Patrick looks like a Franks without the hands, and experience of a good blocker...big, slow...not sure he would be better than what we have

Take a risk on Tarell Brown...

By SteelerFan

With our third round selection in the SB Nation Mock Draft, Blitz and I decided to select University of Texas cornerback Tarrell Brown.

Brown's a tremendously gifted athlete who ran a 4.3 on his timing day in Austin this March, but has slipped down some draft boards because of two off-field incidents this past year. That's not something to simply overlook, but in this case, I happen to know a lot about Brown in general, and these incidents in particular.

As SBN's Texas Longhorns blogger, I follow the happenings in Austin very closely, and even have quite a few sources connected to the program. Here's the scoop:

Brown was suspended for the Ohio State game this past September after he and another member of the Longhorns were arrested for marijuana possession late one evening. As it turns out, Brown was mostly a victim of "wrong place, wrong time," and though that doesn't make what happened any less stupid, it's not quite the black eye that you see attached to other athletes in trouble. Brown had another incident this past March - just one day after his pro timing day - which was nearly identical to the last one. In both cases, charges were not filed against Brown, though he's clearly guilty of bad judgment.

The bottom line, though, is that everyone I know connected to the UT program was shocked that Brown ever got in trouble once, let alone twice. They all swear up and down on his character, and expect his problems to be behind him. Everyone that I know who knows Tarrell Brown absolutely adores him as an upstanding young man.

He's been interviewing extremely well with NFL teams, so I don't think you're going to see him slip past the third round during the real draft. And we couldn't let him slip any farther in the SBN Mock Draft, either. I've heard NFL scouts who like him better than fellow Longhorn cornerback Aaron Ross, who's being selected in the first round in virtually every mock draft you see.

If those of us who support Tarrell Brown's character are right, nabbing Brown with the #77 pick is quite the bargain. He'd be a terrific addition to the Steeler secondary.

--PB--

POSITIVES: Explosive cornerback with the ability to shut down opponents. Fluid transitioning off the line, runs downfield with opponents and plays faster than his 40 time. Works well with safeties, locates the pass and quickly breaks to the action.

NEGATIVES: Very quick out of his backpedal and prefers to side-shuffle down the field. Does not always play with his feet underneath him or with balance.

ANALYSIS: Steadily improving cornerback who is rarely challenged by opponents, Brown has shown tremendous skill the past three years. Off-the-field incidents and his foot injury from last year will push him out of the first round, yet he offers starting potential.

PROJECTION: Middle Second Round

Pack won't take Patrick unless he slips to the 7th...he isn't very big for a TE....lord Randy Moss is bigger than he is.

These were a horrid TE class. Chandler wouldn't have been bad. Patrick is smaller, but other TE's like him in the league. The problem is most of them are fast and came from bigger schools. Clearly the media overrated him and we sucked for it.

Weaknesses: Seems to lack ideal conditioning and could stand to loose some weight. Shows good quickness but lacks ideal top-end speed. Is never going to be a seam-stretching weapon in the NFL. He hasn't spent much time working as an in-line blocker and has been more of an H-back throughout his career. Is big, but lacks explosive upper body power to jar defenders.

It's just such a weak TE draft. I don't see the point of taking a TE if he's not worth taking. In my opinion it was either Olsen or nobody. And I wasn't even sold on him.

I wonder if we were contacted by the Browns to get Quinn? If we turned down a second rounder and a possible top 10 pick next year, for a guy we probably could have gotten with that second rounder....l

who is going to take Troy Smith....

If he were a couple of inches taller he would have been a first round pick, IMO.

The Browns said their offer started with pick 12 and they got a bite at 22, so yes, TT had an offer from the Browns.
