Baylor To sue Clippers! Wow!

Post#1 » by DerickG » Thu Oct 9, 2008 6:30 pm

Sources with knowledge of the situation said that Elgin Baylor had been working without a contract since the early 1990s, having been told that one was not necessary.

Baylor is gearing up for a battle against the Clippers, hiring attorney Carl Douglas and employment law specialist Alvin Pittman.

"Elgin gave 22 years of his life to the Clippers and it's regrettable they are trying to put him out to pasture in this way," Douglas said.

Douglas acknowledged that there "is a dispute over the circumstances of his [Baylor's] separation" with the Clippers. They are trying to get the matter resolved informally. If that doesn't happen, Douglas said they will "leave our options open."

The drama never ends this team. I can't believe that Elgin would be working without a contract for so long.

Yeah that's a bit weird. o.O To be honest though I think he should be happy that he's been able to stick around long enough with the sub-par work he's done for the team...

Yeah, this is really a headscratcher. Why would the organization allow this and why would Elgin continue to work without a contract? Sounds like there are some holes.

Sounds like there's a lot more going on behind the scenes the public aren't aware about.

Why wouldn't Baylor get this handled years ago. You don't work as a GM with out a contract, and it's very disrespectful for an organization to not even offer a hall-of-fame player a contract and he works for you for over 20 years.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

Apparently, he's only worked with them for 10 years or so because he wasn't under contract.

I mean, who's stupid enough to do that? And now he's complaining and forcing litigation?

I'm not sure what the issue is anyway, it's not like they weren't paying him.

And even without a contract he worked longer than most GM's- he was the GM for over 20 years. It's not like GM's get 30-year contracts.

It would be nice for them to negotiate some sort of parting gift (since the term 'buyout' is not applicable here0 for his time with the Clips. But they obviously wanted to go in a different direction.

Agree with max's premise. Clippers will probably end up shelling out some kind of settlement.
But they did go in a different direction several years ago.
If Baylor was playing some sort of crucial role in the past few years, it surely is difficult to see what that role was. Impossible to see, actually.
It would be interesting what basis his lawyer thinks there is for this lawsuit.
