What an impressive play by Patrick!!
Hey yo!
I´m really impressed by the one handed wicked dunk that Pat threw down last night.
He really showed much more athletic ability than I expected from him: He outran Dalembert, jumped off from just outside the protected zone, catched the ball midair and threw it down in just one motion.
Great speed, jumping ability, space awareness and eye-hand coordination. It was the kind of play that you could expect from a SG/SF rather from a C. I can´t think of many bigmen aside KG and maybe Chandler that could finish that way.
I think we all could agree that Perk would never have finished that play in such a colourful way. I'm not saying Pat is better than Perk but he just surprised me with his natural gifts.
We can agree we have a legit project of an athletic 7 footer in the making. He´s raw but he has some tools.
Any thoughts?
Kind regards.

Re: What an impressive play by Patrick!!
We have been hearing nothing but negative stuff about him for the past two years, so I was pleasantly surprised yesterday. His length on the defensive end is just what we need off the bench. He is also very athletic, can rebound the ball, block shots, so he is the perfect fit for this team. Offensively he doesn`t seem to have a great feeling around the basket but has the potential to develop into a solid center. That pass to Miles was excellent also...
I couldn`t be happier about this addition...22 year-old 7 feet centers don`t really grow on trees...

He looked great, 10pts, 8rbds, 2off, 3blks. That is a great stat line. He has skill, I wanted us to draft him when he came out. I am glad we didnt but I am now glad we have him with no risk and all reward.

He was one that really stood out for me, but I have to tell myself it is only pre-season. However, as birdman said, with all the negative stuff, this is certainly nice.

I was very pleased with his game/effort yesterday. Remember he was just 20-21 last year when all these questions about effort/heart surfaced. That's very young. Now he is in a better environment with KG to answer to. We might have something on our hands, we might not. But he could not be in a more perfect situation.

That was a pleasant surprise. I was like,

Nice to see St. Patrick and Sir William feasting above opponents at the rim.

Re: What an impressive play by Patrick!!
Perk is a beast, makes his living on defense, and he's worked very hard to build an offensive game. I can't help think that many of the things we don't like about Perk, POB showed positively last night. Good hands. Good passing. Soft touch around the basket. But POB isn't a beast, and we'll need to see what happens when he's up against Howard or Shaq or Bynum.
So we seem to have two natural Centers, but very different ones. It's going to be a very interesting board this year, those wanting Perk to start because of defense, against those wanting POB to start because of offense.
But, it looks like we've got two Centers. After years of seeing train wrecks like Candy, Ratcliff and Pollard on the depth charts as backup, we've got a guy we could reasonably expect to back up Perk. A guy with health that we could reasonably expect to be available.
Was so excited with the game last night, I bought tickets to the Saturday game against Houston. If he plays, Yao is going to be a pretty good test-indicator for POB. My wife being Chinese and of course a fan of Yao, I managed to convince her that making a weekend out of the game was a good idea (7 hour drive to Manchester)

Everytime POB caught the ball or grabbed a rebound, I couldn't help but think of Blount.
The guy has great hands and it is the first thing I look at in a center.
Did you guys see our 3rd center, Scal, he stole the ball 2 or 3 times and lost it 5 times.

He looked surprisingly good. I was saying after the scrimmage I was surprised Don Nelson gave up on him - now..I am even more surprised. I think DA pulled a fast one with this move..if this first game is any indication.
With his length and mobility he really doesn't have to be that good - but he does have some skill.. I think we are in good shape.

The "highlight" of the game for me was when he somehow managed to get a steal then turned the ball over after 2 seconds, got it back again and immediately turned it over again.

There has been a 2 year debate on the GSW boards with some saying POB sucks, and a lot of us saying he was never given the CHANCE to suck. Your guy, G Davis got more min last year than O'Bryant got in 2 yrs...and that's a rd 2 vs a lotto pick. Nelson and staff not only failed to use POB....they barely bothered to unwrap the package to see what's there. In the D league he was typically around 10 reb, 2-3 blocks. In his rare garbage time minutes with GSW it seemed he EASILY got a few boards and a block or 2...plus could shoot at 15-20 ft. He has quite a bit more talent than Hawes or Petro...who DO play, and all that keeps him from beating out Perkins is that his 2 yr in the NBA he was just trained to be a spectator.
I LIKE Don Nelson, but he's why GSW has seen near nothing from 3 drafts. He irrationally jumps to some conclusion..or a lazy excuse..and just ignores the whole notion of developing and deploying his young talent. Perovic and Lasme git even less of a look than POB....ironic in that the glaring weakness of GSW was rebounding and Diogu,Lasme,O'Bryant and Perovic all had the potential to help solve that.
So....the Celtics got a gift. Maybe not quite like us giving you guys Parrish

CENSORED... No comment.

Re: What an impressive play by Patrick!!
Where is the good hands stuff coming from. The one thing I noticed last night is two times during getting a rebound O'Bryant bobled the rebounds just like Blount did.
I don't think O'Bryant is a natural rebounder since his hand-eye coordination can't be that great if he bobles rebounds. He does however have a lot of tools.
Perk doesn't get a lot of minutes on this team, that's one thing to remember. O'Bryant should get his chance if we can convince Doc to give minutes to him instead of going small ballz.
I agree fully with Dave. We have two natural Centers... but they are both opposite natural Centers in the spectrum of defensive ones.
Patrick looked kinda lost and didn't seem to have a natural mind for the game last night but by sheer combination of size, length, athletisim, and skill.. he got plenty of rebounds, blocks, and mechanical but in the end successfull baskets [alley oop when Dalemburt didn't care aside]. Patrick is also a thiner type Center. Perk is a massive man with little skill and no athletisim but through hard work has become a great one on one defender and a great defender during the pick and rolls. Through hard work and basketball know-how he gets rebounds, blocks, and just awkward points.
Another example of Patrick's lack of basketball know-how is he got an offensive rebound that faded away from the basket and picked it up.. the nearest team-mate was at least as far as teh 3 point line away. What does he do? He goes into two opposing defenders who are standing at the basket that the ball got away from, does the same attempt mechanical one hand shot he did all night while a third defender was behind him who he beat the rebound too... and dispite all 7 feet, long arms gets pwned on his shot attempt... if he had sense about him he could of just passed it to his teammate out at the 3 line and wait for the offense to set up or passed it off and attempt to get in rebounding position.
That said everything that is wrong with O'Bryant is something he can learn to correct. We **** have 2 Centers. Amazing. Hopefully O'Bryant is a fast learner so Doc will give him minutes.

Re: What an impressive play by Patrick!!
I think most people watching last night realize that as much as Big Baby and Leon Powe contributed last year what we really needed was another center.
I am not convinced that POB is any good. But he is big and that makes him a better option than Leon or Big Baby already. When Perk comes back he should dominate the minutes at the C position. Baby and Powe will have to duke it out for the 12-14 mpg that KG is on the bench. And it looks like Miles might get most of those minutes in the second half of the year.

"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

I'm really pulling for POB. I think he can help us and couldn't believe that he was in our camp before we signed him. He was the most impressive player for us last nignt, IMO.
Some people don't seem to understand the situation POB was in at G.S. He was on a team where their coach loves small ball. You can't judge POB from his 2 years at G.S. He never got a chance.

Yeah, that was awful. Scalabrine is a likable guy, but there is no way he should be in the NBA. Scal hasn't improved at all since he has been in this league. The guy kept on throwing the ball away like he was a nervous rookie. Four turnovers in 15 minutes, 0-4 from the field.

He reminded me of Tyson Chandler with the dunk. Same build but a little shorter. Man I think we got a steal. Isnt his contract a two year deal with a team option?

...I think POB is smart enough to work hard the next 2 seasons in order to get paid...but I question his dedication to the game beyond that--if the guy doesn't have a passion for playing the sport and views it as a job, I worry that a big contract will lead to a Blount-esque decline in effort...
..fortunately, that scenario is 2 years away...
