Brent Barry: Defensive Mentor

Post#1 » by jove9 » Thu Oct 2, 2008 1:02 am

Another sign of the looming apocalypse: Brent Barry was teaching Joey Dorsey how to position himself defensively.

Didn't we draft Dorsey because he was supposedly the best defensive player on the best defensive team in the NCAA? And Barry STILL knows more about defense than him?

Wow. Tell you what though, I can't wait to see Barry in cornrows.

Brent Barry wrote:I made Dorsey a little bet... I said,'If you will listen to me in some of the things defensively I’ll show you, you can show me how to cornrow my hair'

well barry isnt someone who any nba player can score on. college players are no where near the nba level of play. in college dorsey is a defensive monster cuz most college teams dont have a dominant big like every team in the west does.

he can still be good in the nba cuz of his size. barry is a professional baller so im sure he knows how to be in a correct defensive post position. i do not know why he is teachin dorsey that tho. but o well, if anyone wants to go all out on this one thats ok but you dont need to.

also, barry did play w/ the spurs for a bit. heard coach popovich talk about his crazy ass defensive schemes, prolly heard it a million times, and prolly got better at defense because of it. hey, after all, thats wat coach pop was tryna do int he first place: trying to make brent barry better at defense, like he did w/ everyone on his team.

Barry played for Pop...so I trust him to do this.

You don't have to be a good defender to understand defense and teach it. Do you thin JVG can guard anyone in the NBA?

quite a poor example you have there, Barry has been in the league how long? In that time i would imagine hes picked up quite a few tips that could help Dorsey take his game to the NBA level

Okay? I think we're in agreement? I thought OP's intent was to say since Barry isn't a great defender himself he shouldn't be able to teach Dorsey defense which is silly because you don't have to be a good defender to teach defense?

You're right. You don't have to be a good defender to teach it. My point is that Dorsey is supposed to be a good defender already. What can Barry teach him that he doesn't already know?

Of course, we've addressed that already indirectly: positioning in the NBA game.

I'm with KevC on this one.

Jove- just because he was the best defender on the best defensive team in the NCAA doesn't mean he knows it all. There's always room for improvement, and who better to learn from than one of Pop's former players? I actually like that Barry is teaching him...it means that Dorsey is willing to learn.

You guys got a steal here....he might not be the best defensive player, but he does what his capable of...

ps. just dont get frustrated like spursfans when his free on the 3pt line, not takin a shot just pumpfaking and driving to the hoop for a miss or passing it off...hesitates to shoot sometimes when his free.

Barry looked good tonight. Made some big 3s and forced a few steals down the stretch. This is a guy that knows when the game is in the balance and what to do to win it. Can't ever underestimate that. There was a point in the 4th where you could see turn it up and force a few steals. Then he calmly made a big 3. As long as he is healthy he'll be really good for us. Adelman I expect will keep his minutes down.
