Why Keyshawn was released -

Post#1 » by deep throat » Fri May 4, 2007 9:42 pm

This really didn't make sense to me, it's not like they are loaded at WR. They have a worse situation then us so I did some checking and here is what I found out; Here's why Keyshawn Johnson is gone:

Although the receiver, who was followed by controversy in his previous stops, seemed to be a model citizen in his one season with the Panthers, there were some-behind the scenes issues.

Some very important people in the organization weren't happy when Johnson failed to stand up and take blame away from quarterback Jake Delhomme after some critical passes intended for Johnson were intercepted. At least one very important person in the organization urged Johnson to do that and he didn't.

Johnson also didn't endear himself to some key people by questioning some coaching moves. The Panthers are on the hook for $3.75 million in salary cap space because of remaining signing bonus prorations. They may designate Johnson as a June 1 cut and spread the cap hit over two years.

The decision to part ways with Johnson actually was made at least several weeks ago. When a rumor was circulating about this move last week, Panthers general manager Marty Hurney told The Observer that information was "not accurate.''

Apparently, the Panthers wanted to make sure their bases were covered before officially making the move, and the clincher came when they drafted USC's Dwayne Jarrett in the second round Saturday.

I think I'd rather just stay status quo. He's just going to take a roster spot and playing time from one of these young guys. Ted obviously feels the team is still in rebuilding so why (Please Use More Appropriate Word) the development or waive one of our young guys who could develop. Might as well see what these guys can do. If it happens, Yawn, but it appears that he still is a risk on some level. If Ted does make a move it will be one of these ok well I better get him (Favre) something and maybe it will quiet the fans.

How about an actual article with quotes from the GM himself:

Why did the Panthers get rid of Keyshawn?

Hurney told us, "Keyshawn was great. He was everything we hoped he would be when we signed him. But we just thought at the time to make that decision and give the younger guys time to develop. What happened over the weekend, we were fortunate enough to get Dwayne Jarrett and we also got a receiver from Miami of Ohio named Ryne Robinson who is a returner and caught 91 balls at Miami of Ohio last year. You add them with young receivers in Drew Carter and Keary Colbert and Taye Biddle to go along with Steve Smith. We felt like we have a group of young receivers who we feel can develop and help us a lot with time and reps."

"No Adam, I mean, shoot, 70 balls is a lot of balls in this league. He's a physical receiver. He blocked for us on the run. He did everything we thought he would. I don't think we ever could have predicted we could have gotten a receiver like Jarrett at 45 and then we got Ryne Robinson and we do have young guys. That was really the reason."

Because he didn't stand up and take blame seems lame.
