I was a fan of Lovie when we hired him, and while we micromanage every decision he's made, I think the Bears have been quite good under Smith especially given the offensive talent on the roster.
2004 - 5-11 (given where he started from, who cares?)
2005 - 11-5 (turns around the team in one year with an excellent season)
2006 - 13-3 (obviously an awesome season with a superbowl appearance)
2007- 7-9 (team absolutely decimated by injuries as multiple pro-bowl caliber players are out or playing through significant injuries)
2008 - 3-3 (3 heart breaking losses, but most people predicted this team would suck balls, so 500 exceed expectations of preseason and we could state we might be playing better than that record)
Bear in mind, I'm not sure if there was ever a point you could say this team had elite talent either. Certainly never on offense (or even close). We've probably had elite defensive talent when everyone is healthy and clicking, but Harris has never stayed healthy for long stretches, Urlacher has been banged up for long periods, and Brown has been out for the whole season a couple of times.
I think people often look at the little picture too much with Lovie and when he leaves, I think there's a good chance things will get a lot worse.
