The Schenn Effect

Post#1 » by RaptorsBoy » Wed Oct 1, 2008 6:59 am

Man, Luke Schenn can play hockey. He can hit, is a good decision maker, and seems to be able to score. The main question now is should he be on our opening night roster. As much as I want him to be, the leafs have a history for rushing defencman and killing their careers, but I think Schenn is an exception. However his true test will come against Detroit and then i guess we can talk about him being NHL ready.

I'd much rather keep Schenn in the CHL this season. We really don't need him up with our big club as we already have a glut of d-men. There's absolutely no reason to rush him into the NHL...we're headed towards the bottom of the standings this year. Let him play in the CHL, and try him up in the NHL next season.

I mean let him play out another season with Kelowna and see where that takes him. Hopefully he plays the first allowed 9 games (I believe it has something to do with a year being shaved off his contract) here and then gets sent down. I don't see the need to try and throw in him into the fire this early, but then again you never know if Schenn is one of those types that doesn't need years to develop.

yeah, if he plays more than the nine games he loses that year, so a.) the leafs pay him while in junior if he's sent down, and b.) they lose a year of him with the team.

Makes no sense why he's here right now, I'd rather him actually play with confidence in the CHL and try and work on his offensive game more down there. That's what I'd like to see. Nothing wrong with his D.

i don't know if Luke is or ever will be a good offensive dman, if i were to send him down, it would be so he learns how to win as a core piece of the puzzle, whether that's in the world juniors or the WHL. However, that's a moot point right now and is successful so far as a maple leaf

I get the feeling that the Leafs will release him to the junior program, Not sure but I do believe Burke commented on that.

If he does then we would lose a year of pro eligibility on his deal as well as have to pay him pro salary for playing in major junior

In have a different opinion on how to handle rookies when a decision needs to be made about keeping them with the big club or not.

First of all, where the club is in the whole scheme of things needs to be considered. The Leafs are a project, so playing Schenn is not going to impact on the chances of making the playoffs, good or bad. The Leafs can afford to invest in giving Schenn lots of PT, especially since his play hasn`t hurt them whatsover. Frankly, they are a better team when he is in line up, which is saying something.

If he is not hurting the team with his play, the team is overall better defensively with him then without him, he has composure and can deal with the physicality of the NHL game, then there is nothing major junior hockey can do for Schenn at this point in his career. Winning a gold medal at the junior`s would have been nice to add to his resume and he would have dominated had he been healthy and could have played, but he wasn`t going anywhere, especially when he is playing 20+ minutes a night for an NHL team.
