What about Jake Peavy?
Seems like he could be available this offseason. Haven't seen him pitch yet. Is he good enough to replace AJ should he decide to walk? If yes, what sort of a price would he come at?

Re: What about Jake Peavy?
Yes, Peavy is much better than Burnett. And if it took several of Arizona's top 10 prospects (in a deep system) to land Dan Haren, you can be sure that the Padres would be looking for a package like Travis Snider, Brett Cecil, Justin Jackson, Ricky Romero, and a couple B-level guys. As a basement price.
Toronto can't afford to gut its system for a single player, no matter how good that player might be.

I agree to a extent now if we are talking about Hanley Ramirez or Pujols I would trade anything for them. Jake Peavy would take a mountain of talent to get he's a solid starter and he and Doc would be a great duo. Easily the 2 best in baseball imho. Peavy to Toronto is a pipedream again

Re: What about Jake Peavy?
I agree; Peavy and Halladay would be the top-2 in baseball. The problem is that we would then have over $50m/year (and escalating quickly; Peavy and others will see their salaries jump in 2010) tied up between Peavy/Halladay/Wells/Rolen/Ryan, close to $13m/year due to Overbay and Rios, and no farm system of which to speak...again.
It would be crazy (IMO) to expect even a staff with Peavy -- sans Marcum, and possibly McGowan -- to exceed the level of the '08 crew, which was 61 runs and 10 points of ERA+ better than any other AL team. Likewise, it's hard to imagine that the internal improvement by the hitters would provide the additional 40+ runs necessary to truly compete, and there would be no money in the budget to chase anyone of significance...in 2009, the team might be in the $105-110m range, but thereafter it would be hard to keep payroll below $120m even without any major free agents.
Peavy's great, but unless both Marcum and McGowan return to full strength (with is unlikely, given their injuries) Peavy isn't enough to make this a playoff-bound club, but he is enough to break the team budget and put to bed any notions of building from within.

Re: What about Jake Peavy?
Peavy's contract:
2009: $8M
2010: $15M
2011: $16M
2012: $17M
2013: $22M team option
That's $56 million over four years, excluding the option year. The offer to Burnett was $54 million over four years, so if that offer was genuine, then there's little difference between acquring Peavy and re-signing Burnett purely from a contractual standpoint. If Ricciardi were prepared for AJ to accept that offer, then I don't think Peavy's contract would be any more or less crippling.
The main difference, obviously, is it will take every prospect the Jays have to acquire Peavy. Snider, Arencibia, Cecil, you name it. The Jays might be able to soften the deal if they took Khalil Greene's contract (only signed for one more year), but even then it will be a lot. It would take at least 6-7 prospects and probably absorbing Greene's contract to get it done, and that's not going to stop another team from potentially matching/bettering it.
If the Jays could land Peavy without giving Snider, then I would add just about everyone else in the system. Lind, Cecil, Arencibia, Jackson, Romero, Mills, Ahrens....you name it. Prospects are a crapshoot, especially non-elite ones. Peavy is another Halladay signed to a affordable price (given the market), and keeping Snider means the team still has a breakout young star on the horizon. However, the chances of acquiring Peavy itself is a long shot; acquring him without giving up Snider would is beyond a pipedream.
Very nice idea, one I've actually thought about (Peavy/Greene), but the chances are slim and none, especially if JP is still here. A better option might be going after someone like Matt Cain. It would take a lot less and we'd be dealing with a dolt of a GM in Sabean (though JP isn't Einstein either).

My whole-hearted support for any trade ideas involving Brian Sabean. I'd love to see Rios/Cain redux, but Sabean's love for all things Randy Winn and Fred Lewis' decent season might preclude that.

Sub-3.00 ERA in four of five seasons, WHIP tends to be below 1.20, good for a strikeout per inning. Playing in Petco definitely inflates his numbers to a degree (though his park-adjusted ERA numbers are still pretty tasty), but that's really the only knock on him. Peavy's a tremendous pitcher...nothing overrated about him.

I agree 100%, Peavy is a Cy Young winner and a amazing pitcher. The guy has really good stuff and I would take him over AJ in a nano second. If you had Peavy and Doc your looking at Toronto's own Pedro and Randy Johnson tandem.
I just don't see Jake here it would be hella nice but I don't see it unless like Schadenfreude says we kill the farm system for him and I don't want to go through more terrible years.

Re: What about Jake Peavy?
Peavy is arguably the best pitcher in Baseball. Definitly top 5 if not the best.
He had an amazing year 2 years ago, and a great season this year. He just didn't get run support, which is why his record wasn't stellar this past season.

The comments from his camp pretty much rule out any chance of him coming here.

Link? I mean why would he rule us out? Unless we are lowballing which I don't see why we would. The guy is a top 10 pitcher in the game today. He would easily be 20 win pitcher and sub 3.00 ERA guy with 200 strikeouts.

Derek Lower would be a downgrade from Burnett.

It's not in stone, but his agent basically said that there are only certain teams to which he would accept a trade, and that he would prefer to play in the NL over the AL. Also, since he doesn't want to play in NY, i get the impression that he really would hate to play here as well.

Re: What about Jake Peavy?
Just curious why he hates NY? I mean he plays in Shea Stadium when he has to face the Mets. Sounds like some BS to me. I think Jake just wants to be in the NL is all

Re: What about Jake Peavy?
We wont be able to do much this offseason unless Ted has some change of heart. Paul and JP have made it clear that spending more isnt an option. Maybe signing Burnett.. or best case we find a team to take BJs contract and use that money and a tiny bit to open up for Peavy or make a better push for Burnett
