Miller Happy To Be A Sixer

I think a more accurate statement would be to see whether Miller's career last season was a fluke or not and whether or not he and Brand and the rest of the team mesh well together (he didn't last time he played with Brand in LA). Then, its up to Miller and his agent to agre to something reasonable before the trade deadline. If they don't agree, Stefanski has to make a decision and it would likely be the smart move to trade Miller. He will be 33 this season. Any extension beyond two seasons is asking for trouble. PGs decline drastically by the time they hit 35 - this applied to Payton, to Stockton, to Cassell, to Kenny Smith, etc. Hardly any PGs played at the same or similar level at 35 and Miller isn't likely to be the exception to the rule. If he still looks great after 2 years, they can extend him another two, but to give him 3 or 4 year extension now is borderline suicidal no matter how great he might look this season.

Since so many seem to believe Miller's gone after this season, just wanting to bring this back. He's needed for our scoring to flow. Andre Igua's not been a great shot creator, and last year, Miller was often the best offensive (passer/scorer) player on the court for us. Even with Miller's scoring the team often went through scoring droughts for large chunks of time. Hopefully things change for us this year with Brand's addition. Since so many of the guys are so young and working on their shooting and mechanics in the off-season, we'll see what happens. I for one believe we need him for the next year or two as a mentor for Lou Will, and would be disappointed to see him leave after the season.

Safe to say Sixers don't intend to let Miller walk without replacing him with another NBA quality PG. We don't need Miller for our scoring to flow, but we do need a solid PG as do most NBA teams - exceptions are teams like Lakers, with Kobe, and Cleveland with LeBron or Miami with Wade. Maybe Houston with T-Mac. If we lose Miller, we need to replace him with a guy who can efficiently run an NBA offense. There is no doubt about that. Can Williams become that player? I'm not sure. Can Ivey? I doubt it. So be it the draft, trade or free agency, we'll have to get someone. But it makes no sense to give a long term extension to Miller unless he continues stellar play and even then, there is a huge risk in extending him beyond 2 seasons.
