Iverson headed to detroit?

Post#1 » by Dcbaseballer52 » Mon Nov 3, 2008 4:38 pm

I was just watching Sportscenter and Stephen A. Smith has reported that the Denver Nuggets are sending Iverson to Detroit for Chauncey Biullups and Antonio Mcdyess.

This is of interest to Pacers fans because it could dramatically change a team that is expected to be at the top of our own division. Mcdyess is nto expected to remain with the Nuggets. Also Iverson is on the last year of his deal.

Team Outlook

Pistons

Allen Iverson/Rodney Stuckey
Richard Hamilton/Aaron Afflalo
Tayshaun Prince/Walter Hermann
Amir Johnson/Jason Maxiell
Rasheed Wallace/Kwame Brown

Nuggets
Chauncey Billups/Anthony Carter
J.R. Smith/Dahntay Jones
Carmello Anthony/Linas Kleiza
Kenyon Martin/Renaldo Balkman
Nene Hilario/ Steven Hunter

Not sure is this trade benefits either team very much for this year. I don't see it making the Nuggets much better if at all. This just makes the Pistons even smaller than they were but it could give them the energy boost they need

I like this idea. Mostly because I think it makes Detroit decidedly worse on the court this year, and puts them in a position where they'll likely want to re-sign Sheed and AI for less than what they're getting now, but still tying up their salary for 3 more years or so at big money.

Now, if Detroit has the gall to let both AI and Sheed walk, and they can go out and sign the guys they need to rebuild around Prince, Hamilton, and Stuckey, then I don't like this deal as much as a Pacers fan as it could make Detroit solid for another 5-10 years.

I don't agree that this makes them worse on the court this year. It could, but it's far from a foregone conclusion.
I have no idea what you're talking about, and clearly, neither do you.

ESPN says it's true

I think Detroit's window has closed, I really do. And it makes me chortle with glee. Trading Billups for Iverson would only be confirmation that they need to regroup.

They are still a good team, but not good enough to win it all.

The Pistons needed a shakeup, but I don't think this was the right move.

Billups was the rock of the team. The guy who would hit the big shot and really was the consistent anchor, game-in, and game-out. If anyone of their main core should've been traded, it should've been Rasheed Wallace.

Great teams win Championships. Integrating Iverson with the team aspect that has been so successful for the Detroit Pistons is going to be difficult if not impossible.

This definitely takes Denver off of the possible list of Tinsley Takers

This is awful for the Pistons, which is good for us. At the same time, it tales away the possibility of Tinsley to Denver, which sucks for us.

I don't think Iverson will make the Pistons much better, Billups was the perfect point guard for them, in my opinion.

But they're rebuilding, I guess Iverson's contract will expire at the end of the season alond with Sheed's, and I've heard they're shopping Rip Hamilton too.

I like this move for both teams.

Dice, AI, and Billups are at the end of their careers, so there is no gamble on one of the players becoming MVP. Both teams had gotten as much out of the current squads and both should be better now. Billups gives Denver a true point and Dice provides depth. Detroit opens up minutes for Stuckey and Johnson/Maxiell while gaining a true franchise player in AI.

Im glad. I think this makes Pistons worse on the court. Dumb move by Pistons. Sucks no Tinsley to Denver now.

I don't like this trade at all for the Pistons. Even though i hate them with a passion, Billups is one guy i respect because he was so good. Clutch and a great leader. I'm not really sure how they will move the ball on offense. Although, i'm sure Joe Dumars is already talking about a second trade because this doesn't make much sense.

Well we could always help our old Piston friends out by giving them the Tin Man

I think i would've liked this deal much better for Denver if they still had Camby hanging around, worse case scenario though, they find a way to move Billups for a stud young PG from a contender somewhere.

The upshot to this trade is that the infusion of Iverson into the Pistons’ starting lineup will cost Detroit some wins, and likely the Central Division crown. Denver, on the other hand, is still at best, in the lower half of the Western Conference, likely meaning a first round playoff series on the road, and far less cap relief to rebuild over the offseason.

This is not a dumb move by the Pistons. Dumars knows what he is doing. He knows that the Pistons are on the downswing and realistically, they wouldnt win a playoff series against Boston, Cleveland, and Toronto and Philly closed the gap on them too. That team was complacent and going nowhere fast. This was a savvy move for the future. They love Stuckey and want him to start, they will use that cap space from the Iverson/Wallace expiring deals wisely, and they are building around Prince, Stuckey, Maxiell, and Johnson. I dont think Detroit even falls off much this year. They're still a playoff team and their ceiling is still probably the second round, but they help out their future in the process.

I do think this will help in our matchups against Detroit. They're giving up an important big man in McDyess, and with our perimeter-oriented defense, I think we can keep them from scoring a little more. Plus, if AI is playing point, he tends to gamble defensively, and TJ can take advantage of that if he doesn't get the ball poked away. It'll definitely be interesting to watch.

Obviously this will help the Pistons in the future, but right now it makes them a good deal worse. Rebuilding isn't as easy as having cap space though - this could set them back.

How? A good deal worse? They basically traded Billups for Iverson. They needed some sort of change there, and Iverson isnt going to want to come there and not win. He is still an upper-tier player in the league and really he only downgrades their defense a little. His penetration abilities will be nice on their jump-shooting oriented team. I really dont think Detroit gets much worse here.

As for rebuilding...yeah, its not as easy as having cap space, but Detroit already has some pieces in place. Prince, Stuckey, and Maxiell/Johnson is a good start. Plus, Joe Dumars is one of the best GMs in the business, I suspect he has a plan.

Good move by the Pistons. Billups is overrated in my eyes and AI will be an improvement in just about everything but defense. He will also be awesome for Stuckey to watch and learn with. If I am correct, he is a FA too so at worst, they give up a Chauncey Billups for a 1 year AI rental and then have a bit of money to work with.
