A heart attack at 19... kind of makes you wonder if he was taking a little extra something to improve his performance. The heart doesn't take lightly to that sort of stuff. R.I.P.

Where'd you see it was a heart attack? Doesn't say it in that article.

RealGM Staff Report - New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather regretfully announced today that forward Alexei Cherepanov passed away during a game in Russia on Monday evening. Cherepanov was 19 years old.

The Barnaul, Russia native was originally the Rangers’ first round choice, 17th overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

"We are extremely saddened by the tragic passing of Alexei," said Sather. "On behalf of the New York Rangers organization, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family. Alexei was an intelligent, energetic young man, with tremendous talent and an extremely bright future."

Cherepanov is believed to have suffered from a heart attack

There are videos on youtube showing him being carried off the bench. The arena didn't even have a stretcher there.

Someone needs to do an investigation into his death. If the ambulance had been there, it could have saved his life.

Quote from the tsn article:
It is not clear exactly how long it took for Cherepanov to be transported from the rink to the hospital but one source in the arena told TSN it was, "probably 15 or 20 minutes."

There are also questions as to whether defibrillators at the arena were in good working order, though no further details are available.

Those 15 to 20 minutes to get him to the hospital were huge. This all could have been prevented had proper precautions been taken.

An investigation is going to be done:

Anyone think this might change NHL players minds to go over and play there?

Ambulance wasn't even there; had to be called in. I heard it took them about 45 minutes in total from the moment he collapsed to get him to the hospital. Unbelievable. RIP.

That's absurd that there wasn't even an ambulance present.

This is one of those senseless deaths that could have been avoided. The NHL needs to look into this

I'm sure the NHL will, but right now, the Russians are. Good thing the NHL is smart and had defibrillators that worked at the arena when Jiri Fischer collapsed.

Think of what would have happened had there not been an ambulance in Buffalo when Richard Zednik got a cut to the carotid artery.

Yeah all those injuries should be avoided. In pro sports things happen you need mesures to counter them. It's a sad day no doubt in the sports world. 19 and dead I mean wow, I am 25 and even I am floored.

I can see the Russians trying to stop their players from going to North America to play. I wonder what "Grapes" (Don Cherry) is going to say about it this Saturday.

It is a sad day in the sports world, but the sad thing about it, ESPN didn't say a word about Cherepanov. Pretty pathetic on their part.

I don't see the Russians trying to stop their players from coming over to the NHL. The NHL has defibrillators in every building that work. I'm sure the ambulances they have at each game don't leave before it is over. They have physicians who attend every game that have to be within 4 rows of the team benches and must have a clear path to the benches. If anything, this will hurt the KHL. Russian players might want to come to the NHL more now and players might rethink heading over there for the money (the money that won't exist within a few years).

Wow ESPN are tyrants I mean if it were a collage baseball, football or even something else you would have heard about it. I am begining to think ESPN hates hockey or something. Anybody know if the Rangers honored Alexei in anyway before one of their games?

No idea, I don't know if they've been at home since.

And ESPN loathes hockey. Now that Barry Melrose is gone, there's no point to bring it up in their mind. They have a new guy that's never on. Steve Levy, John Buccigross and Linda Cohn are the only hockey fans there. There was nothing about this or Savard getting fired. NBA preseason gets a good amount of talk, and the NFL of course needs to be dissected every day of the week otherwise the country will slip into a black hole.

I haven't watched any ESPN since yesterday afternoon, I can only imagine how that Red Sox comeback is being covered.
