The fifth-year guard, who has led the Bulls in scoring the last three seasons, has a Wednesday deadline to either hit on a long-term extension or sign a one-year qualifying offer of $6.4 million and become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Gordon said he would wait to practice until making his decision in time for Wednesday's deadline, thus missing the first of five double-session days in coach Vinny Del Negro's first training camp on Tuesday. General manager John Paxson termed Gordon's decision "business" and "not a huge deal."

Asked if he would revisit the negotiating table with the Bulls if he became an unrestricted free agent next summer, Gordon hedged. "I don't know," he said. "Ask me a year from now."

Backup point guard Sam Cassell is back to help the Boston Celtics try to repeat as NBA champions. Cassell had been in touch with Doc Rivers during the summer, but the Celtics coach didn't know if Cassell had decided to come back for another season. Cassell, 38, who joined the team in March for the playoff run, showed up for media day Monday to sign a contract for his 16th NBA season. Cassell averaged 7.6 points and two assists during the regular season in helping Boston win its NBA-record 17th title.

Howard says he's sorry: Mavericks forward Josh Howard has apologized for disrespecting the national anthem and "everything that's happened in the last five months." Howard focused on expressing remorse for his comments about the anthem during a YouTube video. And he also apologized for other off-court problems, which include a July arrest after police said he was drag racing at 94 mph in a 55 mph zone and his admission that he smokes marijuana.

Jones leaves Bucks: Ex-Piston Damon Jones left the Bucks camp, saying he would try to catch on with another team. • Pfund resigns: Heat general manager Randy Pfund , who helped Miami win the 2006 NBA championship as the highlight of his 13 years with the franchise, resigned Monday, saying it was time to pursue other opportunities in the NBA.

Not that Antonio McDyess had limited expectations for his role with the Pistons this season, but he honestly thought he was going to be Lindsey Hunter-ed this season -- which means he would do what Hunter did last year, sit out most of the season and be ready to play after the All-Star break. "I really didn't have any expectations as far as starting or coming off the bench or even playing," he said. "I mean, nobody told me anything. I didn't know what it was going to be."

McDyess was thus happy to hear that he would have a role, a significant one, as the first big man off the bench. "I am not the coach but I know Mike (Curry) is pretty smart and he knows what he's doing," McDyess said. "If he feels it's a better fit for us with me coming off the bench, then I am willing to do whatever it takes."

Curry has said he will let Amir Johnson, Jason Maxiell and Kwame Brown fight for the fifth starting spot.

The deadline for Maxiell to sign the three-year, $15 million contract extension the Pistons have offered is Oct. 31. If he doesn't sign, he will become a restricted free agent next season.

"We're just talking; there's nothing going on there yet," Maxiell said. "I am not going to focus on that now. Either way, I am coming back, so I just have to get ready for this training camp."

Maxiell knows that Johnson is the pre-camp frontrunner to win the starting spot, but he's not about to give up the fight. "Starting is something I would love to do," he said. "I just know I have to practice hard every day and try to win the job."

Tayshaun Prince didn't much want to discuss his Olympic gold medal -- "I think I've said everything there was to say about that," he said. Chauncey Billups , who had to pull himself off the team to tend to family issues, however, was more expansive.

"It was great to see them play so well," he said. "The gold-medal game was great. I was talking to Tay every step of the way. I would have loved to be there and win that medal, but it wasn't in the cards."

Billups, by the way, said his left hamstring injury didn't fully heal until six weeks after the end of the season. He said he was completely fit and ready to start camp.

Wallace changed his number back to No. 30 after wearing No. 36 the last four seasons to honor his brother, who died at age 36 several years ago.

"I gave 36 a few years and now it's time to get back to my original number," he said.

... Alex Acker will have every chance to earn the 15th and last roster spot. The Pistons signed him to a partially-guaranteed one-year deal Monday morning. The deal could be worth up to $687,000. The Pistons also will hold an option on him for the 2009-10 season.

Media day isn't usually a contact sport, but there was nearly some blood shed on Monday. Maxiell was swinging a sledgehammer -- filming one of the popular Palacevision pre-game spots -- when the hammer flew off the stick. It flew about half a court length away. Luckily, it didn't hit anybody.

NEW LOOK: Hamilton sported a new look. His beard has grown to biblical proportions over the summer, and he was joking around about it.

"I call it my Brad Pitt," Hamilton said, jokingly. "When you see Brad Pitt on the street when he ain't doing movies he got this real scrunchy look."

Alas, Pistons fans probably won't get a chance to see it at the Palace. Hamilton said he was going to cut it before training camp starts today.

NOTEBOOK: With the signing of free-agent guard Alex Acker, it appears likely that Lindsey Hunter will not return to the Pistons this season. The backcourt defensive specialist would have been entering his 16th season. Acker's deal is for two years for the league minimum of around $700,000 with only a portion of the first year guaranteed.

Maxiell, a power forward, said he was only concentrating on training camp and not his contract negotiations. If the Pistons and Maxiell can't agree to terms on a new deal by Oct. 31, then Maxiell will become a restricted free agent after this season.

If there was any consensus of opinion to be gathered from media day Monday it was this: The veterans were relieved and thrilled that president Joe Dumars decided to keep them together and that in new coach Michael Curry, they absolutely trust. "I think that's good," Rasheed Wallace said. "I am glad he decided to keep it going. We've been to the mountain top with this core group and it's good that Joe had the confidence to know we can get back there." Although Antonio McDyess said he was "shocked" to see everybody back, Richard Hamilton, who for this one final day was sporting an Abe Lincoln-like beard, said he would have been shocked if anybody was traded. "I know there were a lot of teams that wanted us to break up," Hamilton said. "Everybody was licking their chops there at the end of the summer. But I think we have a great opportunity. "I know MC (Curry) is going to do a great job and I am just real happy he's the one coaching us."Players were reluctant to look back on yet another painful conclusion, but there were some questions that needed to be answered.

Wallace said that he didn't really have a disconnect with former coach Flip Saunders, though it was clear that Saunders had lost the respect of the older players. "It was just with us as vets and he really didn't want to listen to us," Wallace said. "That's what really hurt him." Speaking on radio station WDFN, Wallace used this analogy: "If you mess up a guy's desk and throw coffee on it every day and he doesn't do anything to stop you, are you going to respect him?" Wallace, though, didn't blame Saunders for the team's failures against the Celtics. "Basically, it was just not our time," he said. "That's just the way the ball bounces sometimes. I think we were all positive and thought that we would beat Boston. But we can't cry over spilled milk now. We just have to go out and prove to all the naysayers that are saying we're too old and our window is closed and all this and that -- we have to prove them wrong." On his own lackluster performance in the season-ending Game 6, Wallace said: "I just didn't want to have the same outcome that happened in the Cleveland series (in 2006) where everyone thought I was a negative influence. I tried to play hard (against Boston), I just couldn't hit shots." Wallace is in the final year of his contract, and he hasn't decided whether or not he would seek another contract after this season. "I don't know," he said. "I won't even think about that until after the season."

Wallace, who has changed his number back to No. 30, which he last wore in the championship season of 2004, said he was on board with all the changes Curry has made thus far. Those changes include daily work with strength and conditioning coach Arnie Kander, more emphasis on playing in the low post on offense and reduced playing time to facilitate youngsters Amir Johnson, Jason Maxiell and Kwame Brown. "We expect MC to be a leader," Wallace said. "He already has that respect from the players. We know Mike is a winner. He was a tenacious player -- I know because I played against him -- and I know he's going to bring that over to coaching." From the sound of it Monday, the veteran players were looking forward to being held accountable and to having a more disciplined structure. "We all know MC real well," Chauncey Billups said. "I know he's tough, hard-nosed and we are going to get back to playing Detroit-style basketball -- we are going to play hard, defend and stay together." Said Hamilton: "We know what we are capable of being, but we have to play that way all the time. It can't be where you guys are saying, 'Well, which team will show up tonight?' We have to pride ourselves on going hard every night. If we do that, we will be all right."

You shouldn't believe in the Pistons. Not for a second, an iota or one scintilla. At least, not now. The Pistons have to prove that this season won't end the way the past three have -- in disappointment. Yet, when the Pistons held their media day Monday, there still were the usual suspects. Sure, there were a few new players, including center Kwame Brown, guard Will Bynum and forward Walter Sharpe. But none of those players will have anything to do with whether the Pistons make it to the Finals. If the Pistons are able to finally get over the hump after falling two games short in each of the last three Eastern Conference finals, it will be because of what Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Rasheed Wallace do.

Must prove themselves:The onus is on them to make believers of fans. "What we have to do for the fans is we have to almost earn their trust back," new coach Michael Curry said. The Pistons, who start practicing today, understand why some will be skeptical. "I don't know if people should believe," Chauncey Billups said. "You never know. You can't really judge things until it's over. We have the same team, a different coach. That's a big piece of the puzzle." Indeed. Curry is the unknown. His impact could be huge. Then again, it might not matter at all. "A lot of the responsibility falls on my shoulders," Curry said. There's more change than just Curry, however. In the Pistons' practice facility, there used to be a big mural of the 2004 championship. It's gone. The message is simple: Too many players were living off that magical season. It's been four seasons since the Pistons tasted champagne. The team that was told it couldn't and did has become a team that has been there, done that. Simply put, other teams -- Miami, Cleveland and Boston -- wanted what the Pistons had experienced more.

More expected of backups:If you're looking for something different with the 2008-09 Pistons, there are two things. Last year, young players were developed. They got to play. This year, the Pistons expect them to not only play, but finish games. If a younger player is playing well in the fourth quarter, Curry is not automatically going to put the starter back in for the final minutes. You saw guard Rodney Stuckey prove during the playoffs last season that he can play big when it matters most. Then there's Brown. Most don't expect anything from the former No. 1 overall pick, but Brown, 26, is the first backup big man the Pistons have had in recent years who actually could unseat the guys in front of him. That was never the case with Elden Campbell and Dale Davis. Still, it's hard not to look at this team and think we'll get more of the same, which is pretty good for most franchises in the NBA -- a 50-win season, a division title and a long playoff run. But fans have seen that movie and want something with a happy ending for a change.Team president Joe Dumars thinks fans can still believe in his team, "Because we have a proven track record that we're going to show up and compete at the championship level." We'll see.

The Raptors signed free-agent forward Jamal Sampson, a cousin of Ralph Sampson, who is expected to give Toronto frontcourt depth after the loss of Nathan Jawai.

The Raptors announced Monday that Jawai will be held out of practice because of concerns from a routine cardiac screening. The first indigenous player from Australia to be drafted by an NBA team, Jawai was the 41st overall pick in June. Toronto opened training camp Tuesday and has 14 players on its roster.

Sampson, a five-year veteran, has played for Charlotte, Denver, the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee and Sacramento. He has averaged 2.0 points and 3.4 rebounds in 72 career games. He was a second-round pick by Utah in 2002. Ralph Sampson was a four-time All-Star and the 1983-84 NBA Rookie of the Year.
