Ted is doing it his way, screw favre.
Let's be honest he is building for two to three years down the road.
Look at our TE's: Franks (over the hill-slow) NO ONE worth a crap or better then a journeymen after him.
WR: Needed a playmaker-It looks like the best we get is Jones who has about a 50% chance to make the team as it stands now.
RB: I like the Brandon Jackson (4.54 on a small guy isn't great though), but the reality is Jackson/Morency is the weakest RB pair in the entire league.
So basically he has gone out and added Jackson and Jones. I bet Favre has to be excited.
Might as well just keep developing the defense and for another couple years and have Aaron Rodgers as a game manager type QB.
Message to Favre: Ted wants you gone!

i thought he was building for 2 or 3 years down the road 2 or 3 years ago already. Rodgers will be on the bench for his 3rd year coming up.
2 or 3 years down the road our cornerbacks will be toast. 2 or 3 years from now donald driver will be near toast. kampman will be on the decline since he should be about 29 this year. KGB is already pretty much toast and no one wants him around except for third downs. no real RB depth yet as you noted. decent linebackers.. for now... cullen jenkins just got another "suck on this for a little" contract when he works excessively hard. the line seems to be ok but even Clifton and Tauscher are going to be toast in 2-3 years. Clifton by far. tight end has been a joke for about 3 years. lets face it, Manuel was one of the worst ego-maniac moves he made. "i like my boys." while hes out there running 6 miles per hour to catch up on blown coverage. worst thing ive EVER seen in pro sports in a while.
i think Tedstopher just has a ultra-conservative way of "building" on the cheap (hence why everyone has problems coming here and theres so many contract problems) and most of our "talent" hes drafted over the past 2 years has amounted to mostly serviceable filler (while weeding out Sherman's mess, ill give him the benefit of the doubt there... sort of). jennings has been nice.. after the injury he was slowed down and had some very questionable plays / lack of route finishing.
this teams held together by old men.
onward to collapse!

He'll probably give a couple guys extensions. Someone may become available if they get cut, I don't really know if anyone of quality will however.

He's still the best QB in our division and it's not even close. You win your division -your in the weak NFC anything can happen. Would it be asking too much to bring in just a few studs on offense and go for it?
From ESPN CLayton's First day Losers list
3. Brett Favre -- for now: Favre came back from potential retirement for a playoff run, but he's waiting for a big push from the Packers' personnel department. The wait netted him backup cornerback Frank Walker in free agency. That's it. Unless he was cutting the grass on his tractor, Favre might have been sitting around waiting for the Packers to acquire a big, fast receiver like Robert Meachem or find the running back to replace Ahman Green, who left for Houston to reunite with former Packers head coach Mike Sherman. The first round gave him defensive tackle Justin Harrell, a good lineman who fills a need. Brandon Jackson, a running back from Nebraska, went to the Packers in the second round but many thought he would go in the third, just like Green did years ago. Don't get me wrong: Jackson is a good sleeper back, better than people think. He's tough, he runs hard, and he should help. But sleepers may not wake up a quarterback waiting for greatness. Sounds to me like the Packers need to make that final push to get Randy Moss to satisfy Favre. That could happen Sunday. Favre might stop weeding the garden for that.

Favre?
Look, I love the guy. I'm thrilled I'll get to see him play one more season.
But we could have added Moss, Johnson, Meachem, whoever...and we're still no where near good enough to make a run.
That winning streak to end the season was about the worst thing to happen to this franchise. It seems to have given a large contingent of fans the belief that this team was actually decent, and it screwed us out of a guy like Adrian Peterson.
The Packers were simply awful last year. I'm blown away that people actually think we could make a run with Favre with a few moves to add aging vets or a rookie or two to pair with Favre.
Thompson is smart. He's building this team so it won't be so reliant upon one person. A strong D and a powerful running game. Favre has his ring and he'll leave with nearly every record in the book. Why is everyone so hung up on him going out on top? Unless your name is John Elway, that doesn't ever happen.

We've had this discussion before so you know where I stand - the North is weak, the NFC is weak, a few moves on top of this and I still think we could have a chance- I feel better about them this year then I did last (maybe I'm too optimistic),,,,. I remember you predicted 10 Wins or something like that last year so you were wrong. I may be wrong here. The one thing I know is that fans wont keep tolerating .500 or below teams much longer-Ted may have along term plan, but unless he starts producing something the mob will turn on him quickly. Keep in mind the new President isn't tied to him like Harlan. If they don't bring in Moss and we have another receiver go down and left with a journeymen like Martin as #2, the young RBs don't work out, the DT re injures his torn muscle and can't play, they find out Jones is Cory Rogers part 2, Woodson goes down and no one worth a crap to start at CB, and Franks and Manuel still suck - all possible (some pretty probable) you will see the mob turn on Teddy very fast (hope he doesn't own a dog).
I thought you would be happy with these picks (you had a good day), and I hope they work out.
PS: Did you ever get my message?

every team in this league looks terrible at certain points. hell, even the masterful patriots got beat by a lowly Miami Dolphins team to end their epic streak. and age? come on, everyone can look back at the dink and dunk Gannon laugh fest with the 2 mummies of Brown and Rice going deep into the playoffs.
the packers blew some games last year they could have easily won (i know, we heard this a million times). two off hand any fan will think of early are NO and STL. and previous years to that, the offense and favre (when the line was good) was carrying this team to many lucky-ass wins. theres numerous games we could have lost in those sherman years. or how about the playoffs that we probably should have never had any place being in (thats why we got whipped by ATL and why 4th and 26 happened with the mighty barnett playing too low with the tight end. we all seen the tape 645,000 times)... and hell, the only reason we got to that 4th and 26 game was through OVERTIME against a then immature Seahawks team. yeah, we were really "dominating" back then. hell, we depended on some Out of the League wideout on the Cardinals to help us win the division one year. external players are now controlling the packers domination.
so whats the middle ground here for being a "truly competitive" team made by a mastermind genius of this multi-billion dollar quasi-military laugh fest? every team needs a little CHANCE to go their way whether its not getting injuries, stars aligning or of course "imposing their will" in true macho fashion (as soon as that 140 pound kicker wins the game for you with a fancy field goal, grrrr).
ill bet money that once Ted gets "his team" of "good Football Guys" going, theres still going to be some hilarious inadequacy for people to whine about. so and so doesnt fit so and so's scheme and is hogging our cap. we cant go anywhere with that mess, blah blah. the coach cant get the "True potential" out of these guys, more excuses.
and they could have told Favre to leave if we were really rebuilding. it does Ted no favor to leave that corpse in there (except to keep wisconsin running) when he has "building" to do for this superbowl thats on the way - its just a cap hit.. but necessary to build an empire of Rodgers.
this dude is so far off from anything that he's willing to let the old man keep playing as a charity to the fans/favre (records) and then let someone else step in to learn the ropes. hell, that could be at least a 5 season delay in return.
yours truly, Marquand Manuel.

It says a lot about this team that the allegedly "mediocre" Favre is still the best player on this team and the one player most instrumental in whether this team has success or not. If Favre is on the decline, that doesn't say much about the team around him. And that, of course, falls on Thompson.
I wasn't a big advocate of trading for Moss but given the price it took to get him it's a risk worth taking. Obviously Belichick agrees and it's safe to say he's had a bit more success than Thompson in building a championship team. The Darrell Jackson trade which is still rumored to be happening is another example of a cheap price paid for a top talent who could have helped this team immensely.
At some point you need to score points to win and as we sit here today the Packers have 11/2 wide receivers, 0 tight ends and 0 running backs. Perhaps Favre would look better than "mediocre" if there wasn't so much Grade D talent around him.
Look at what the Pats did this off-season. They loaded up offensively to better help Brady because they realize their offense needed improvement. They brought in three talented WRs (assuming the Moss deal goes down) and all they did was subtract an aging Corey Dillon. And this was a team that made the playoffs last season and was a legitimate post-season threat, not a team like the Packers who finished .500 by virtue of playing in a horribly weakened down conference.
As I've said before, I'm sure Thompson has a plan of some kind but I'll be damned if I have a clue what it is.

Moss to the Pats makes all the sense in the world. They've got an older team with many leaders, and they're already excellent. I thought when they picked up Stalworth and Thomas this offseason that was enough to 'put them over the top'. Getting Moss would certainly add to that.
But Moss doesn't make us a title contender.

I understand what you are saying, but to me it might have been fun to watch the Farve to Moss combination. This team is kind of bland to me. Do people really think that our offensive line is that great? I dont think AP would have help us that much this year either. This team is a long way from being a good team. I really cant bear to watch TT when he drafts. Seems like he reaches a lot.DrugBust wrote:Moss to the Pats makes all the sense in the world. All I can do is trust TT - for now. By the end of this year we will KNOW without question whether he is a genius or dumbass. He has made some VERY defining decisions.
His great stength is suppose to be draft. OK - let's see - Harrell, Jackson over Pittman, Jones and Rouse. And don't give me any couple year develoment crap. 1st round picks are expected to contribute right away. As are most 1st day picks. This is evidenced by TT's success last year.
And IF TT survives that test - there is still Rodgers. At this point I wish Brett would request a trade to a contender and we accomodate him by asking for just a 4th. Why keep him here?
Also TT's NO on Moss. Forget speculation of other opinions having impact. Plenty of reports from Harlan and new guy, Wolf and TT himself - IF you feel it's right - you ignore the fans. Moss decisions is on TT. May be right or may be big miss. Its NOT about SuperBowl - its about being the best team you can be. IF you want to use that stupid SuperBowl crap argument - Tell me that the 4th round pick the Pack makes will be critical to winning the Superbowl? Let's compare the success of Moss vs our 4th round pick at season's end.
Finally Cory Williams. Decent DT. Was 3rd in sacks among all NFC DTs. That's a lot better than most of you realize. Will Cory resign now?
No Turner. No Norwood. No Jackson (WR). We'll see.
I can envision TT being right. I really hope so. I want Pack to win. We are not going to be .500 this year. We could have been IMO but OK - let's build for future. When is the future suppose to arrive? IF we are still losing in '08 you can only thank one man and its not the scapegoat Sherman any more.

Still seems to be a lot available - it just seems crazy our only pre-draft off season FA pickup is Frank Walker.

What do the Pats and Packers have in common? The Pats are veteran team that is a legit SB contender. Teams like that add veterans that can put them over the top right now. The Pack are rebuilding.
The great run we had for several years was nice, but it doesn't take a genius to realize we ran out of gas. You have to rebuild with young guys in the NFL. Adding a headcase 30 year old WR isn't a smart move for a rebuilding team. What happens when Favre retires after next year and we have crazy Moss on our hands with a young QB?
