OT: Please get out and VOTE
A lot of us have differences in opinion as to who would best run the country, but one thing that we can all do, and we SHOULD do, is exercise the right to vote. It's not something that we should take for granted. There was a time when women couldn't vote; there was a time when blacks couldn't vote. We have US troops of all genders and races fighting overseas to protect our most basic liberties, and one of those liberties is the right to vote.
So please, if you're registered, leave work early/arrive late, ditch class...this only comes around once every four years, and there are hundreds of thousands of people around the world who would love to be able to exercise this most basic and precious of rights. Our country was founded on the right to vote, so USE your right today and send a message to the rest of the world; Democrat or Republican, Independent or Libertarian, Green or Constitutionalist: I am actively partaking in trying to make a better America a reality.
So get off your butt, stop reading RealGM, and VOTE!!!!!!!!

McCain.
I don't love him, but I've read too much to ignore history and facts (I'm a big-time history nerd). McCain bugs me sometimes, but he respects the constitution and he's principled. That's what matters.
If you like the idea of socialism (aka Barack Obamma's policies), pull out a history book and read how those policies have fared over time. It's scary. I don't want to live in the U.S.S.A... Capitalism is the basis for everything good (economically) about our way of life and out country. I'm not rich, by any means, but the notion that the government should be stealing money from those who have earned it and spreading it around is socialist and it's frightening. I want to work for what I get. I believe everyone should do the same.
We need less government.
We need Ron Paul.
In the absence of Ron Paul, I vote for the better of the Evils.
McCain ain't great, but he's a known quantity.

Re: OT: Please get out and VOTE
I hope everyone gets out and vote, no matter who they vote for. but this is my take.
pidi, since your from Germany, maybe look back into the 80ās and beyond and look at what eastern Europe was and how it functioned under socialist?
All I have to say is Thank You mckane!!!! Most do not or even care about the history of Socialism or Marxism. It does not work and kills the country over time. They won't even take time to look at it. They just fall in love with a speech! All I hear is just words. I have gone to Oās rallies, listened to tons of his speeches because I want to look at both candidates objectively. I voted for Napolitano for governor of Arizona. Shes a Dem. I hear what Oās saying, and he is like a motivational speaker. But look at the mans works, and by his fruits, you may know who he is. And I quit frankly do not like what I see. The make up is scary by all means. I look at the whole, not just what he says in speeches.
Too much government (ie socialism) is not good, especially in a recession. Look at FDR and the great depression. If you donāt know it, history will repeat itself.
Im not for redistribution of wealth either. I came from a lower income neighborhood and I want to work myself into being successful. I donāt want handouts, I can do it myself.
McCain IMO is the better option. I think neither has a clue about economics like ron paul or even Romney, and at least he has been tested. I did not agree with him all the time, but I did like some of the things he did for the state of Arizona.
That is just my feelings and after months of research, this is who I want to vote for.

Re: OT: Please get out and VOTE
Just got back from the polling station, and I don't want this to turn into a political discussion b/c this is just a "move yo arse and vote" thread, but I voted for Obama, and congratulations to whoever voted for McCain. We each in our own way made our mark on this country.

Voted Obama here
To everyone saying Obama is a socialist that's the same as calling McCain a facist. If you want to vote for McCain for what ever reason that's fine but to purposely make up stuff about the other candidate to make you feel better about your own makes no sense.
Obama's policies are almost the same as Kerry's, Gore's and Clinton's. Obama even said he wanted to bring tax rates to what they were under Bill Clinton's administration so I guess Clinton was a socialist?
Like Obama said a few weeks ago
You like George Bush and his policies vote McCain because he voted 90% of the time with him
You liked Bill Clinton and his policies vote Obama because he represents 90% of them

Re: OT: Please get out and VOTE
I've been reading a lot of political discussions on RealGM and I've noticed one thing: the word socialism is being thrown around like some kind of insult. But what a lot of people fail to realize is: socialism =/= communism. And Obama is far from that. Obama would be considered a very conservative liberal (if this makes any sense) here in Europe.

Re: OT: Please get out and VOTE
well, the good thing is, that we got some smart guys here on the board who voted.
but again, i think that you amis have a bigger problem to solve than just obama and a maybe socialistic thinking.
what will go on with the iraq war?? come on, the whole war is to have a enemy of state, thats all.
you over there need an enemy and usama bin muhamad bin laden isn“t findable, so bush chose iraq.
the best thing about it is that bush will retire, no matter what...
don“t take it personal, it“s just an oppinion from a poor german

Re: OT: Please get out and VOTE
MaryvalesFinest, if you understood what facist is, you would not put that under mccain, but obama. If you were at the ASU Obama rally this past spring, you would have seen it firsthand like I did. Grant it, maybe obama is not as liberal in Europe, but in American he is.
Fact is, clinton did not have full control like Obama is going to have and is going to be able to spread the wealth, that is fully Marxism. He does have similar views, but if you look at the man in general, he is not in the same class as a Clinton. His current and past makeup is what shows his socialist views. His affiliations is what makes me nervous too. Same with bigger government who runs the country, and the people are not the main focus anymore is socialism. To some, socialism is not a bad thing until you look at history. And if you look at history, you can see what these type of political actions have. Transitional stage between capitalism and communism, and limits freedoms in which this country was founded on.
Bush IMO started off good, then went down hill fast. However, he has not done it by himself like so many want to blame. It has been our whole political leaders as a whole. They have failed the people as leaders and have forgotten that it is WE THE PEOPLE.
However, I am excited that a biracial president is finally come to America. I hope for the best because I love this county and know it is the best out there. I do not want to become the far west Europe. McCain just took the high road and gave a good speech in talking about Obama as his next president. It was a class act and something that all Americans should do. The man has a huge hill to climb with the current economic situation and the mess the past administration has left. The thing I feared as I said in the first post is what happened during FDRās administration, the new deal that actually dug this country deeper into a depression.

I'm venting here, but I'm somewhat ashamed to be a part of a state that passed a ban on gay-marriage. Legalized segregation is not something I agree with.

I've got to commend all of you for having an educated and insightful discussion about politics without falling into name-calling and personal insults. This is the most mature discussion I've seen on politics in quite some time. I commend all of you who voted.
I do not like Obamma's record or the implications of his policies. I voted for McCain because of the content of his character, not the color of his skin. I prefer his policies and stances on important issues to me.
I think it's absolutely amazing and historic that we have an african american as the president of the United States. That alone is something we can all agree on and be proud of. It's an historic day in America, and I'm proud to say I live in a country where this is possible.
Regarding socialism and Obama. Socialism has proven historically to weaken a country, and it can and does lead to communism. It's a slippery slope. I'll do everything I can to fight for capitalism and to stomp out this socialist fad that seems to be sweeping over our country right now. If you've bought into hype and you are drinking the kool-aid, please please please go study a little about history. Pick up a book by Ron Paul called "Revolution". He explains why both Republicans and Democrats are wrong and why our nation is in trouble with all of these Socialist fads right now.
A one paragraph history lesson: American was born (revolted against England) to avoid the high federal British taxes and ulta strong monarchial government in England (yes, there were other reasons too). American was founded on the principles of property ownership (and that the government had no right to steal that property from you). The right to bear arms was created so you could protect your property and defend it if the government tried to take it from you. The constitution did not allow for Federal income tax for a reason. The central government was not supposed to grow and metastisize into a monster that it is today.
Just some thoughts.
Ron Paul 2012.
