Add The Seahawks To The List

That's right, my fellow Seattle sports' fans. Put them on the list with...

--The Sonics (gone, of course)
--Husky football (can you even call it football?)
--The Mariners (hold your nose when thinking of them)

...of the teams its become too frustrating and painful to put yourself through the process of watching. There's no respite anywhere. The Seahawks were the last resort of decency for us as Seattle sports' fans. And now that's toast.

Is it time for us all to become Blazers fans?

I guess my only respite is the fact that I am a Kings fan already, OSU alum and fan, and have never really cared for baseball. That doesn't change the fact that I am saddened by the current state of the Hawks and at least sympathetic about the state of the other teams (I don't really want to go back to work, though, since I was already "hated" because of OSU did to Wazzu last week...now we add UW to the list).

Of all the teams and their issues, with most of them...we saw it coming. There was always concern about the Sonics moving once Bennett took over, the Huskies (or the Cougars) haven't been good for awhile, and the M's were seen as horrible overachievers last year.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks were still seen by many as division faves going into the season. From first to worst...the reverse Tampa Bay Rays...

Living far away from Seattle, I don't get to see many Seahawks games. The only one I had seen before last night was the Giants game, in which everyone was equally bad and I stopped paying attention to the game in the second half. What struck me the most last night was Cris Collinsworth's commentary on individual players on the Seahawks -- apparently Locklear has been a disappointment, Jennings has been benched, etc. I really didn't realize the extent of it. It's just depressing. And the team seemed to have such good vibes heading after a good offseason -- players were re-signing and re-structuring their deals, the young wide receivers looked like they could step up into the void, a new line coach would be an immediate upgrade, etc. etc.

I was surprised to see last night that Justin Forsett was back in the fold. How did that happen? I guess it must mean he was released again. (And I guess that also means I shouldn't be too enthusiastic about his return.)

I just can't get over how seemingly easy it's become to complete a pass against us. This is probably the thing that has most surprised and disturbed me this year. I thought our pass defense was our strength, and that the Green Bay playoff game was somewhat of a weather induced aberration. When you break things down to...

1) Pass offense
2) Pass defense
3) Run offense
4) Run defense

...I thought pass defense was our greatest strength of the four. I see opposing teams QB's drop back, look around the field, and then hit a receiver who's pretty damn open time and again. It's like our definition of zone defense is don't get within 5 yards of the receiver. This is so disconcerting to me because, even if they show significant improvement the rest of this season in this regard, then I have to ask myself the question "where was their heart all year?" Is our defense's psyche so fragile that they are only capable of playing well when things are going their way? This defense had 4 starting Pro Bowlers on it, didn't it? Maybe I have that wrong.

Whew! I don't know. We've had adversity this year. I know that. But that doesn't account for this meltdown. It doesn't add up to our 1-5 record, and the way in which we've lost most of these games.

Well, I see this as a chance to sort of pull a Spurs.... Remember how they scored Duncan?

We have a pretty good team with some really big issues. I say mail it in, shelf Matt, focus on Secondary improvement, score a top 5 pick and fill a need or two in the draft.

on the one hand... you don't want to breed a culture of losing, on the other hand it might happen at any rate and cost us long term durability for Matt and a put us in the middle of the draft instead of the top.

Yes, totally. A pair of quality secondary guys, or a need and talent that slips would be great.

I was thinking just the opposite: trade up and get a 2nd early 1st rounder like the year when they drafted Walter Jones and Shawn Springs. It always seems like there are more sellers than buyers when it comes to that so there might be a good deal to be had. It also seems ironic that the two spots we should probably look at are once again OL and secondary.

We need some impact players. That's what we're short of. If it takes a 5th or 6th pick to at least get one such player, keep it.
