OT: Gerald Green Dallas vs Chicago

Post#1 » by Rocky5000 » Fri Oct 10, 2008 3:27 am

Green scored 18 points (7-11) in 20 minutes and the Mavs won. Of course his offense was never really a problem, it was his defense and rebounding. He only had 1 board all game....Also 1 steal, 1assist, and 1 block giving him the rare Quadruple Single. I wonder if he will stick in Dallas and get any playing time this year. I didn't see the game, can anyone fill me in on if his defense and ball handling looks any better?

Offensively he wasn't forcing things, was taking set shots and jumpers that were within the flow of the offense.
His ball handling wasn't really on display seeing as most of the time he was catching and shooting or finishing on the break. It has been reported to be a bit better, but I doubt Gerald ever becomes a good enough ball handler to make giving him the ball and asking him to score a worthwhile idea...he's at his best when he's getting open set shots and being run off screens and picks, not when he has to create for himself.
Defensively he was as active as I've ever seen him. He had a pretty impressive block, and while he had his signature lost moments, he generally looked pretty good on that end.

All in all a good game for Gerald, he needs to put a few together if he's going to earn any regular minutes.

His offensive was always a problem too. He has no mid range game, can't get to the line and cant score in traffic. He can't creat his own shot and can't score off the drible. He can only score when left open.

His understanding of the game is bad and he is too soft.

Yes, good to hear from #1 GG fan, GG5.

Any chance you've settled on a new binky who plays for the Celtics? Sir William Walker perhaps?

I've been busier than I'm used to. I just started my freshmen year at UMichigan and it's taken some time to adjust to the workload. I miss being able to go entire weeks without doing anything in high school, compared to here where it seems I can't go multiple hours without having to work on something.

I already had a new binky with the Celtics, but no one ever says anything bad about Rondo so I never have to bother defending him. I am a big Walker fan though, I've followed him since his high school days (if you haven't noticed, I tend to be enamored with high upside athletes...) and was pretty ecstatic when the Celts drafted him. He's easily my favorite player on the team right now, and I'm sure he'll have his ups and downs, so I'll be here ready to defend him. That said, neither he nor Rondo can ever or will ever replace Gerald.

I haven't checked it yet, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Dallas board had a GG thread that looked an awful lot like the POB thread we have going.

Gerald's got plenty of time to develop still.

It's always amazing when people count out players like Green or Telfair, before they're 25.

The whole NBA setup around very small roster sizes rules out players like Green from the standpoint of one team investing enough time to develop him. Unlike baseball and hockey where extensive minor systems are in place, the NBA essentially has no minor league system as the NBADev League rules require a player under contract with an NBA team to be counted in the 15 man roster. So unfortunately the players with a long learning curve will get bounced around a long time before they learn enough to stick.

We have the same issue now with Pruitt, we might have to bail on him because of 15 man roster, and no way to assign him to a minor league affiliate.

I'm not sure who the current system helps, as it doesn't seem to favor players or teams, in fact it seems to hinder players and teams. Worst of all worlds IMO.

I say good luck to Gerald, I was always rooting for him while he was here. I never understood the people that hated on him so much, and still don't. It was a shame he didn't develop soon enough to contribute much to the C's, but he's still pretty young, not everyone has the same learning curve and it was quite obvious his was going to take a while. Doesn't mean he'll never get there though.

Awww, I miss these Gerald Green threads. Not much defending to do without greener pastures around though. :)

Pruitt because of defense (after the Rockets game)>>>G$ IMO. It's hard to imagine GG ever playing with the intensity on both ends to make it. I hope that I'm wrong.

The kid needed the college years and the coaching that went along with it.

I come around to defend Gerald....there hasn't been much said around here about him lately, so I haven't been around much either.

And don't worry about Gerald getting cut by the Mavs, there's been nothing but positive reviews out of Dallas.

They both career backups, i.e. busts, considering the hopes people had when they entered the league.

Missed that - he was suspended over the past few days for the gun incident when he was a Celtic. Do you have a link to the new arrest?
