Kevin Love - OJ Mayo watch

Post#1 » by theGreatRC » Thu Oct 30, 2008 4:06 am

This is going to be talked about the whole season, we might as well keep track of how OJ and Kevin Love do.

From NBA4.you

Tonight was the debut of many rookies in the NBA, but no two are linked together like Kevin Love and OJ Mayo. Kevin Love was traded on draft night for the draft rights to OJ Mayo, which looked to be a parallel of the Roy-Foye trade of 2006(This time the Wolves got Mike Miller, who is a good scorer, rebounder, and underrated passer). Tonight, Kevin Love looked solid; racking up two AND1 shots, blocking shots, and even threw down a two-handed dunk that teammate Rashad McCants bounced to him. Love finished the game with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 blocked shots in only 18:31 of playing time off the bench; he then returned to the bench after picking up his fourth foul, and Coach Randy Wittman needed a vet to finish the nail biter at the staples center, which resulted in a win.

OJ Mayo on the other hand seemed to struggle with his shot, going 5-20 from the field(missing all seven of his three-point attempts) and finished with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 turnovers and two steals in a loss to the Houston Rockets.

PS - He played 40 minutes!

So as Wednesday night concludes in the NBA; Kevin Love: 1, OJ Mayo: 0

OJ shooting 5-20????

I could see some problems here in Minny if OJ took that many shots, not saying he would be able to as the offense revolves around Big Al.

Plus the fact that Love outproduced Mayo in less than half the time

I told myself I wouldn't do it, but I checked on Mario Chalmers and dog gone it, he almost had a triple-double. I was expecting like 6 points and 2 assists or something sucky.

This is going to be the template for the rest of the season. OJ is OJ,,,here or at $C. lots of minutes, some good games, but mostly lots of inefficient BAD to mediocre games. THAT is his game,,,this player who is two years older than the rest of his class.

Kluv was always a very efficient player. A player who does a lot with very few touches. In fact he may have been better at O efficiency than Beasley was.

OK, I know I'm the king of mix-ups here, but even I don't say "Minnesota Lakers" any more.

No I got it. Southern Cal.

I was taking a "wait and see" approach on Kevin Love, but I thought he was tremendous tonight. the rebound he got from around the other side, underneath the basket was amazing, and its like his hands had superglue on them when he'd go up in a crowd for a rebound. I'm really excited about the kid.

I guess I should have been clearer. I was referring to the original post:

Good to see Love do well. I think Mayo will also do well.

I think this comparison of them is going to get old fast, but there will be the curiosity.

Staples center...lol

I expect Mayo to have a lot of 5-20 type games. But he'll also have 14-21 with 32 points games.

Mayo didn't actually have a bad game. He played quite well in the first half, and equally (if not more) bad in the second. He was much more involved in the offense and performed at a higher level in the first, whereas in the 2nd it was like he didn't know what to do other than to put up shots. His defense was very good in the first, whereas in the 2nd he had to deal with McGrady posting him up constantly, a result of his good perimeter d on McGrady in the first half and Yao's ineffectiveness in the post. His post d was pretty bad, but I doubt that would be much of a problem since he won't be going against T-Mac every night. Memphis is an interesting young team, especially with Gasol and Arthur up front.

Mike Wilbon crazy? Or our new favorite person?

On the Oct. 30th airing of PTI(Pardon the interruption), Mike Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser debated on whether Kevin Love would average over/under 12 points and 9 rebounds.

Tony and Mike both expressed their liking of Kevin Love, and Mike Wilbon commented that he can see Love averaging about 13.3 points and 10 rebounds a game. High praise for a player who could be overshadowed by OJ Mayo.

The comparisons wont get too bad due to the fact that they play different positions. Mayo's stats will, over the course of the season have more gaudy stats then Love, but it will be all about who helps their team win more. and right now, Love has the greater chance of helping his team win then Mayo.
"That's why the last two years weren't guaranteed," Walsh said. "Either way, he knew it could have happened either way."

As a Rockets fan I was glad Mayo has little basketball IQ. McGrady was guarding him most of the time and T-Mac is still recovering from knee surgery and can barely move laterally. Mayo should have been driving on him all game long, instead he settled for fade-away Js all night long.
Then again maybe it's a Memphis thing. Artest was overplaying Gay all nite and Rudy never went backdoor on him.

um..monotheist sir.

I was making a joke with everyone giving Mayo the "savior" complex. If you read 98% of stuff about him he is either Jordan or baby jordan. No middle ground.
