the knife for one hour. An uncontrollable 50-year urge to smoke vanished along with the cancerous part of his tongue. "My doctor says he got it all," Walsh said. "Luckily, it was caught quickly before it could spread. Numerous pre- and post-op scans of his head and neck concurred it had been contained.

Physically, Walsh is almost back to normal. His mouth remains a little numb and his speech only betrays him when a conversation becomes lengthy. "It's like I have marbles in my mouth. But you can't really tell there's something missing unless I stick out my tongue." "Spare me," I promptly replied, "I'll take your word for it. "Something tells me your French kissing days may be over."

Consensual gallows humor between New Yorkers who've been friends for almost half their adult lives is not only expected but required. Anything to lighten his psychological load is licensed; Donnie's stare down with mortality admittedly shook him up like the grade-school nuns who habitually harped on the Hereafter.

Gordon, a restricted free agent, and the Bulls remain at an impasse on negotiations for a new contract. The talks started last summer, when he rejected a five-year offer worth $50 million. The Bulls' offer of six years and approximately $58 million did little for Gordon, who is believed to be asking for $13 million or more per year in a long-term deal. That would put the Bulls over the salary cap and into a dollar-for-dollar luxury-tax penalty, which the team will not do.

Gordon said he has ''no idea'' if a contract could be agreed upon in time for him to be present when two-a-day practices begin Tuesday. ''We've been talking here and there,'' Gordon said. ''But from where I stand, I think both sides are far apart. It is what it is. I can't say I'm discouraged or surprised.'' Bulls general manager John Paxson ''anticipates'' Gordon will be in camp on time. ''There is some time out there for us, but the reality is we've just been so far apart for so long,'' Paxson said. ''We believe we're closer to what the market is in the league. But anything can happen when there is a deadline and all that. The qualifying offer stands until Wednesday.''

Gordon can sign the team's qualifying offer of $6.4 million for next season and then become an unrestricted free agent next summer. A less viable option for Gordon, who has led the team in scoring each of the last three seasons, is a sign-and-trade deal. His agent, Raymond Brothers, has been unable to develop such a deal. Gordon's only other option is to come to terms on a multiyear contract with the Bulls because he has rejected the idea of playing for a European team. ''That's not an option because I would still be a restricted free agent [with the Bulls upon return to the NBA],'' Gordon said. ''Other than that, I'm not ruling anything out.''

New York Knicks president Donnie Walsh underwent successful surgery in late June to remove a cancerous part of his tongue, the New York Post has reported. "My doctor says he got it all," Walsh, 67, told the newspaper. "Luckily, it was caught quickly before it could spread."

Walsh, hired by the Knicks in April to replace Isiah Thomas, told the Post he felt like he has "marbles in his mouth," and that his tongue remains slightly numb, three months after the hour-long operation performed at New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Walsh said the cancer was diagnosed after a routine physical he had upon joining the Knicks. "If they have to cut my tongue out I'm going to leave New York without telling anybody, fly home to Indianapolis, go straight to my backyard and never come off the property again," Walsh said he told himself, according to the Post.

The next few weeks, however, proved vital for Walsh and the Knicks, who hired coach Mike D'Antoni in early May. He then had surgery, and promptly dumped a 50-year-old smoking habit.

The Nets have 15 guaranteed contracts, the most allowed on a roster once the season starts. They have also signed Eddie Gill, Brian Hamilton, Julius Hodge and Awvee Storey to round out their training camp roster.

The suspicions about the imminent release of Shawn Kemp were realised yesterday. Premiata Montegranaro announced the release of Shawn Kemp and the signing of Brandon Hunter. The former NBA superstar said that he feels sorry that the deal didn't go through and Montegranaro signed Brandon Hunter to take his place. Hunter was also mentioned in greek articles to interest the team of Trikala.

Antawn Jamison sat out of tonight's practice and is unsure of his status for tomorrow's lone workout. Jamison has a what the team is calling a strained right hip flexor and doesn't want to make it worse. Jamison said he "tweaked it" during a drill this morning.

"It's nothing serious now but if I don't take the proper precautions it could become something serious," Jamison said. "It felt better later today and we'll see how it feels tomorrow. I'm going to rest it tonight. The most important thing is to make sure I stay in shape. It's just something I tweaked a little bit."

I’m not the least surprised the Bobcats promoted LaSalle Thompson to a full-time coaching position. Coach Larry Brown brought him to the franchise in a strength-and-conditioning position, but it was obvious Thompson’s true value would be working with Charlotte’s big men.

Watching summer-league practices, it was obvious Thompson has the makings of a coach – bright, extroverted and articulate.

Inexperienced as many of the Bobcats’ big men are, they need someone like Thompson on this staff.

Here are the things you hear on the eve of training camp: Anderson Varejao is trying to improve his jumper by keeping his elbow closer to his body. Ben Wallace had a summer program of exercises to improve his back muscles and avoid the spasms that hampered him last year. They want to keep James' minutes under 40 a game. If Wallace can stay healthy and James isn't overworked, I'll be happy. I can live without Varejao's jumper.
