Harden's shoulder exam on tap
http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribu ... oulde.html
Rich Harden will see a shoulder specialist before the Cubs have to make a decision Wednesday on his $7 million option.

General manager Jim Hendry said Harden would be examined Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday. He received a cortisone shot in the is right shoulder in early September and his velocity dropped after a 10-9-pitch outing against Washington on Aug. 24, when Harden was still throwing in the 95-96 m.p.h. range in the seventh inning, when he struck out the side to finish with 11 strikeouts.

One advance scout told Toronto's Globe and Mail newspaper that he believed Harden had elbow or shoulder problems: "I've had him consistently down at least five miles per hour from what he used to throw. There's something in there [his arm.]"

The Cubs began spacing out his starts following his next outing, resulting in only two regular season starts after Sept. 11th, including a five-inning, 115-pitch start against Milwaukee on Sept. 18th. If Harden has to undergo some arthroscopic surgery to clean out the shoulder, he could return by early May.

If the Cubs knew he'd be ready by then, they'd likely pick up the option. In a more unlikely scenario, they could also decline the option and make Harden arbitration-eligible, in which case he could make even more than $7 million, based on his career numbers (41-20, 3.23 earned-run average) and today's inflated salaries for starting pitchers.

Either way, Harden is the Cubs property in '09.

then he could strikeout with Sori all the time

anyway, you could do worse than Dunn

and Sori has

If he put up 40+ homers I could deal with the strikeouts.

Last season Adam Dunn hit .236/.386/.513/.898. Strikeouts are an overrated statistic at times.

Cubs' Carlos Marmol injured in car accident
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/ba ... 7673.story
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - Cubs reliever Carlos Marmol suffered minor injuries in a car accident early Tuesday in the Dominican Republic.

A truck hit a car carrying Marmol, a cousin and a friend in his hometown of Bonao near 2 a.m. The All-Star right-hander had just arrived in the Caribbean nation after the Cubs were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs.

Marmol said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that the air bag deployed and he only suffered a cut and an "inflammation" of his forehead.

"Out of precaution they did different studies on my body, and I don't have any kind of serious injury," he wrote.

Not a shocker
http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribu ... snt-n.html
The Cubs picked up Rich Harden’s $7 million option on Wednesday after an exam showed he does not require shoulder surgery.

If the Cubs hadn't picked up the option, Harden would've been eligible for salary arbitration, but still would've been their property in 2009, no matter how much he made.

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry will address the media later Wednesday, so stay tuned for more on the Harden decision.

Even with his constant injury concerns, Harden is going to ask for and will receive A LOT of money next season.

On the wiretap they have an article mentioning Junichi Tazawa from Japan. I guess the Cubs scouted him up there and Tazawa wants to come to America to play in the MLB. Would Hendry consider signing him as a 5th starter or a middle reliever? It would be a risk after the money he dished out to get Fukudome but it may make Fukudome feel more comfortable here next season.
Not sure I'm in the mood for another Japanese bust though.

Same here. The Cubs don't need to majorly improve their pitching staff, so I don't want to waste money on a likely bust. I would rather spend our money on a true leadoff man or a power hitting left handed hitter like a Bobby Abreu.

With Marshall and Marquis battling for the 5th spot.

Randy Wells possibly replacing Lieber

Guzman replacing Howry

we need a lefty in the pen, perhaps one vet Righty because Guzman, Shark and others are untested.

No need for a starter or long relief guy.

We need some solid bench bats and a platoon option with Fukudome.

At this point I think band aids are more likely then major changes.

Adding Ibanez is likely, hopefully Furcal is the works. What do you guys think about moving Riot? Because I honestly dont wanna lose DeRo at 2nd and I dont want to see him playing RF full time.

Jake Peavy told reporters at the end of the season that he would not accept a trade to the AL.

When asked about his trade stance again Tuesday in the midst of reports that he's on the block Peavy responded that he didn't "want to get into any speculation." His preference is important given the full no-trade clause included in his recent contract extension. "Jake has a strong preference to stay in the National League," agent Barry Axelrod said. Alexrod added that "Jake would only approve a trade to a team with a solid chance of winning," specifically mentioning Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and St. Louis as cities that fit "his and his family's lifestyle."

Lets throw some hypotheticals out there. Say we could get Peavy. Do we have what it takes? How likely is it? Are the padres trading him for salary relief or rebuilding? Because I would definitely trade Z for Peavy.

I heard the Padres are looking for a CF prospect and a few pitching prospects. Not sure how much value Pie has anymore.

soriano for manny?

There's no way the Cubs can play two left fielders, so Soriano would have to go for Ramirez to come. Soriano seems to be essentially an immovable object with six years and $106 million left on his contract, but the Dodgers will need two things if they don't re-sign Ramirez—power hitting and another buzz guy.

Could Soriano soften the blow of losing Ramirez?

it would be nice to have someone who could hit in the postseason

Makes sense because Torre managed Soriano in New York but why would anyone want Soriano and his awful contract?
