Down the road: Can Ray Allen be our ticket to summer 2010?
So LBJ and co are up in the summer of 2010 right? There are a lot of guys and likely one of the best shots at landing a star player. I'm hoping that someone here knows the rules better than I do and can give some better insight. The idea is basically resigning with the intention of trading him as an expiring along with other assets for a big name player to add to PP KG and (hopefully not traded) RR.
For this would we want to sign him for one more years or two more?
With so many guys going to be FAs, I'm sure Danny could talk someone into wanting to play here and forcing a sign and trade. There seem to be a lot of teams opening up money so this could make it a better market for us. Players will have sway over their former team in forcing a trade where they want to go because there would be enough teams they could simply sign to, leaving nothing for their former teams.
Thoughts?

There's really only maybe 5 or 6 teams who will be looking to pick up free agents. New York and New Jersey(or Brooklyn) are two of them, and I don't see Boston trading with either. I just don't see a trade that will happen, but there's a lot that could happen between now and then.

We wouldn't be trading with a team with cap space. We'd be trading with the team the player is leaving.

In that case, you'd have no idea which players will be disgruntled by then. It's too early to say much. I was thinking Carmelo before, but it looks like Denver may improve.

The idea is you trade with a team for a disgruntled star and then sign him long term because you can offer him more than anyone else.
For instance, Assuming Lebron is gone from Cleveland in 2010:
1)You Trade Ray Allen, picks, and youth to the Cavs for Lebron.
2) You get Lebron and some crappy contracts from Cleveland.
3) You sign Lebron to a deal bigger than anyone else can.
4) David Stern does his happy dance
5) KG wins one last title before retiring
6) King James leads a new Celtics dynasty

I wouldnt mind trying to pry Gerald Wallace or Okafor from a struggling Bobcats roster.

I'm for whatever move that involves trading Ray Allen.

By summer of 2010 do you think Ray Allen will still be a caliber player that a team like Cleveland, Miami, Denver, or Toronto would want? Especially at a kind of salary that is required so that he can be exchanged for someone like LeBron James? I think teams would rather have let their players walk for nothing and save money instead of taking an old Ray Allen.

Re: Down the road: Can Ray Allen be our ticket to summer 2010?
My feeling for a while, has been to keep the Big 3 together through the end of Rays contract as long as they're championship competitive. If they repeat this year, then there is no way I'd break them up, I'd just let Rays contract expire and take it from there.
However if some retooling is needed, I'd like to avoid bidding for the 2010 FA class, and trade Ray and his expiring contract to someone who does want to go in the auction, and pick up some assets that way.
Personally I think the 2010 class has way too much hype, because I feel it likely that many of the players will resign with their existing clubs. As a result, I think some teams who are aligning themselves for that FA class will find themselves striking out.
With regards to extending Ray with the intention of using him in a sign and trade, I'm not sure I see the value in doing that. I think Rays principal trade value next year would be his expiring contract, not Ray locked up for extra years.

I think a team losing their young star might be enticed by our offer. They get one year of Ray Allen. That might be able to replace somewhat what they lost. They also have a trading chip as he would be expiring. We can also send out other assets such as Powe, Allen, youth ext and picks. For someone like LBJ we can offer Rondo. Thats not a terrible offer. A year of Ray, a good young point guard, some picks and other minor assets and cash.

I was just reading an article on the general discussion board about Wade getting frustrated with Miami already. I know he has connections to Doc Rivers. Do you think the Celtics would have any shot at acquiring him if he demanded a trade?

Re: Down the road: Can Ray Allen be our ticket to summer 2010?
We absolutley should look at moving Allen next year. He will be extremly valuable as an expiring max contract. Who knows if Atlanta might want to clear salary on a Josh Smith or Charolette's owners could get sick of losing and try to trade Okafor or Wallace. And with the size of Ray's contract we could also take on a bad salary player from the team. There are quite a few teams who could be looking to go the cheap route in a year and we are set to reap the rewards three years in a row with Ray's then Pauls then KG's contracts. That is the genius of DA he not only set us up to win now, but he also set us up with max contract guys who will be commodities in their final years in Boston. That is how you become and stay good in this day and age in the NBA!

Dumars and Ainge are retooling and still trying to field a competitive team now. Makes me wonder if these two franchises could be dominant teams for the remainder of this decade and leading into the next one if each can manage to sign a significant free agent from the 2010 crop of free agents (or those that can opt out). I know it's being said that Detroit could target Bosh. I'm uncertain which player Ainge could target himself.
I mean the Pistons have Hamilton, Stuckey and Maxiell in place longterm. While the Celtics will ideally lockup Rondo and Powe and extend either or both Pierce and Garnett like Detroit has done with Hamilton. I wouldn't mind it if Ray Allen could be extended somehow. But, realistically, why would he accept less in salary when he could sign for a tad more and still probably be a starter for a contending team in two years. Remember, Ray keeps himself in optimal condition and eats right in his life. It's just he's somewhat injury prone but it isn't like he can help it. And shooters have longevity in this league.

You are correct. I for one though can't part with PP or KG. That said, Ray has to be traded if we want to get a new asset. Maybe we can sign him to one more year when his contract is up and then if not traded do it again, thus always keeping him an expiring.

Why would a re-building team want 1 year of Ray Allen? For example, what good is an old Ray Allen to Cleveland if they just lost LeBron? This is just a fantasy that really doesn't have a chance of happening. Your best bet is to look for players who are signed to big deals that become un-happy with a losing franchise.

Here are a few reasons (not specific to the cavs but any team trading to us):
1. Ray is still a marketable big name
2. Still pretty effective
3. Expiring contract they can trade for another star.
I'm really getting sick of every idea involving getting another star being deemed fantasy talk. I'd say we have as good a shot as anyone. All we need is for someone to want to come here and we can make it work.

Because they could dump a longer term contract and clear cap space for a run at FA.

If Jordan and Bobcats management had half a brain they would offer us Okafor and Wallace in the offseason for Ray Allen. Ray is 33 after this year and still looks effective but for these two players i don't know if we can say NO. Okafor is a huge upgrade over Perk as he can avg 14 and 12 a night as well as being a better shotblocker. He is overpaid, injury prone, and has a longterm contract but he is also still very young. Gerald Wallace would excel here as a #3 or 4 option on offense. He is an elite defender at the wing who could cover the Kobes and Lebrons of the world. He is also still very young. He is overpaid at about 9 to 10 mil a year for 4 more years after this one but I don't think the investment is that bad if we were winning titles. The reason this idea isn't bad for Charlotte is because they have no cap space for a FA run in 2010 or 2011. Jordan should be thinking now of blowing this team up. They are going nowhere. They need to dump May and Morrison. They also now have a logjam at Pg with Felton and Augustine and they need to move one of those guys. With this trade they would only have about 30 mil committed to guys in 2010 and Richardson and Muhammed expire after thta clearing another 20 mil. This would be a great move for Char. Who wouldn't want to play for Larry Brown and MJ who def would have some cache when going after free agents.
