Lakers waive Coby Karl

Post#1 » by lakerfan10770 » Mon Oct 27, 2008 7:00 pm

I didn't see a wiretap or anything, but it is on NBA.com, under transactions

Link:
http://www.nba.com/transactions/current_month_transactions.html

He seems like a good kid and all, but charity only goes so far. With the Lakers over the luxury tax his $711,517 salary would cost double. I am sure he will find a job overseas or in the NBDL, anyways good luck Coby...

I think he has a little talent and personally it wasnt fair for him to waste on our bench.
Hopefully like you said he might get a deal overseas, or maybe his pops can help him with another team.
But I didnt think he was a good fit in our lineup.
Good luck Coby ......

I wanted him waived. It's tough to get cut, but I'm glad we trimmed down to 14. 1.4 million for someone that's going to play the majority of time in the D league is not wise spending for an organization that has major financial contracts to take care of in the near future. So long Carl.

good luck Coby. It's sad to see him go but being stuck on the bench all the time would suck even more i think. We work you butt off thru Hight School, College (if they go to college), and get stuck sitting on the bench..

So 14 now.. who's next or are we going to get more prospects

He is a pretty good bench player. Who did you guys decide to keep over him? Mbenga and sun yue? I guess they chose sun yue because he is lankier and can defend better, average shooter, and is more marketable. Mbenga is a good cover too. He shown pretty good improvement but i guess it was a numbers game.

I hate to see Coby Karl go but it gives us 14 on the roster and we didn't use our MLE during the off-season. So we got more than 1.4mil vet min Chubby Chaser was talking about.

Business is...........business, and that's something that had to be done at some point. I had nothing personal against Karl, I just didn't see him as a factor in helping this team win consistently.

Agree about Yue. As foolish as it is to write somebody off after one preason, he looked absolutely terrible. He needs to learn how to shoot, play defense and put on a good 10 or 15 pounds of pure muscle -- and that's just for starters.

With Karl, at least you saw flashes of potential. I still think he's got the makings of a solid NBA player -- we are just too deep and cap-strapped to keep him. It's sort of the same reason we let Turiaf walk. Keeping him, with the talent we have and the payroll we're dealing with, was more luxury than necessity.

I guess that gives us a spot open for Zo, should he want to live the latter part of his life by the beach in Malibu, where the weather is perfect all year around and hot young actress babes are walking down the beach all day looking for retiring basketball players with time to kill...

Too bad, though. I think Coby Karl still has a lot of untapped potential. But based on what little I saw of pre-season, he disappointed greatly. I thought this was going to be his breakout year, but it turned out to be the other way around. Wonder what happened. Hope he'll be OK. Good luck, Coby!

And no, nobody ever said he was going to be the next Harper. Reading comprehension isn't all easy for everyone, I guess.

I'm not overly worried about Turiaf after what I've seen from Josh Powell. The dude is basically 2X the better player as compared to Turiaf at half the price. That was great business by Mitch.

Re: Karl, he can play in this league, may never be a starter but could be a good roster filler for his attitude and ethusiasm for the game. Sun Yuefor all the supposed marketing he brings, has many loose ends to tie up in his game before he can be considered a player at this level. Frankly, he doesn't have more of a game than a good YMCA baller you see at a gym.
