"LBJ: Cavs Won't Watch Celtics Get Rings"

Post#1 » by campybatman » Tue Oct 28, 2008 11:42 pm

Who said that the Celtics need the ceremony as motivation for the game? I don't understand his comments. He's beginning to yak like Gilbert Arenas.

LeBron James says that the Cavaliers will not be on the court to watch the Celtics receive their rings on Tuesday night.

"We don't need to be out there watching that; we need to get ready for the game," James said. "Congratulations to them. But we're not [like] the fans of Boston. We don't need to be out there clapping for them getting rings."

The Cavaliers will wait in the locker room until the ceremony is over.

"It's stupid," James said of using the ceremony as motivation.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see what's wrong with that. He congratulated them and then pretty much said that the Cavs aren't going to be out there cheering for the Celtics as if they were fans.

As far as using the ring ceremony as motivation, I think that they probably meant as motivation for the Cavs. To me, there's nothing in this quote that is in any way Gilbert-esque.

Why would the players of the opposing team "clap" for the Celtics that night anyways? If he and teammates preferred to remain in the visitor's locker room until everything was over. Why not leave it at that? I wonder what was the question asked of him.

Edit: I reread the last comment. I misread it. He's referring to his own team. They don't need the motivation as if to say they aren't irked from being eliminated from the playoffs last season by Boston. I understand the other quote now but it still came off like LeBron felt irritated by (again) whatever the question to him was.

This is just another example of LeBron coming off like he thinks he's lord of the league or something. He's starting to get whiny (remember all his bellyaching during the playoffs last year?) For a guy who is so supremely talented, with all the petulance and flopping and faking injuries, he sure isn't as likable as he should/could be, which is too bad.

Hey LeBron, WIN something first (hell, make your teammates BETTER first) and then talk...

That's why it isn't a surprise that all of the players I would say are my favorite players in the league today tend to be the veterans. I'm not really a fan of the young players and rightfully so. A lot of the young stars come off unlikable to me. Blame them, the national media and advertisers that build them up or the direction in which the league is in and who it caters to. I just don't like them. I can acknowledge a good player when I see one but there's nothing wrong with disliking a player. You've a right not to be a fan of him. I'll say Shaq and Kobe are the two players that I would readily mention by name that I absolutely loathe regardless of the franchise they play for.

A player like LeBron I'm just indifferent about like his peers. But, it's so irksome to read about them yakking again, again and again. I almost don't blame them but wish the media wouldn't ask them questions and just let them be.

This isn't Isiah and co refusing to shake hands with the winner and leaving before the game is done. Much ado about nothing.

Personally I thought it was classless. Gave me the sore loser vibe.

Hell if the Yankees could do it when the Red Sox won there is no reason the Cavs can't give the Celtics respect for their night.

meh, i don't see a problem with it. did you really think the Cavs should sit there and get their noses rubbed in the dirt for a half an hour thru speeches by stern and pierce and everyone about how great the C's are?

please. it was the Celtics night with their fans. the Cavs weren't invited. i'm glad they didn't come.

But, why would it be viewed to Cleveland as Boston "rubbing it in their noses" if they were out present during the ceremony? I mean it was Detroit who were eliminated last season in the eastern conference finals by Boston and not Cleveland. The Pistons you could expect this behavior from. But, then we're talking about LeBron; supposedly "God's gift" to the NBA fans.

As said, if the visiting team doesn't want to be present, then they can remain in the locker room until it's time for them to be on their side of the court. That's fine. But, the media shouldn't have asked them to comment about it. Of course, you're going to bite your tongue anytime you're prompted to give praise or to acknowledge the achievement of the team that dashed your hopes of reaching a NBA Finals. Only the real intelligent (or clever) players know how to spin it. The ones who are bitter will show that bitterness.

His attitude is just disrespecteful to the league and to the basketball game!

It can be viewed as nothing meaningful, but this is my take. No fair play from LeBron!

Thank god we proceed to win the game.

The main thing is this isn't the first time he's come off like a petulant brat not getting what he's "owed" (ie glory and a title). He should just keep his damn mouth shut and actually go out and, you know, WIN something. Think Jordan or Bird or Magic or Russ or Kareem, etc would have said something?

There's a difference between those who let things motivate them quietly and intensely inside and those who have the tell anyone within earshot how much it motivates them (showing, of course, it really doesn't)

Wise words. I'm not a fan of the ball-dominating Chris Paul e.g.. I wasn't even a fan of Pierce' offensive game in his early chucker years.

Regarding the topic: Actually I have no idea if the opponent attends the banner/ring ceremony usually. If they do, the Cavs should have been on the court. If not, it's a non-story.

If would be if LeBron had just kept his mouth shut and tried to win. For a guy who gets so much hype and talks so much, he sure hasn't won **** yet!

You guys can be such crybabies sometimes. Waaah waaah!! Lebron's not attending our ring ceremony! Boo-hoo!!!

Seriously, would it have been such a problem if the Cavs beat us last year and KG said these same remarks? I don't think so. Having to sit and watch the team that eliminated you the year before get their championship rings is the equivalent of attending the wedding of your ex-girlfriend, who happens to be marrying the guy who whupped your ass to win her heart.

The difference being with LeBron it's his need to say something to make everyone think "oh, look how motivated he is"

This is the equivalent of the guy at work who has to go around telling everyone how much of a workaholic he is, instead of just shutting up and DOING it. Big difference

Seriously, what was he supposed to say? I'm assuming a reporter asked him "Hey Lebron, are you going to be watching that ring ceremony, perhaps use it for extra motivation for the game?" It's not like Lebron scheduled some press conference solely for the purpose of saying he wasn't attending the ring ceremony. Did he take an ad out in the paper, perhaps put up a billboard on the I-95? Maybe write it in his blog or on his facebook account? You guys can be so petty sometimes.

So what *have* opposing teams done in the recent past? Does anyone remember?

Wow, the fake Celtic fans bending over backwards so they don't look too much like homers have already started, 1 game into the season...great!

It wasn't WHAT he said or HOW he said it, it's just another in a list of bratty comments he always makes. Here's an idea, LeBron...make your teammates better for once and **** WIN something!

So I'm a fake Celtic fan now, because I don't have a problem with what Lebron said? Gimme a **** break dude. Actually no, wait - I'd actually like for you to elaborate on your accusation. Tell me why I'm a fake Celtic fan. This should be fun.

Fact of the matter is this: I think Lebron is/can be an arrogant jerk. But I'm not going to get bent out of shape because he didn't attend the Celtics' ring ceremony, nor will I question his talent. You want to talk about making your teammates better? The guy took that team of scrubs to the 2007 NBA Finals. That's pretty darn good in my books.

Return to Boston Celtics
