COLUMBUS--The Blackhawks placed veteran goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin on waivers Monday.

The 35-year-old Khabibulin is in the final year of a contract paying him $6.75 million. He was originally scheduled to be in goal in Sunday night's exhibition game against Dallas. Free-agent signee Antti Niemi played instead, fueling speculation the Hawks were about to make a move.

Turns out, they were.

"We'll evaluate all our options and we'll have more to say when waivers are over," general manager Dale Tallon said confirming the move.

Can Dale pull off a trade for a center to deepen our scoring lines?

And the Robert Lang deal might make more sense right now.

I would certainly hope another move is coming since the Kings were pretty much on their knees for Khabi on Free Agent day. If they weren't gonna keep him around, why not ship him to LA a few months ago? I hope it's because something is already in the works.

This is basically what could happen-

If a team claims Khabi off waivers, the claimant would become responsible for all of his salary and cap hit.

If Khabi clears waivers, the Hawks are free to assign him to Rockford if they wish.

If assigned to Rockford, the Hawks would be responsible for all of his salary but none of it would count against the salary cap.

If the Hawks wished to recall him from Rockford, he would have to first clear reentry waivers. If claimed on reentry waivers, the Hawks would be responsible for 50% of his salary which would count towards the cap.
