Re: Another Great Andrew Brandt Article- Jerry Jones
I heard that Carl Peterson and Edwards both got the dreaded "vote of confidence" this week from the owner, seems Tony Gonzales was not the only person unhappy that deal wasn't made. It is at least very apparent to me, that Peterson is not the guy to rebuild that football team when he is afraid to do what must be done.
There is definitely good and bad involved in having a maverick owner, the problem is Jones does not appear to have a personnel person who's word he values.

I would say, rather, that Jones' ego will not allow him to work for very long with a valuable personnel person. As a Packer fan and Cowboy hater I am still thankful that Jones so hated sharing credit with Jimmy Johnson that he hastened the demise of his own team's 1990s dynasty. I just hope Jones' desire to spend his way to a championship doesn't lead to him sabotage the NFL's salary cap structure.

It's not limited to Jerry Jones. It goes to the entire Texas mentality. Lot's of gambling done by those guys. There is no real sense of guilt or remorse if something goes wrong or someone get's stiffed. Different mindset that what we've got here in the Midwest.

The thing with the Roy William trade that was so over the top is that by giving up so much in the trade to get Williams, Jones pretty much put himself in a position where he had to overpay to sign Williams.
With Williams due to be a free agent, Jones couldn't give up a 1st/3rd round pick and then let Williams walk after the season. So Williams and his agent suddenly had lots of extra leverage, thus Jones gives 20 million guaranteed to a guy who hasn't shown to be a No.1 WR in the NFL. Basically, Jones gave up 1st/3rd round picks for the right to overpay Williams.

having lived in over 15 states including texas, California, Florida , mississippi, and wisconsin , i will echo the statement that there is a different mentality in texas. people in Wisconsin tend to be very conservative financially. they don't take financial risks. they don't make a lot of money, so they don't risk losing it. they are a very frugal bunch. they believe Cameron making $10 million is being grossly overpaid. To somebody in Texas, he's a steal at that price.
the mentality in texas is to make money, you have to be willing to spend a ton of money. that comes from their real estate dealings and oil industry. they could spend millions of dollars drilling for oil and come up with a dry well, and say oh well, we'll try again somewhere else and think nothing of the money they just wasted. then they spend millions more on another oil well site and strike it rich beyond their wildest dreams. People in Wisconsin would never be able to do that because they couldn't afford to take the risk of the first well not producing anything. people in texas build million dollar homes on the gulf and then don't spend any money on huricane insurance. they take the risk a hurricane won't destroy their home. A person from Wisconsin would never build a million dollar home in a flood zone/ huricane zone. it's just not logical. and if they did build it, they would insure that home to the max. People in Wisconsin seek shelter in tornadoes . people in texas and Loosee- anna just stay home and ride the storm out. it's not about lack of intelligence. it's about risk taking. people down south do illogical things because they are willing to take a bigger risk.
On Interstate 35 going from OK city to Dallas, there stood a 3 story 10,000 sq ft mansion. For over 10 years, it stood half built and abandoned. then it burned to the ground- arson. the story goes that the mansion was owned by some Rancher/real estate/ oil guy who went bankrupt and was never able to finish his dream home. the house, when finished would have compared favorably to any billionaire's home. the house remains stand as a reminder that you would never see anything like it in Wisconsin, because building a house that big and expensive would be too wasteful and risky.
I had a helicopter pilot friend who lived in Dallas and then moved to phoenix. he had a house in Dallas worth between $400-500,000 in the 1990's.. he didn't give it a second thought to allowing the mortgage company to foreclose on his home. and then he bought another one that was bigger in Phoenix.
jerry jones is a risk taker. he takes a lot of risks and makes a lot of bad decisions. But by continuing to take risks, he's hoping he'll one day strike it rich and win the super bowl and that will make up for all the other bad mistakes. Jerry Jones is very reflective of texas society.
TT, on the other hand is very reflective of the cautious, financially frugal Wisconsin mentality. he's a penny pincher. he wears suits and ties. he sets limits and doesn't go over them. he's the type of guy who always gets beat out at the last minute by somebody else on ebay because he's not willing to spend that extra $50 to get the item. TT is a guy who lives within his means.
Today's economic crisis and mortgage problems were not caused by people from Wisconsin. Both Tt and Jones are reflective of the local societies they live in. both of their approaches have proven successful. However, neither would be successful in the others' shoes. TT's financial conservatism would be met with deafening boos from the Dallas society because the y would expect him to always spend as much as possible. jones' spend thrift habits would meet the same boos when he makes all his poor decisions.
i found it very interesting to watch brewers fans and their comments when mark A started to increase the brewers' payroll. They were all very concerned that he spend his money wisely as if he was spending their retirement accounts. it's kind of obvious mark A no longer has the wisconsin financial caution. he has become a risk taker like jerry jones. he sent $10 million on gagne. it didn't work. big deal. he's ready to move on without regrets. gagne was a dry well. mark A will go out tommorow and take a risk and spend more money. people in wisconsin have to understand- it's his team and his money. if he wants to be wasteful, it's his loss, not yours.
it's very easy to tell when reading posts on a forum such as this who has lived their entire life in wisconsin and who have moved on to live in different cultural areas of the US. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to be financially cautious, or it's great to be a risk taker. it's just different. After living my entire youth in Wisconsin, my eyes were opened when I moved to Georgia and Mississippi. it's also an entirely different culture: some of it good, a lot of it bad.

Jerry Jones, who I like to call Boss Hogg, should have known he as making a mistake when Matt Millen got involved.
If Millen liked a player, you knew he was going to be a bust.
