I agree to a certain extent. Money is usually the most important factor for free agents. They also tend to look at situation (team direction, playing time, fit, etc.), market size/marketing ability, and weather (less important but seems to be a big deal for some). Minnesota can theoretically offer money and playing time but those last two, however illogical the thinking, will always be hurdles for this franchise to overcome. Which means, of course, that MN will probably have to overpay to get good talent.

If, for example, a theoretical big market, "warm and sunny" city offered a FA a 5 year, $10 million deal, how much more would MN have to offer to "match" in the mind of the player? $12 million for 6 years? More?

If he wants more than the minimum guaranteed, I don't know I sign him.

In the paper today they said that Miami has closed the door on Livingston and have called it a "dead issue." The wolves thought he was gone for sure. Now we are also saying that anything with Livingston is a dead issue right now. I think we were offended by how he treated us, maybe he brushed us off desperately trying to land in Miami or Portland. Now that they have shut him out he probably still hasn't made an effort to get with the wolves and we are done chasing him.

I like the Ollie signing, I think he's a solid 3rd PG for you guys.

I wouldn't worry about Livingston, seems like there's alot of people going nutso over a guy who hasn't been on an NBA floor since his ankle touched the back of his neck. I'd be cautious, and very hesitant to throw a large contract at him.

Although it's a small signing, Ollie really is a good guy to have in the locker room, and is still capable of logging a few minutes at pg. I recall Thaddeus Young and Lou Williams crediting Ollie countless times for their growth last year. He came to work every day during his tenure w/ Philly and did whatever was asked of him. I'm sure he'll have a positive influence on your young guys.

I didn't know that; that's good to hear, those guys both made strides all year last year.

Sounds like the original title of the thread is turning out to be accurate:

The Miami Herald just posted a story reporting that former Clipper Shaun Livingston is ``within hours of joining the Miami Heat.''

The story also indicates that ``The addition of Livingston likely will lead to another significant transaction, with Riley vowing to keep his team from the dollar-for-dollar luxury tax on excessive payroll.

``Among the options for the Heat could be trading the likes of Daequan Cook or Dorell Wright into another team's salary-cap trade exception, possibly with the incentive of also including a second-round draft choice and cash.''

It makes sense if another trade is on the way. We could fit Daequan Cook under our TPE. Would we look at this guy? His next two years are not guranteed, so maybe with a reduction on the MIA pick protection?

Official:

The Miami Heat today put the final touches on a two-year contract with free-agent guard Shaun Livingston.

The expectation from the Livingston camp is that the 2004 Los Angeles Clippers first-round pick will be able to get on the court at some point this season. Livingston, in fact, had been cleared to test his left knee late last season, although he never made it to the court.

The second year of Livingston's contract involves an option, although a decision on that 2009-10 portion of the deal likely would be settled well in advance of next season.

I'd rather give Dorrel Wright a shot

Hopefully Ollie will help Carney too.

I'd rather use someone like Barron, though I doubt it would happen. We already have too many guard/forward types.

I think MIA would rather trade Dorrell too, withtheir SF glut, but our TPE isn't big enough for his salary.

If we got Cook, I'd like to see us move a SG elsewhere. MIA fans say Cook has talent, but is not aggressive enough.

It would be difficult.

TPE's can't be combined, so we need a new one that cover Dorrell Wright. Wright's salary is $2,612,835, but since the matching requirements are 100% + $100,000, we'd need a TPE of $2,512,835 to trade to MIA.

We could obtain this two ways:

1. We could trade one of our players to a team with under the salary cap, and get a straight TPE back. Unfortunately, the only team under the salary cap is MEM. We have several players that are over $2.5 mil, but I don't know if the guys we'd like to trade (McCants), is someone MEM would use cap space on for one year. I suppose we could send out Madsen + cash + a pick to get the TPE, but I think MEM would try to avoid adding salary.

2. We can create a TPE by the difference in price for a trade. A little algebra shows that we'd need to send out, at a minimum $12,164,175 and take back $9,651,340 + a TPE that would be big enough to cover Wright.

a + $2,512,835 = (1.25 * a) + $100,000
a + $2,412,835 = 1.25 * a
$2,412,835 = .25 a
$9,651,340 and $12,164,175

I don't see the $12 mil + package we could send out to create the cap space. Cardinal + Collins + Carney + 1st for $10 mil package? It'd be tough.
