Some Piston fans were angered by a column by Greg Johnson of the Grand Rapids Press, titled "Don't expect NBA title from this Pistons group", but it was a well thought out column that breaks down the events of the last four months.

Sure, there is reason for optimism. Putting Michael Curry in charge and signing Kwame Brown could bring about a change in team chemistry and beef up the Pistons rotation that was sorely needed, but Johnson's column voices the concerns that many Piston fans have. Pessimistic hope.

Patrick Hayes of the Flint Journal's "It's Just Sports" voices his offense to Johnson's column in a piece titled "Give the Pistons their proper respect and stop being so hateful", making comparisons between the Pistons and the Red Wings. It's a good rebuttal to some of the criticism that the Piston team, and Joe Dumars, has been receiving, even if I disagree with some of the points. The Red Wings have won 4 Stanley Cups the last 11 seasons in a league that has gone through earthquake-like changes and where one hot goalie from a sixth seeded team can take a series almost single-handily. There cannot be any real comparison to those two franchises in the manner attempted by Mr. Hayes.

Hayes does make some good points, but there is a difference between pessimistic fans who have been disappointed the past four seasons and wanted Dumars to make a change and "haters". Rasheed Wallace in his interview with Stoney and Wojo was brutaly honest. He gave both hope and worry in Joe's decision to replace Flip Saunders with Michael Curry, but keep the core intact.

Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol might sit out some of the Los Angeles Lakers' preseason games after a hectic offseason. Bryant helped lead the United States to a victory over Gasol and Spain in the gold medal game in the Summer Olympics. Bryant and Gasol each took only a few weeks off before reporting for the first day of training camp Tuesday.

Bryant and Gasol played a carefree game of one-on-one near the end of the first of the Lakers' two practices. Their teammates, meanwhile, ran a set of wind sprints at the conclusion of their morning workout. "This week I'm just seeing how they feel, how's their energy level, and then we'll adjust," coach Phil Jackson said. "I was told not to say that I wasn't going to play Kobe in exhibition games. "So I'm not going to say Kobe's not going to play in this exhibition game or that exhibition game. But there is a chance they may not play in an exhibition game."

Jackson said last week he was determined to monitor Bryant's playing time more closely this season. The reigning NBA MVP, who turned 30 on Aug. 23 and is entering his 13th season, averaged 28.3 points in 38.9 minutes in leading the Lakers to the NBA Finals last season. "Phil does a good job of making sure we stay in good condition, but that he doesn't overexert us too much because of the long summer we had," Bryant said. "I feel great. I could run all day. I'm in shape, so I'm ready to go." The Lakers play their first preseason game Oct. 7.

Darius Miles says he has no clue what made him fail a drug test that will cause him to serve a 10-game suspension if he makes it through training camp with the Boston Celtics.

Speaking at length Tuesday for the first time since his suspension was announced by the NBA over the summer, Miles said he never took diet pills -- the over-the-counter medication in which the banned stimulant he tested positive for, phentarmine, is most commonly found -- and had never taken any medication other than what was prescribed by Portland's doctors and trainers. "I wish I knew. I really do wish I knew, but [Celtics president] Danny Ainge told me 'leave it alone,' so I left it alone," Miles said.

He said there is no pain, only stiffness, in his surgically repaired right knee, and he was the fastest big man on the court Tuesday afternoon when coach Doc Rivers ordered the losing team from a scrimmage to run 17 cross-court wind sprints, with the enticement that the first big man to do eight would not have to finish all 17. Miles also bragged that he had dunked over rookie Bill Walker during his two months of workouts with Celtics players over the summer. He did not seem bitter over the drug suspension, although he admitted his willingness to appeal was altered when he learned that the lost earnings from the suspension would be deducted from his Celtics' contract, not his more lucrative Blazers' deal. "I'll just serve my suspension. I could have gone to a team that would have me to appeal it and fight it, but I went to a team that told me to leave it alone, so I'll leave it alone," Miles said. "What's better than to come back from an injury and play for the champs? That makes me look good and other teams look bad."

Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: "Seldom have a team and player been more suited for each other than Jermaine O'Neal and the Toronto Raptors. From his trademark headband (exchanged for Raptors red after years of Indiana Pacers gold) to his slimmed-down frame (thanks to eight weeks without sugar and dairy) to his healed left knee, O'Neal looked quite at ease in his new surroundings yesterday. 'This is a nice group and I've been with some good teams and some good players,' O'Neal said. 'We know what (the media) and the city expects of the Raptors. We have to develop that swagger, to believe we are the better team. I know this is a hockey town, but we'd like to make it a Maple Leafs and Raptors town.'"

Rob Parker of The Detroit News: "You shouldn't believe in the Pistons. Not for a second, an iota or one scintilla. At least, not now. The Pistons have to prove that this season won't end the way the past three have -- in disappointment. Yet, when the Pistons held their media day Monday, there still were the usual suspects. Sure, there were a few new players, including center Kwame Brown, guard Will Bynum and forward Walter Sharpe. But none of those players will have anything to do with whether the Pistons make it to the Finals. If the Pistons are able to finally get over the hump after falling two games short in each of the last three Eastern Conference finals, it will be because of what Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Rasheed Wallace do."

The Jazz have discussed contract extensions with the camps of both starting power forward Carlos Boozer and starting center Mehmet Okur, general manager Kevin O'Connor said during the team's opening session of training camp here Tuesday morning.

But Boozer doesn't plan to decide anything until next offseason, including whether to extend or pursue opportunities in the free-agency market, he said before the Jazz's evening workout. "We're going to enjoy this season and play basketball," Boozer said. "I look forward to having an opportunity to win, and hopefully win a championship. "We're gonna let (contract matters) slide, so it's ready to be dealt with in the summertime," he added Tuesday night. "Right now we have an opportunity to play basketball, and have fun doing that, so we're going to focus on that." Both Boozer and Okur are eligible to opt out of the final year of their current deals after the coming NBA season. But neither player, in fact, is anywhere near close to striking a deal. "We've had some conversations with him (Boozer) about it," O'Connor said. "And, look: As far as I'm concerned, I feel Carlos wants to be here. And as far as we're concerned we certainly want him to be here, and then we're going to address it accordingly."

Asked Tuesday if he expected to continue talks with Boozer during the season, O'Connor said, "We might have some, but probably not." Such also seems to be the case with Okur, an All-Star in 2007 who is in the fifth season of a six-year, $50 million contract. "We've had a little bit of conversations, but same thing (as Boozer)," O'Connor said. Boozer, an All-Star the past two seasons, currently is in the fifth year of a six-year, $68 million deal.

You want information? I got some information. Last night the news came down that Nathan Jawai, the intriguing second-round pick the Raptors got as part of the O'Neal trade, would be held out of training camp due to an undisclosed heart problem discovered in pre-season cardiac screening. No one will say what this means, but the NBA has become understandably vigilant about this kind of thing since Jason Collier was tragically felled by a heart problem a few years ago.

confess to knowing nothing about Jamal Sampson, but it's hard to run two-a-days with just 12 guys so they signed another big and he's it. Here's the release: The Toronto Raptors announced Tuesday they have signed free-agent power forward-centre Jamal Sampson. Per team policy, financial details were not disclosed. Sampson, 6-foot-11, 235 pounds, is a five-year NBA veteran who has spent time with Denver, Sacramento, Charlotte, the Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee. He posted career-best totals of 3.4 points and 5.3 rebounds in 23 games for Charlotte in the 2004-05 season.

Sampson has appeared in 72 career NBA games, averaging 2.0 points and 3.4 rebounds. He recorded career highs of 10 points at Orlando on January 7, 2005 and 12 rebounds January 30, 2007 at the Los Angeles Lakers. Sampson was drafted by the Utah Jazz in the second round of the 2002 NBA Draft. He played one season at the University of California where he averaged 6.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.17 blocks in 32 games. He posted four double-doubles, and had 15 points, 17 rebounds and four blocks versus Washington. He was named to the PAC-10 All-Freshman Team. Sampson is the cousin of Ralph Sampson, the number one overall selection in the 1983 NBA Draft.

Prokom announced veteran center Pat Burke(2.10-C) via their official website. It was rumored that Pat Burke wouldn't sign a contract this year as he wanted to stay with his family and spend some time with them especially now that he expecting his daughter to be born in October. Nevertheless he agreed to play for another season with the polish champion Asseco Prokom.

The irish veteran has played in quite a few teams in Europe. In Greece he played for Panathinaikos and Maroussi, then he tried his luck for a season in Orlando in the NBA. Later on he moved to Spain and Gran Canaria for 2 seasons and he spent one more season in Spain playing for Real Madrid. The next 2 seasons he played in Phoenix although he didn't get much playing time and last season he played for Khimky in Russia helping the team in 2nd half of the season and the play-offs. He averaged 7.7 points and 3.7 rebounds in 11 games for the regular season.

Suns guard Leandro Barbosa is not in training camp today in Tucson. He left to return to Brazil, where his mother is ailing.

Barbosa's mother, Ivete, comes to Phoenix each season for an extended stay and he is very close with her.

The Suns' first practice in Tucson is currently underway.

Then there was Danilo Gallinari, who spent much of both practices on the Jerome James Honorary Stationary Bike with what Walsh said he was told was originally a bulging disk in the rookie's back, not the sciatica as one writer speculated in his Tuesday story.

The Wolves instead will sign 11-year NBA veteran Kevin Ollie, who’s more a point guard than the combo guard the team seeks to back up Randy Foye and Sebastian Telfair. Ollie, 35, has played with 10 different NBA teams and spent the past three seasons with the 76ers. He started 23 games for Philly in both the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons and averaged 7.5 minutes to 40 games (no starts) last season.

Also, second-year forward Chris Richard signed his one-year qualifying offer as expected and joined his teammates for a two-hour photo shoot and interview session. He wasn’t present for last year’s media day because he didn’t sign a one-year deal until the day practice began.

After an upset Ruben Patterson was traded to Milwaukee in August 2006, his chances of ever returning to the Nuggets appeared to be near zero. Well, Patterson is back. The swingman, who was mad at being benched in the 2006 playoffs against the Clippers and lashed out at coach George Karl, is one of five free agents invited to Nuggets camp, which starts Tuesday, on make-good deals.

The others are point guards Smush Parker and Mateen Cleaves and forwards Nick Fazekas and James Mays. While Cleaves and Fazekas had secured camp invitations last week, the other three didn’t finalize arrangements until over the weekend.

“I feel good to be back,’’ said Patterson, who was acquired by the Nuggets in February 2006 and lashed out at Karl after he didn’t play in Game 5 of the 2006 first-round series the Nuggets lost 4-1. “I talked to coach (Friday) and he wants me back. I talked to Kenyon (Martin, the Nuggets forward who was his teammate at the University of Cincinnati). Regardless of what happened two years ago, I told (Karl) I’m going to come to camp and I’m going to bust my butt and everything will be good.’’

Although they had until Oct. 31 to do so, the Jazz have exercised the fourth-year option in guard Ronnie Brewer's contract, general manager Kevin O'Connor said Monday at the team's annual media day. "We'll do it now and kind of make him feel like he understands that the work he did this summer is rewarded," O'Connor said, "and the work he did last summer and last year is rewarded."

Brewer took over as the Jazz's starting shooting guard last season and went on to average 12.0 points and 2.9 rebounds. He gained an additional 10 to 12 pounds from last season and weighed in Monday at 235 pounds. "It's good that he has confidence in me and that this organization has confidence in me," Brewer said. "But that doesn't really do anything, what you did last year. It's all about now, so I'm looking forward to this year."

Already under contract this season, Brewer will make $2.7 million in the 2009-10 season. As a third-year player, the Jazz will have the opportunity starting July 1 to sign Brewer to a contract extension, much as they did with Deron Williams this summer.

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers considered taking his team on a tour of the historic Newport mansions, then he realized it might be a waste of time. "For some of my players, their mansions might be bigger,'' Rivers said after the first day of training camp amid the polo pony and sailboat set. "They might not be impressed.''

The defending NBA champions set up camp in Newport on Tuesday, heading about 90 miles south of Boston to get away from the bustle and allow the team to bond. They'll work out for seven days at Salve Regina University, right down the street from a row of former summer "cottages'' like The Breakers, the Vanderbilt Family's 70-room Italian Renaissance-style getaway. "I don't know anybody who lives in a house that big,'' Ray Allen said. "Some of them might think they do.'' The Celtics trained in Rome last year, an experience that the players said helped them bond after an offseason overhaul that introduced a new Big Three and put them on the path to the NBA title. Rivers enjoyed it so much that he encouraged general manager Danny Ainge to find someplace this year, too. "I preferred someplace warm, preferably Florida next to my house in Orlando,'' Rivers cracked, adding that he wanted it to be just far enough away to make driving home inconvenient. Ainge set the team up in Newport, a town more accustomed to the swishing of tennis rackets, polo mallets and the spinnakers of America's Cup yachts. Forward Paul Pierce had never been before, and he said he didn't plan to partake in the scene this time, either. "I'm not worried about the mansions. I'm here for training camp,'' he said. "It's got a regulation court and 10-foot rims. That's all I need.'' The Celtics won their record 17th NBA championship last season, the first after Ainge brought in Kevin Garnett and Allen to team with Pierce in a new Big Three. The June 17 clincher left them with a short summer, and because Rivers told his veterans not to show up at the practice facility until about a week ago, they were a little more out of shape than usual.

But unlike last year when the majority of the roster was new, Rivers has just five new players in camp and all of them are role players. "Last year, we had to teach everybody something new,'' the coach said. "Compared to last year, I think we're further along.'' The notable exception is center Kendrick Perkins, who will be kept out of scrimmages during training camp because of offseason surgery on his left shoulder. "He can run up and down the floor, as long as no one else is running up and down the floor with him,'' Rivers said. Perkins injured his shoulder in Game 4 of the NBA finals against the Los Angeles Lakers and sat out Games 5 and 6. He had surgery July 3, then spent the rest of the summer stretching and working out on a stationary bicycle. On Tuesday, Perkins ran sprints the width of the court with the rest of the team during the portion of practice reporters were watching. Perkins said doctors told him he would be ready to handle contact in practice in about a week. He is shooting for the third exhibition game, on Oct. 11, to get back in uniform. But Rivers said he wanted to hold Perkins out for four exhibition games, meaning he would return Oct. 16. The coach said he wasn't worried about Perkins' availability for the Oct. 28 opener.

Underwood replaces Reed. The Sixers announced yesterday that they have signed free agent Cory Underwood to replace Justin Reed on the training camp roster. Underwood, a 6-foot-10 forward, played his collegiate career at Southern University of New Orleans, finishing in 2003. Last season, Underwood played for current Sixers assistant coach Jeff Ruland on the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the NBA Development League. The Sixers training camp roster stands at 19.

Personally, I think Ben Gordon will be making a huge mistake if he passes on the long-term deal the Bulls have offered him (believed to be approaching $58 million over six years) to sign the one-year, $6.4 million qualifying offer, but the fifth-year guard made it clear Monday night that he won't be a problem regardless of whether he gets the kind of contract he believes he deserves.

The deadline for Gordon to accept the qualifying offer is Wednesday, so he said he will wait until then before making a final decision.

Since he is unsigned, Gordon could have skipped Monday night's media day and Tuesday's two practice sessions. But he showed up at the Berto Center Monday night and said he will be at both practices Tuesday.

http://www.nba.com//news/yao_health_080930.html

The 7-foot-6 center - who turned 28 on Sept. 12 - has missed more than 80 games across the last three seasons with four separate injuries. In 2005-06, he contracted an infection in his left big toe that required surgery, then broke his left foot later. In 2006-07, he broke his right leg. Last February, he broke his left foot in a different place, had surgery and sat out the playoffs. Yao acknowledges that he has to change something, whether it's his workout routine or the number of minutes he logs in games. "I need to learn something from the last three years. Seriously,'' Yao said after the Rockets' first practice on Tuesday. "Maybe I need to be careful with my pregame workout or something, lay down a little bit, not get my body too tired before a game. Let's try some new schedules, put my best shape into the game.''

Coach Rick Adelman said he'll carefully monitor Yao's day-to-day schedule and hold him out of segments of practice to keep him fresh. Yao played 37 minutes per game last season and often resisted when Adelman tried to replace him. "He's such a hard worker, he just runs himself into the ground,'' Adelman said. "He keeps saying he wants to rest, but he never wants to sit out. We're going to try to monitor him as much as we can, be smart in how we use him.'' Yao was averaging 22 points and a career-high 10.8 rebounds when he sustained the stress fracture in his foot on Feb. 26. He recovered enough to play for China at the Olympics, but said his foot was only 70-80 percent healed. His Houston teammates nervously watched his games in Beijing. "You cringe because you don't want to see him fall down,'' said point guard Rafer Alston. "And then he falls, and things like that. Then, he's doing an interview, and he falls over a writer or a camera.''Yao averaged 19 points and 8.2 rebounds in Beijing, leading China to the quarterfinals. "The Olympics was a very good tryout for me to prepare for the Rockets season,'' he said. "Some Chinese fans probably won't be happy, but that's just being honest. It feels great to come out of the injury. I had a good recovery. I feel fresh and ready for next season.''

Houston assistant coach Jack Sikma made two trips to China - one before the Games and one after - to work individually with Yao. Sikma said Yao has lost about 10 pounds and just needs to regain his game conditioning. The Rockets acquired Ron Artest and Brent Barry in the offseason and Adelman hopes that the improved versatility will give Yao more chances to rest - and fewer opportunities to get hurt. Adelman is starting his second season in Houston and also has more confidence now in frontcourt players like Luis Scola, Carl Landry and Chuck Hayes, who can come off the bench to replace Yao. Dikembe Mutombo backed up Yao last season, but Mutombo has yet to sign a new contract. "I'm very comfortable playing two of those guys together and that would help keep Yao's minutes down,'' Adelman said. "We had to play without him last year and those guys had to play, so I think having a versatility, we have some more things we can go to offensively.'' Until then, Yao said he's not afraid to test his foot and go full-bore in practice to rebuild his stamina."The foot feels all right. I can't say it's like brand new, but it's like it's my foot,'' he said. "I can't wait to go, for the first preseason game, the first regular-season game.'' Yao isn't the only Rockets player whose health worries Adelman. Tracy McGrady said Monday that his left shoulder is arthritic and his left knee is healing slower than expected from surgery in the spring. Alston had surgery to repair ligaments in his right ankle and forward Shane Battier had surgery to remove bone spurs in his left ankle. Battier now has inflammation in his left foot that will keep him out at least four weeks."I never had a team where I had four starters have surgery,'' said Adelman, starting his 18th season as a head coach. "That's been one of my major concerns, how these guys are going to come to camp, where they are physically and how we are going to monitor that as we go through this first month.''

The 76ers are expected to announce that Aaron McKie will rejoin the team as an assistant coach. McKie was serving as a volunteer assistant last season before he was traded by the Lakers to Memphis in the Pau Gasol deal.

The Sixers signed free agent Cory Underwood (6-10, 240 pounds), replacing Justin Reed. Underwood played for the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the NBA Development League last season. He was coached by Jeff Ruland, who was named an assistant coach for the 76ers in August, replacing Henry Bibby. The Sixers' roster is at 19. They must get down to 15 for the season.

All along, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey insisted rookie Joey Dorsey would be signed in time for training camp, a confidence that Dorsey’s agent Lance Young shared. Dorsey, however, could not help but agonize over the wait and to be hugely relieved when he made it official Monday morning.

“I was worried,” said Dorsey, who signed a contract that could be worth as much as $3.5 million over four years if the Rockets pick up each of the last two seasons of the contract. “I went through summer league and all offseason without a contract, so I was getting a little worried. They called me this morning and said it was done. I was shaking while I signed it, like, ‘I can’t believe I’m signing.’ ”

In addition to signing Dorsey, the Rockets on Monday officially matched the Charlotte Bobcats’ offer sheet to Carl Landry and signed guard Von Wafer and center Marcus Campbell to the training camp roster.
