Mo Williams on Jerry Sloan (from SI.com)

Post#1 » by JDubJazz » Fri Oct 31, 2008 5:16 pm

There are an interesting couple of paragraphs in an interview with Mo Williams about his time with the Jazz. Its in Ian Thompson's weekly piece for SI.com.

3. Why every young point guard should spend a year with Jerry Sloan.

"I love Jerry Sloan. He'll go down as the best coach I ever played for. I learned a whole lot in seven months there [as a Jazz rookie in 2003-04]. As good a coach as he is, he's a much better person. I've even been to his houses in Utah and Chicago. I learned how to play the game in Utah because it's so systematic. It teaches you how to play defense, how to rotate on offense, how to be a point guard -- because they put everything on the point guard to run the show....

I have always like Mo Williams. I was mad when we let him go, but I guess in the end, I prefer the Williams we have now.

It is nice, however, to see him share some love for Jerry. Jerry is a HOF coach, that I think is underrated, simply because he hasnt won a championship. We have been damn lucky to have such a quality coach lead our franchise for such a long time.

Mo Williams is a really cool guy.

One of the coolest things I've seen in an NBA game was during Mo's return to Utah for the first time right before tip off he ran over to the Jazz bench to say hi to Sloan and thank him and the rest of the coaching staff.

It's one of the only times I'd ever seen Sloan and Phil Johnson both crack a huge smile on the bench and almost jump out of their chairs to go talk to him. They were both really excited for him and you could see he was really happy to be having an opportunity that the Jazz let him have by letting him go.

The one who got away . . .

Its okay, because we ended up with Deron which is aokay with me, but Mo was awesome. He was one of the few rookies who got time under Sloan. I always wish the best for that dude.

For all his flaws, I think Jerry is probably one of the most stable guys in the league. Great fit here in Utah.

Word is, South Beach is ecstatic that they
won't be seeing Millsaps talents again this season...
