Hmm. Closer and a clutch bat (Manny). I think those should be our top 2 priorities. I like Sabathia, sure. And we're just starting our offseason, so I'll let Omar work his magic before saying anything definite...

Re: mets prepared to bid for sabathia
On one hand I think of having CC and Santana going back to back and just dream of the possibilities. Having two lefties that you know will giving you innings and a great chance to win every time there out is amazing. On the other hand I envision another amazing collapse adding another huge piece to the puzzle.

Re: mets prepared to bid for sabathia
We can use that money on areas of need, including the pen and for Manny (or another power bat).
Sabathia is not on top of the list as a need (plus he stinks in the playoffs).

Re: jake peavy
It would probably take Pelfrey and Martinez, a price that is way to much for us.

Re: jake peavy
Yeah, I didn't think Peavy was realistic for us even before our offseason began. I'm just happy the Yanks weren't on his 'approved' list of teams he'd waive his no trade clause for. I hope CC sticks to his guns about being a West Coast guy as well.

Peavy 'Hates' New York?
20th October, 2008 - 11:41 am
Newsday - Jake Peavy is increasingly likely to be traded by the Padres, but it is equally unlikely that he will end up in New York.
"Jake strongly prefers the National League, and it would take major enticement to get him to agree to go to any American League club," Axelrod e-mailed. "He has obviously had a lot of success in the NL and feels very comfortable there. Also, he is a pretty good hitter, and he views that as an advantage.
"We have not been approached on any specific team, but have given the Padres an idea of the teams to which Jake would consider going. They are definitely being proactive on this and seem to really want to make it happen."
The Braves, Cardinals and Brewers are believed to be among the teams that both possess the young talent necessary to land Peavy.
One official from another team said this past week that Peavy, who was born and still lives in Alabama, "hates" New York anyway.

On Loudmouths tonight, Schein and Carlin talked about the Mets preparing to go after Fuentes...
Schien: "Why go after Fuentes at 13MM, when you can go after K-Rod at 15MM?"

Mets Want Lowe, Fuentes?
24th October, 2008 - 4:34 pm
New York Post - The Mets are reportedly targeting both Derek Lowe and Brian Fuentes as free agents signings this winter.
New York's top two needs are largely considered to be starting pitching and closer.
Lowe, 35, has made at least 32 starts and won at least 12 games in each of the past seven seasons.
Fuentes is expected to make between $36-$39 million over three years.

Matt Holiday, anyone? It seems the Rocks want to deal him before his contract is up in a year...

Id love to get Holiday, but the cost of getting him would be to much. I mean after the Santana deal we really dont have that many prospects left. We got Martinez and what else? Im sure Murphy would garner a lot of interest around the league, but do we want to give him up?

Re: METS OFFSEASON NEWS: FA TARGETS
i also think well resign ollie for 4-5 years maybe around prob around 60-65...seems steep but reasonable at the same time i guess. i think well bring pedro back on an incentive laden contract. its gunna be intresting despite what people think we def have some movable pieces(niese and fmart for example might land holliday) not that id be willing to do that

Re: METS OFFSEASON NEWS: FA TARGETS
some quick updates:
ESPN's Buster Olney wrote in his blog this morning that the Mets are probably not willing to go past three years for Francisco Rodriguez or any reliever.
10:03am: More Mets chatter from Joel Sherman of the New York Post. He says the Mets and Rays have had preliminary discussions about Edwin Jackson and Andy Sonnanstine. The Rays have some interest in Aaron Heilman, though the Mets would need to give more.
Sherman believes the Mets' interest in Ibanez is minor, and Carlos Delgado or Ryan Church would have to be dealt first.
9:45am: The Mets are prioritizing pitching this winter, based on articles by Mike Puma of the New York Post, Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News, and Ken Davidoff of Newsday. Let's dig in!
Puma says the Mets have Scott Boras clients Oliver Perez and Derek Lowe on the radar. Perez offers the benefit of familiarity, though he's not likely to sign quickly. Ken Rosenthal says the Mets would probably do $12MM a year for Perez, but Boras will want more. Rubin notes that Lowe is doubly attractive to the Mets for his closing experience.
Rubin lists the Rockies, Cardinals, Cubs, and D'Backs as potential trade destinations for Aaron Heilman. The Rays have also been connected to Heilman.
Davidoff mentions Omar Minaya's Javier Vazquez connection. ESPN's Keith Law says the Vazquez to the Mets rumor "appears to have originated in the Chicago camp, and the White Sox are keen to move him."
ESPN's Buster Olney says the Mets inquired on Rays pitcher Edwin Jackson.
Davidoff also points out the Mets' interest in Raul Ibanez despite their emphasis on pitching. The Royals and Cubs are also in on Ibanez so far.

Re: METS OFFSEASON NEWS: FA TARGETS
Lowe over Ollie.
Looks like the Dodgers have offered Manny 25MM per for 2 years, with an option for a 3rd.
On SNY yesterday, Omar talked about how he likes the everyday lineup, and no changes are likely to be made to the major parts. Like krusty mentioned, pitching is the priority. While I think closer is our biggest priority (and I'm also disappointed Omar doesn't attach the same amount of need to that as I do), I think we also have a big need for a clutch bat. Yeah, our offense is still good. But we couldn't get the big hits when it mattered down the stretch. Not like the Phillies could. This is Omar's make-or-break year. I think he's going to live or die with the organization with the results of the upcoming season. While I don't like what I'm hearing so far, I'm willing to let the season unfold again. He's always surprised me with some decent moves. But this season, only the RESULTS will matter.

Seems like the K-Rod camp is 'flexible' on their price ($75MM for 5?)... I think we're still in the mix... along with Fuentes...
