Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski announced today that 13-year NBA veteran Aaron McKie has rejoined the franchise as an assistant coach on Maurice Cheeks’ staff. McKie will also have additional duties in player development.

McKie was originally named a member of the Sixers coaching staff back on Oct. 3, 2007. Since he never officially retired as a player, his rights still belonged to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers signed McKie to a contract in order to package him in a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies for Pau Gasol on Feb. 1, 2008. Although he did not appear in a game, McKie spent the remainder of the season on the Grizzlies roster before being waived on May 9, 2008. In 793 career games with 287 starts, McKie averaged 7.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.15 steals in 24.2 minutes per game. He enjoyed his best season as a Sixer in 2000-01, taking home Sixth Man of the Year honors while helping Philadelphia reach the NBA Finals. That same season, he recorded back-to-back triple-doubles at Sacramento on Dec. 30, 2000 (19 points, 14 assists, 10 rebounds) and vs. Atlanta on Jan. 3, 2001 (11 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists).

McKie, who had his jersey retired at Simon Gratz High School in 2002, also starred at Temple University. He finished his three-year career with the Owls tied for sixth on the school’s all-time scoring list and was named Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year as a junior in 1993.

Still on the mend: Center Jason Collins isn't expected to participate in training camp after rupturing the triceps tendon in his right elbow this month.

Collins said he was riding in a golf cart with his brother when a sudden drop and sharp left-hand turn resulted in the cart landing on top of him.

"My brother was driving the cart, and I guess I was in the wrong cart at the wrong time," he said.

Houston's leading scorer said Monday that his left shoulder is arthritic and will require surgery after this season. He also said his left knee is healing slower than expected from surgery in the spring.

McGrady sprained his shoulder against Sacramento on March 24, and wore padding to protect it for the rest of the season. He had surgery in May to clear loose tissue in his shoulder and knee. He said his knee is "probably 75-80 percent" healthy and will take another two months to fully heal.

McGrady said an MRI revealed the arthritis in his shoulder. "That's something I've got to deal with again this season," said McGrady, who averaged 21.6 points last season and was selected third-team all-NBA. "My knee should be ready to go by opening night."

VAREJAO FEELS HEAT — You would think this would've been an easier summer than last year for Anderson Varejao, when he was embroiled in a protracted contract holdout. Last summer, he was constantly in the headlines in America while working out in Brazil. But this summer, he got heat in the media in Brazil for working out in America.

In attempting to treat the serious ankle injury he suffered in January and a quad injury in the playoffs, Varejao opted to skip playing for the Brazilian national team over the summer. The team failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics. Brazilian basketball legend and television commentator Oscar Schmidt ripped Varejao for the decision. ''It was really hard. Everybody wants to play in the Olympics and I am no different,'' Varejao said. ''The media in Brazil did not know what was going on and everybody started to assume I didn't want to play. Oscar Schmidt says something and everybody is going to believe what he says. The good thing is I took care of my ankle.''

Varejao's ankle still isn't 100 percent and he still has some swelling but a summer of treatment and rest has gotten him back into a condition he is comfortable with.

The different approach, McKown added, was more explosive training and less endurance training. Okur also said he was 100 percent healthy after being bothered by back and Achilles injuries going into the playoffs.

"I've been out here the last couple weeks watching [Okur] work out," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "He's had a guy working out with him. I think he wants to do well. "I give him a lot of credit going back two or three years ago. He had a bad first year here, and then next time he learned a lesson to get in shape. I know that always sounds strange when you have to say that and people pick it up and read about it. "That's the bottom line in this business: Get yourself in great shape so you have a chance to succeed."

It's worth noting that Okur averaged 17.0 points, 10.3 rebounds and hit 41.8 percent of his three-pointers after the All-Star break last season. The Jazz can only hope Okur picks up where he left off.

Sam Cassell, after telling coach Doc Rivers throughout the summer that he would be back, made good on the promise yesterday morning by signing a one-year guaranteed contract with the Celtics

The veteran guard now is carrying the torch for all sorts of players - both professional and amateur.

“I’m 38, and I made the All-Star team at 34 - I make the old guys who play at the YMCA proud,” Cassell said. “And if we win another championship, I might even play again. Who knows?” The Celtics clearly don’t mind. “We’ll see, but I’d say yes,” Rivers said of whether the guard, who turns 39 in November, has a lock on a roster spot. “He’s the kind of player who can sit for five games and then come in and play well.

Warriors guard Monta Ellis joined his team for the first time since severely injuring his left ankle last month. He even spoke with the media after the first practice session Monday.Ellis declined to comment about his potential punishment from the Warriors for being injured during a prohibited activity and then lying about it. He also wouldn't talk about anything involving how he injured himself and what he told the team. His agent, Jeff Fried, is scheduled to meet with Warriors management Oct. 8. At that point, Ellis said he would be able to explain himself. "We'll address it next week when my agent speaks with the team," Ellis told reporters. "I want to tell you, but we just have to wait it out and see what they say. When it's time for me to address it, then I'll address it."

Ellis was cleared to talk about his recovery. His left foot was in a cast covered by a sock. He said he still can't put any pressure on it, though surgery to repair his torn deltoid ligament was more than a month ago. He rode around the gym on a four-wheel scooter designed to prevent him from walking on his bad foot. The cart even had a lunch basket in the front, which he filled with bottled water, fruit and a protein bar. "Good to see Monta," Warriors coach Don Nelson said. "I asked him if that was the motorcycle he fell off of." The San Francisco Chronicle last week reported that Ellis was injured in a moped accident. Ellis said he is making good progress in his recovery, but he wouldn't put a time frame on his return. The plan of action, according to the team, is for Ellis' ankle to be immobilized for six weeks, followed by six weeks of rehabilitation and an evaluation. Per that schedule, the rehabilitation phase is expected to begin at some point next week. Despite what he expects to be a grueling rehab, he said he doesn't share the concerns about whether he'll fully recover. He even proclaimed that he, once again, will be the fastest player in the NBA, as he boasted in a television commercial for And1, the shoe company he endorses. "With this type of injury and what I had to go through," Ellis said, "it will probably take a little bit longer and really cause (me) not to come back too soon. I've never dealt with (this injury). But, like I said, the team, Chris (Mullin, the Warriors' executive vice president of basketball operations), everybody in the organization, has been with me 100 percent. We all feel good about it and just move forward. "I know it's going to be hard," he added. "No one said it was going to be easy. But I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get back 100 percent to help this team win."

His lying to the team about what happened apparently hasn't eroded his standing with the franchise. He still could be fined or suspended, but members of the organization all expressed happiness about his being back around the team. Ellis spent practice sitting with Mullin. Afterward, he scooted back and forth across the gym, laughing and chatting with his old and new teammates, confirming reports from members of the organization that he's in good spirits. "It's been great," Ellis said of his relationship with the franchise. "Everybody's being on task, everybody stayed in contact, everybody's on the same page, everybody wants to get past this. You know, they want me back on the court, but at the same time they want me to be 100 percent. So it's been good. They've been supportive and that's what I needed and that's why the process is going the way it's going, so smoothly. They've been terrific."

Whatever trust or money or speed Monta Ellis stands to lose as a result of last month's moped misadventure, his confidence will not be among the casualty "I'm still going to be the fastest guy in the NBA with the basketball after all this," a resolute Ellis said after his arrival in Oakland. The Warriors' franchise-player-turned-cautionary-tale joined his teammates three days into training camp Monday, riding a four-wheeled, scooter-like contraption that couldn't help but serve as a reminder of his offseason follies. As expected, Ellis said he was glad to be back with his teammates and looked forward to re-joining them on the court.

The 22-year-old would not give any more insight into his accident, or his subsequent attempt at a cover-up. Both he and the Warriors are sidestepping the topic until Ellis' agent, Jeff Fried, meets with Golden State officials Oct. 8 and the consequences of Ellis' ankle injury are decided. "I want to tell you (what happened), but I've just got to wait it out and see what they say," said Ellis, who has yet to admit publicly that a banned activity led to his injury. "Everybody's been on task. Everybody's stayed in contact. Everybody's on the same page. And everybody wants to get past this." Though Ellis described his relationship with the Warriors' front office as "great" and said the entire process was going "smoothly," the reality of his injury saga dragging into its second month indicates otherwise. Division already exists within Golden State's brain trust on Ellis' fate. Vice president Chris Mullin coach Don Nelson both prefer that Ellis go unpunished, but the decision is up to Warriors President Robert Rowell.

Rowell issued a statement last week saying he was still gathering needed information, and he is clearly considering all options, including the most extreme - voiding the six-year, $66 million contract Ellis signed just weeks before his accident. There are also serious concerns about Ellis' long-term health, given how speed and agility define his game. Ellis has a reputation for being a fast healer - he came back from knee surgery after high school - but his ability to regain his explosiveness remains unknown. Ellis, who is scheduled to make $11 million this season, declined to put a best-case scenario on his return. Under projections given at the time of surgery, Ellis will remain off his feet for about another week before beginning rehabilitation. Another six weeks of strengthening exercises will follow before he resumes any basketball-related activity, leaving December or January as an optimistic reference. "I can't put a time frame on it," Ellis said. "It's something that you've got to make sure you're 100 percent before you come back. I know (rehab) is going to be hard. No one says it's going to be easy - but I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get back 100 percent to help this team win."

Kendrick Perkins [stats] prepared himself by envisioning the worst following off-season shoulder surgery. He braced for a more delayed return to action than appeared to be the case yesterday, when the Celtics opened training camp with their annual Media Day. Perkins hopes to resume full contact by the second week of camp, before the first exhibition game on Oct. 8 against Philadelphia. “I was expecting the worst,” he said. “I thought I was probably going to be out for a few regular-season games. Even if that’s not what happens, it still (ticks) you off because you can’t just get back to things right away. But that’s why it was such a big decision of whether or not to have surgery. It was the timing of everything, when I would be back.”

There’s still enough concern, however, to keep all concerned on edge this month. Of all the worries a championship basketball team can have at the start of a new season, the precarious health of its starting center is one of the most harrowing. Perkins, two months removed from surgery, is on a slow track to full health by the season opener Oct. 28 against Cleveland.

Perkins knows this part of the process by rote. The center wrenched his left shoulder while battling with the Lakers’ Pau Gasol in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, missed Game 5, and returned for Game 6 in a fragile state, a bad situation for the most physical player on the team. “My shoulder is fine right now. I’ll be all right. I can do all the drills and workouts. I just have to get into the best shape I can get in under the circumstances.” There’s one problem. As Perkins learned after his first shoulder surgery, the more often a player dislocates a shoulder, the more likely it will happen again.“And I don’t want it to happen again, especially during the season,” he said. “I just want to focus, man. The guys are really locked in right now, and that’s where I want to be.”

Kaman said his injured ankle - which contributed to his only playing in 56 games last season - felt good, even after competing for Germany in the Olympics, but that he "will only really know after (he) plays on it."

Smush Parker Has a Chance to Stick:William "Smush" Parker has had his fair share of issues over the past couple of seasons. Talk to most members of the Lakers during Parker's tenure in Los Angeles, and they'll tell you he wasn't exactly the most well liked player in the locker room. Add to that his troubles last year in Miami, and it's hard for most people to understand why the Nuggets would even think about bringing a player like Parker to camp.

Well, simply put, Denver needs help at the point guard position. In addition, they would like that help to come cheap. What that leaves you with is a guy like Parker who intends on getting his career back on track. "Any negative thing that is said is going to hurt my reputation," Parker told HOOPSWORLD. "But that's water under the bridge, hopefully. This is a new start for me here in Denver, and I plan to take full advantage of it." While not without his faults, Parker has put up relatively impressive numbers in the past. It's easy to forget this is a guy who averaged over 11 points and three assists on a pretty good ball club in Los Angeles. Moreover, his 6-foot-4 frame also makes him a potentially interesting fit next to Iverson.

Sniffing around at practice today, it's clear a lot of people around the team are intrigued by what Parker could bring to the table. If Parker has a good training camp, don't be surprised if he makes the active roster when camp breaks. "Our situation is there's a possibility of one more roster spot with Melo missing the first two games (suspension) and Chucky (Atkins) and Sonny (Weems) probably missing," Karl explained. "So there's probably going to be some guys that might help us early. We've always been an eight-man rotation, but in general I'd like to play with an intensity that goes a little bit more into the depth of our team."Parker would like to be a part of that depth Karl referred to. "I feel if I come in here, work hard, play defense -- because that's the main focus of the team this year -- I'll have a good shot of making this team," Parker said." If I do that George Karl will find some room on his team for me. I'm just here to take advantage of my opportunity. (Karl's) system fits right under my belt. Run-and-gun, play defense and go. I'm from New York City and that's what we do." The fact Parker was the very last player off the court today after practice staying over 15 minutes longer than any other player certainly won't hurt his cause He's one to keep an eye on as training camp progresses.

The Denver Nuggets signed guards Mateen Cleaves and William "Smush" Parker and forwards Nick Fazekas, James Mays and Ruben Patterson to their training camp roster Tuesday. Cleaves, a Flint, Mich., native who starred on Michigan State's 2000 national championship team, has averaged 3.6 points and 1.9 assists in 167 games with Detroit, Sacramento, Cleveland and Seattle.

Parker is averaging 9 points, 2.9 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 274 games with Cleveland, Detroit, Phoenix, the L.A. Lakers, Miami and the L.A. Clippers.

Fazekas averaged 4.1 points and 3.4 rebounds in 26 games with Dallas and the Clippers last year, his rookie season. Patterson has averaged 10.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 649 NBA games with the Lakers, Seattle, Portland, Denver, Milwaukee and the Clippers. Mays played four years at Clemson.

Michael Curry was a physical, aggressive defender as a player. So it only makes sense that those same qualities would be on display in his first official practice as the Detroit Pistons head coach. The first-year coach put the team through a three-hour practice this morning that was filled with the kind of physical play he brought to the floor as a player. "Guys really competed, and that's what we talked about last night," Curry said. "We have a lot of drills in which we're teaching. We have a lot of drills where we want to just see them get out and compete."

Speaking of competition, Curry is still planning to have Antonio McDyess come off the bench, with Amir Johnson, Jason Maxiell or Kwame Brown replacing him in the starting lineup. It's too soon to tell who McDyess' replacement will be. It's even tougher to gauge considering Curry uses three different five-man units in practice, each consisting of one or two starters. One of Curry's primary goals is to get this team back to having more of a defensive identity. By no means is that a dig at Flip Saunders. In fact, the Pistons defense statistically was as good - and in some cases, better - under Saunders than his predecessor, Larry Brown. But no matter what those defensive numbers were, defense was no longer what this team was about under Saunders' regime.

And part of that had to do with Saunders' strength as a head coach being on the offensive end of the floor, which was evident by him having the Pistons ranked among the NBA's leaders in a number of categories offensively. Curry is at the opposite end of the spectrum, a solid defender as a player whose acumen on offense is unclear. Defense will be what this team takes great pride in, but Curry also recognizes the need to be solid on offense. "We're going to be really good defensively and offensively," Curry said. "We want to be a team that can win a game, 120-110, or win a game 80-70."

Pfund Steps Down: HEAT GM Randy Pfund stepped down yesterday, citing that the timing was right to explore other opportunities. This one was not hard to read, the HEAT have been very cost conscious recently and Pfund served a real role when Pat Riley was coaching, but now that Riles is strictly an executive it's clear that this was a cost cutting move. The HEAT have named Micky Arison's son Nick to the title of Vice President Basketball Operations, making Pfund's role somewhat redundant between Riley and Arison. Pat Riley has two more years on his deal, a deal he has hinted may be his last in the NBA.

Damon Jones: The Milwaukee Bucks and guard Damon Jones have reached an agreement that will keep Damon at home and not reporting to the Bucks for training camp. Jones was part of the Maurice Williams trade with Cleveland, and it was a peculiar move at the time for the Bucks as Jones did not fit at all with what Scott Skiles was trying to do in Milwaukee. Jones will be paid and continue to work out on his own, according to a press release from the Bucks. Jones is an ending contract worth $4.4 million, and is likely trade bait as the trade deadline nears in February.

Injuries Already Big Story: Yesterday one of the biggest topics was Houston's Tracy McGrady, with the All-Star giving details on his sore knee and arthritic shoulder. McGrady isn't 100% now and it's quite unlikely he may ever be again. With the Rockets 2008-09 already assumed to be on edge because of the injury histories of McGrady and center Yao Ming, it obviously wasn't good news.

However, Houston wasn't the only place to hear the bad stuff. In San Antonio the big talk surrounded guard Manu Ginobili and how the surgery on his ankle would keep him out until December, missing 20-25 games – roughly 12 weeks or so from the day of the procedure. The ligament surgery on his left ankle, following his re-injuring the ankle at the Olympics, was quite detailed. "(Doctors) taught me how they drill through the different holes (in the bone), how they clean it," Ginobili told the San Antonio Express-News. "They were showing me all the tendons, all the ligaments, what was going on. It was a learning experience." In New Orleans, Hornets forward Peja Stojakovic missed practice after having fluid drained from a big toe. He'll be fine.

In Utah, forward Matt Harpring is still out following ankle surgery. However, the good news is his knees – problematic the last couple years – are fine. Harpring had surgery for a bone spur in his right ankle in June, but then developed an infection that required a further hospital. The antibiotics from that stay then made him sick for even longer. Rough summer. In Boston, center Kendrick Perkins should be cleared for full contact drills next week. He had surgery on his shoulder On the plus side, in Portland All-Star guard Brandon Roy expects to participate in all drills on Tuesday after offseason surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. "My knee is doing good," Roy said Monday. "I had this last week to play ... and afterward, there was no soreness. As we go into training camp, we are still going to monitor (my) minutes (but) I'm just excited that the knee is OK." If only San Antonio and Houston (and heck, Golden State with Monta Ellis) could be so optimistic.

Cassell in Boston: Point guard Sam Cassell returned to the Boston Celtics yesterday to again back up the young Rajon Rondo. Cassell said he had other offers but, of course, none of those came from the defending NBA champions. "I think if I put it out there, no doubt about it, I could probably play somewhere else," he said Monday. "Why would I?"

Well, when he puts it that way… But does this make the Celtics a better team? Is Cassell the right choice? Gabe Pruitt and Eddie House are the only other players on the roster who are somewhat capable point guards, though House is better suited for the two. Ray Allen can play the one in spots, but it's not really ideal, especially defensively. Without a doubt Cassell brings leadership and experience to this team, and he absolutely provides some continuity off the bench. However, at times late last season and in the playoffs it seemed as if the Celtics were successful not because of Cassell's on-court play, but despite it. Poor shot selection early in the shot clock, fouls caused by Cassell's inability to stick with younger, quick guards, and some bad passes.

Some of that can be attributed to losing a step and it's simply a reality Cassell and the Celtics will have to deal with. Some of it can also be attributed to the limited amount of practice time Cassell had with his new teammates after coming over from the Los Angeles Clippers following a late-season buyout. With a full training camp under his belt Cassell should fit more seamlessly into the option and be a more reliable backup for Rondo. That said, expect Rondo to carry the load, especially early in the season. The Celtics must ask themselves this question though: If Rondo gets hurt and has to miss some games, how comfortable are they with Cassell running the point?

No Extension for Maxiell? The Detroit Pistons have offered power forward Jason Maxiell a three-year, $15 million extension to his rookie contract. It would kick in for the 2009-10 season. However, Maxiell isn't in a hurry to sign it. And he doesn't have to; the offer will be on the table until October 31st, and next summer he would be a restricted free agent anyway. "We're just talking; there's nothing going on there yet," Maxiell told the Detroit News. "I am not going to focus on that now. Either way, I am coming back, so I just have to get ready for this training camp."

The Pistons will have a new starting power forward this season as they have decided veteran Antonio McDyess will return to the bench. With Rasheed Wallace starting at center and Kwame Brown likely backing him up, Maxiell was originally thought to be that starter, but early indications are it likely will be Amir Johnson. If the starter does prove to be Johnson, Maxiell might be best served to sign the three-year extension. With so many big men likely to get minutes it will be hard for him to put up the numbers that would justify a larger deal deal.

In that same case, if Maxiell declines the deal, he will be banking on the fact he gets enough time to prove to other teams they should make him a serious offer next summer, even though he's restricted. If Maxiell earns the starting job, he should definitely decline the offer. Given starter's minutes he should easily post numbers that show his value to be worth more than $5 million per year. It may not seem like much, but this is a huge decision for Maxiell.

Word came in Monday morning that Ben Gordon would in fact report to the team's media day later that night, and to little surprise he did exactly that. The only clarification that came from Gordon Monday evening was that he still hadn't signed an extension or the one-year qualifying offer."[Wednesday] is the deadline I set for myself, so that's when I play on making on my decision," Gordon admitted to the throng of reporters. "I'm optimistic something can be worked out even though it's come this long."

Bulls GM John Paxson feels the same way about the eventuality of getting Gordon back into the fold officially, though his idea of "something" getting done is likely not the same as Gordon's. "It still is where it's been all summer," Paxson clarified at Media Day, "but like I said the other day we're anticipating that Ben will sign the qualifying offer. "We're still waiting to see if there's a way to come to some resolution, but it's going to be one thing or the other. Ben has until Wednesday to sign the qualifying offer, so he has that option. Until then we have time to talk together to see if there's any common ground."

Paxson admitted that he and Raymond Brothers, Gordon's agent, had minimal discussions on Monday, but that he planned to continue negotiations later Monday night after wrapping up the evening's season-opening media frenzy. As for Gordon, who looked genuinely stressed out and despondent all evening, it seems like he's just ready to put everything behind him and get back onto the floor. "I haven't played basketball in a long time," he admitted, "so I just want to be out there with my teammates for whatever happens." While he won't take part in the team's first official practice on Tuesday, he will be at the Berto Center to be present for the first full day of camp. He'll be signed to at least a one-year deal by Wednesday, at which time he'll join the team in a physical capacity. One thing was clear in talking to Gordon tonight: he wants to get this thing wrapped up just as badly as his employer and his fans. He's just not willing to bend on what he believes his value is to make it happen.
